Hello, great how to! I noticed at least one mention of someone saying Not to use a straight stitch foot, but a zigzag foot for the twin needle, so as a professional I wanted to comment for clarification of what I am sure they meant. The foot that is the "default" foot and the one that is being used in the video is technically called a Zigzag foot. Because it's the foot that almost everyone uses for all stitching, many people call it a straight stitch foot. A true straight stitch foot is pretty much a solid plate with one small hole in the center, You can Only do a center aligned straight stitch with it or your needle will hit the foot and break. No one really uses it...

Andrew! This is spot on! I really appreciate your feedback. As I've mentioned in my my previous videos, I'm not a professional seamstress. I just share the tips and methods that have worked for me, in hopes that I can bring clarity to others who are just starting out and/or are confused. So, a professional's feedback is definitely welcomed and appreciated here. Thanks for stopping by, Andrew. xoxo, Shania

You're welcome, Shania! I'm so happy that you're excited to share (and very effectively, too!) what you've learned through your experiences and even more excited to know that there will be SO many more "eureka" moments to come for every project that you do!. I have been sewing for two decades now and Still regularly discover new tricks to make creating garments more quickly and effectively, lol.

You're wonderful, Andrew! I think you're right about discovering more "eureka!" moments, though it's unfortunate that sometimes there's a lot of back tracking before reaching those light bulb moments. Anyhow, you live and you learn through trial and error. Thanks again for stopping by, and gracing us with your knowledge. xoxo, Shania

I also wanted to mention that I’ve been really successfull with a straight stitch when using a walking foot. So it’s not really impossible but you just need the right kind of setup

Wow. Really. Really helpful. Been at this for hours. Trying to impress an elderly stepmom. 🤭🤭🤭. On a Singer still yet older model I used same thread tension and ... what u said 🤭. Dnt forgot the proper term. Haha. It worked great. But even I used the zigzag stitches came out straight. 🤯☺. But I'm just glad I did it. Allahumdulillah. Im a once in a blue moon sewer I'm suppose to sew more. Have a few unfinished projects. But after this I'm kinda renewed in faith that I can do this haha. 🤗🤗🤗. Thank u. Very helpful. And TO ALL U SCROLLING THE COMMENTS. IT WORKS. HER METHOD WORKS.

Your explanations and demonstrations are the best I have seen. Your voice has a such pleasant quality. Christine’s comment regarding the background music is similar to mine. The music was louder than your voice and quite repetitive, making it difficult for someone with ADHD to focus. I understand if you do not wish to change how you use music with your presentation. I’ll WILL still watch (without sound) because your demonstrations are awesome. Please do not take this as a criticism; you are amazing!

My 15yo granddaughter just brought me a dress to hem and it's stretchy material....as soon as I pinned it to length I grabbed my computer and searched youtube! thank goodness you were here. You just taught an old dog some new tricks. Really good tutorial but the music could have been turned down a bit as it did drown out your voice at times and maybe touch up the nails a bit, but you are a good teacher! Thanks for taking the time and giving some options. I didn't know about twin needles. Can't wait till tomorrow so I can go buy that little gem.

Hi Shania. Muchísimas gracias!! It's lockdown here, I wanted to shorten my new t-hirts which I would normally take to an alterations store because I have never had success in seeing stretchy fabric .. until I found your tutorial! Your instructions are so clear and specific, I love that you not only gave the tension and stitch width measurements but also that your video clearly showed where those dials are located on your sewing machine, which is very similar to mine. You are a terrific teacher with a beautiful speaking voice for online tutorials. You explained and showed all the steps in such a clear calm way that it gave me the confidence to attempt to hem those t-shirts myself. I used your zig-zag stitch method. Success! No wavy hem! Next I'm going to attempt the twin needle method on one of my finer weight tops.

hmmm okay, first some questions: when you make pants/shorts are you making them from scratch (or are you tracing a from already made pants/shorts? does problem occur when you're working with stretchy fabric or non-stretch fabric?

