Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Vivian Campbell Licks From 1989. I've had a lot of requests to feature more from Vivian, and while I did feature him along with Adrian Vandenburg (from their Whitesnake days) in a Three-For-All episode around two years ago, not to mention the Dio Chordplay episode also from 2019, I decided after noticing more requests coming in for him that it was time to feature him in another lesson - so here we go!
This lesson takes a look at a handful of ideas that came from a "Vivian Campbell & Friends" appearance at GIT in 1989, which was post-Whitesnake but pre-Def Leppard, and that transitional period when Vivan formed Riverdogs and a few other projects. His playing was fiery and as aggressive as ever during this period, as this lesson reveals.
The ideas shared here include plenty of pivot arpeggio ideas, which I penned a lesson for Guitar Player back in the Holiday 2017 issue surrounding pivot arpeggios, a common sound heard coming from players such as Nuno Bettencourt and Steve Vai, not to mention Gary Moore - who a was massive influence on Vivian. There's also a sinister double-picked intervallic idea that will keep you up at night and your picking hand in shape, and much more!
Dive into this lesson, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

My favorite era of VC. I saw Def Leppard in Hartford when they played in the round on the Adrenalize tour. I was third row and he was playing his Andersons (my favorite guitars). He played his own solo in Love Bites and it was OUTSTANDING!! All the Gary Moore influence came out! It was just one of those lightning in a bottle moments. I wish it existed on video. Just unbelievable. I'm so glad he got the gig with Def Leppard because it finally seemed to be a good situation for him where he was both appreciated and respected the way he deserved to be. Thank for this three for all.

Best Vivian playing I’ve ever heard was from Dio Special at the Spectrum live video from Last in Line Tour. Vivian was on fire the entire show, but the solo and extended version of Heaven and Hell are outrageous. That’s what made me pick up the guitar. I had a friend with some tech burn the vhs to an audio cassette, didn’t sound great but i wore it out. No KZfaq or much digital in the mid 80s, you found a way. Do yourselves a favor and check it out !

Great video!! Vivian's just so good and he's a great singer to. His playing over slower tempos is often overlooked. There's his solo during Love Bites with Def Leppard from 1993 Live at Sheffield. Just so cool. The solo that I first knew him for was his version of Give Me All Your Love with Whitesnake, which came out on the video for the track. It's less shreddy than Sykes and IMHO fits the song a bit better.

When I was 14, me and a bunch of school mates meet Vivian Campbell at his father's holiday home in Donegal, Ireland. One of the guys said that a rock star was staying in town, we all skipped school and headed down and looked in the window and seen him playing the guitar - to this day we disagree about the song he was playing, but we all think it was for the "Last in line" album

That album with Lou Gramm - the Shadowkings has really lots of tasty lead guitar playing and you can see how VC has matured and transitioned into a true sideman with Def Leppard. Oh and his solo on Def Leppard's Paper Sun :) Loved his super fluid lines and runs which are not run of the mill shredder licks and this distinguishes him from the rest.

Which like Eruption I've never been able to play properly. I remember he did an instructional video. And he played in B position and on a BC Rich with no fret markers. So needless to say I spent a lot of time rewinding haha. It wasn't that funny at the time. HA! Thanks for the awesome lesson and tip of the hat to Viv!

It would help me as a guitar player if you also explain the picking hand movements, even if only once during the lick demo. The other day I slowed down your Warren DeMartini lesson to see your picking hand motion and it improved the fluidity of me playing the lick alot. Keep up the great work!! I saw Def Leppard in concert the last 2 years (before COVID). Viv was smiling the whole time and looked like a kid in a free candy store. His playing was amazing. He and Phil switch off lead and rhythm constantly during the show. With Def Leppard songs there are always plenty of intertwined guitar playing going on. If Viv is unhappy or doesn’t get to play the stuff he wants to you’d never know it by watching him.