If you are tracing regular non-stretchy denim jeans onto stretchy fabric, you'll have make the pattern smaller to compensate for the stretch. If you're trying to make stretchy pants/shorts, your best bet would be to trace a pair of leggings. I hope that helps. :)

I would use the wonder tape or some other wash-away stabilizer between the hem and garment underside when using the twin needle to lessen the tunneling effect, especially on the knit fabric that was chosen for this demo.

In your video the sample you're sewing, is right sound down, yet you show the finished sample just the opposite. Because you dont know how many novice sewers are watching, you need to let them know when hemming with a double needle the fabric is right side up. A tip... practic on a scrap, right side down, to judge where you want the needles to fall. Mark the edge of the needle plate with painters tape, where your fabric ends. Now when you hem your project, right side up, you can follow the tape.
@ShaniaShania

Thanks Geraldine! I did not mention this point about the fabric facing right side up in the video, but I DID answer this question to a viewer who made the same observation as you, and I notified her that the fabric is right side up so that the double row of stitches is visible. Thanks for the tip about the painter's tape. xoxo, Shania

I have used painters tape, or what we call masking tape here in South Africa to make a mark where i want the material to slide next to. That is such a useful and easy way to make marks. The other option i use is to use a marking pen, (i suppose you call it a sharpie) to mark the position on the needle plate, and when i am done, i use Methylated Spirits to clean off the mark when i am done.
@patrickfarley8036
@patrickfarley8036 4 жыл бұрын
@@101boertjie if you are looking to remove permanent marker ink from something other than fabric like the metal plate on your machine, you can go over the mark you made with the same marker a few times quickly and just wipe away. The ink reactivates the dried ink and allows it to be removed. You do need to act quickly and wipe before it dries again.

Does stretchy fabric tend to be knit rather than woven?
@Dollectable_Dreams
@Dollectable_Dreams 5 жыл бұрын
@@serdnaasonipse1511 Yes! Exactly!! Jersey, for example, a stretchy fabric, is a type of knit that needs a ball pointed needle. Cotton, on the other side, is a type of woven that doesn't usually stretch and doesn't require the ball pointed needle. Also, you would want to sew stretchy, knits fabrics with polyester thread which allows for a bit of a stretch, while cotton thread does not.

Hey D She! I'm sorry for the confusion. Someone else had mentioned the same thing. This was a video editing error. If you want the double row of stitches to be on the right side, you have to sew the garment so that the right side is facing up. Otherwise, if you sew with the wrong side facing up, you'll have a zig zag stitch on the right side of the garment, and the 2 rows of stitches will be on the wrong side of the garment. Hope this helps. Is there anything in particular that you'd like me to do my next tutorial on? xoxo -Shania

If that wonder tape is wash away wouldn’t you have to stitch it so the hem doesn’t come apart in the wash? Sorry I’m trying to learn how to make garments and definitely have a lot to learn. I’m a quilter but have always wanted to learn how to make clothing it’s just really intimidating to me. I just need to go for it and practice. Thanks for the tips and I hope to learn more from you. Next time can you maybe to a tutorial without the background music it was a little distracting. I would love to see basic garment tutorials like everyday type clothing and lounge clothes 😊
@ShaniaShania
@ShaniaShania 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacky! Thanks for stopping by 😁 You're right about the tape, it is wash away, so the best bet is to stitch as well. However, if for any reason you aren't able to stitch, say for example: you're in a bind and need a quick fix, then the wonder tape (without stitching) is a quick remedy. On the other hand, if you're not facing wardrobe malfunction and you're able to sew, then stitching over the tape is the best thing to do. As for your sewing intimidation, don't let it get the best of you. The world would love to see the wonderful creations you're capable of producing, don't cheat us of your creativity because of intimidation. I never went to school for sewing, everything I've learned thus far has been through trial and error. If I can do it, *you definitely can too*. Not to mention, you've already got somewhat of a head start as a quilter, am I right? p.s. Thanks for the content suggestions, and I'll try to lower the background music in my upcoming videos. Have you subscribed to my channel, and turned on your notifications as well? 😁😁 With love, Shania
