My yips were so bad, especially in tournament rounds, that I was ready to quit golf. I heard about left hand low chipping and, since I already putt that way, I gave it a try. A couple of practice chips and it was instant improvement with consistent contact and, most importantly, it's been holding up under pressure. Now I'm able to focus on my target instead of wondering where the chip was going (or not going). I made the switch a couple months ago and from inside 50 yards I won't even think about going back to conventional. I don't care what it looks like, it's actually fun to be a good chipper again and to do it unconventionally.

I’ve had a similar experience and find the left hand low grip produces some soft shots. The struggle is real!

I can totally relate to that 😔 Nothing is more discouraging than just missing a green in regulation and walking off with double bogey or worse. 😡 I've been battling chipping/pitching and putting yips for a dozen years. Every year I think this will be the year I conquer it. I've watched more videos than I can count. Makes me want to quit the game sometimes. 😔

Need more transparent videos like this. Piers, it helps to know even professionals struggle with something that should be so simple. I consider myself a terrific ball striker, but get me inside of 60 yards and I’m a hot mess. I need more videos on short game like this. Not “how to be a robot”, but personal relatable golf struggles. Thanks guys!

Piers, I agree with pretty much agree with all you've said, but also with the addition of establishing extremely light grip pressure at address and maintaining it throughout the swing. I also try to blend the motion of the arms and the torso so they both swing and rotate/pivot at the same speed. To view this "blending" of arms and torso, I would recommend watching videos of Luke Donald, Justin Rose, and Tiger Woods... Cheers 😃

Thanks for having the COURAGE to post this. Really appreciate your efforts to help! I've struggled with this same issue for many years and I continue to struggle with this aspect of the game. I agree with what starts out as a fundamental execution error can turn into a mental obstacle. I'm a highly coordinated individual and has baffled me why this has been so difficult to fix. I personally really liked the piece you did with Stan Utley a while ago, and I can see how you've incorporated some of that here. I have tried to use that too. As with so much in golf, there is no one "right way" to do something as artistic as the chip/pitch shot. It's important to embrace the process of discovery, and try to enjoy the journey. Wishing you well as you stay curious in trying to improve!!!!

Thank You! -It is nice to know that we amateurs aren't the only ones who struggle with the game. Yips are brutal and yes, yes, yes Piers demonstrated the thinking that goes into the negative result which is compounded by tension and worsens the problem (Duffing or Smashing it in the forehead!). This is more mental than technique. Simply (ha!) going back to fundamentals with a pre-shot routine and a positive mental attitude and hitting the shot with confidence will give a better result. Keeping the feet closer together and being deliberate, shortening the swing and grip pressure keeps the swing within your center which limits the club face to bottom out at the right place. I recommend to anyone -good or bad, to suck up the pride and take a few lessons; Lessons and coaching have improved my game, but more importantly made it fun again. What I love about your teaching method is keeping it simple and that you guys are real! Keep it up -Love your work.

The chipping yips caused me to quit golf for 9 years. I had such a good short game when I was young. But it got so bad that if I barely missed a green I brought triple bogey plus into play. I went from a 3 to a 13 because it began to destroy my confidence and make me not like playing or practicing. I just started playing again. I still have the yips, but videos like these are hopefully gonna help me be able to enjoy golf again.

My story is very similar. Just started playing again and am going to try a three-pronged approach to managing the yips: Headspace app, alternative approaches(use hybrid around green, left-hand low chipping, daily drills). Thinking about documenting my progress.

Your honesty in describing having dealt with serious yips as a pro is commendable and quite helpful. The discussion made me realize that as a higher handicap golfer, there’s no reason to feel shame and embarrassment when even very skilled golfers can experience essentially the same thing as what I’ve gone through. After watching your video I can approach my short game with a different attitude, and the belief that there’s likely technical issues compounded by anxiety rather than it being all in the head! Thank you!

chipping and delicate shots around the green are a nightmare for me right now. My full swing and ball striking is probably on par with tour level golfers, and my chipping has always been decent. But around 3 years ago, my body just seems to freeze up halfway through the shot whenever i chip, and i focus so hard on just making good contact but unable to. The funny thing is, i have no problem chipping, hitting flop shots when I'm just on the practice green and not playing. Honestly, ptsd with chipping has caused confidence issues outside of golf as well and hopefully no one else has to deal with such a terrible experience.

Thanks guys. Truly appreciate the effort in making videos with practical and useful content. In my case when this happens is mostly due to an unconscious deceleration of the downswing. So what’s worked most is focusing in making sure to fully drive the speed through the ball at impact in a club angle similar to the first technique described here.

Finally, someone who actually addresses the problem of the yips. Great video around understanding the bounce and not advocating the shaft lean methodology. Have been battling with the chipping yips for a while now and ended up chipping with left hand low to get the jittery right hand out of the shot. Sliding the club under the ball rather than trying to clip it precisely. Thanks again - great video!

How refreshing to hear that excellent players such as yourself and others in the comments struggle like us amateurs , I’ve struggled for years with yipping chips (I’m single figures) and it can bring you to tears , it’s so embarrassing you don’t try to fix it but you avoid the shot entirely (ie using woods to chip or putting from yards off the green ) because you convince yourself it’s lack of mental strength or bottle. Thanks for breaking this problem down to technique which I shall now work on , and thank you for being honest about your own weaknesses Piers , I’m more inclined to follow instruction from someone who empathises with how golfers struggle than from a teacher who thinks golf is easy.

Have to say this has revolutionised my short game. Was on the verge of giving up as chipping was so bad over last few years it was destroying any enjoyment I was getting from the game. 2 rounds using this new approach and a couple of hours practising my confidence started coming back and. I am now no longer simply worried about getting the ball somewhere on the green but can focus on getting it near the hole. I really wish I’d been told how to do this 15 years ago! Thanks guys x much in your debt.

I love this video. Piers exactly explained the results--and the frustration! I may be the worlds foremost expert on chipping yips, having suffered them for 48 years! At age 21, I was a great chipper, didn't even think about technique. Put my clubs away for the winter in 1971 (South Dakota), came out the next spring, and it was gone. I've tried literally everything since. Was a 2 handicap, now 6 index, so my long game is good. My basic problem, clearly shown from videos, is dipping and scooping. What has worked somewhat: (1) one-handed chipping. Either hand. No problem, no yips. It's putting the hands together that induces the dip. Pride and stubbornness keeps me from just adopting this permanently. (2) left-hand low. Works great with chip and run. However, I still can hit it fat--not a perfect solution. (3) This one is weird. If I look at the hole (like Jordan Spieth putting), I hit the nicest, crisp chips and pitches. Fun to see the ball launch out of the corner of me eye. It takes the "hit" out of the shot. WHAT DOESN'T WORK. (1) Keep the hands ahead. This is the textbook advice. Shaft lean. We know what that causes for folks with chipping yips. (2) Dave Pelz. Have committed to his method three separate times. Too hard to coordinate body turn, and he never addresses the cause of the scooping, except to say the cause is playing the ball forward. Hell, I can scoop a fat shot when the ball is a foot behind me. (3) Stand Utley, Tom Sieckmann. Feels great when clubhead passes hands and ball pops up without divot. But it is so hard to break habit of pulling club through with left hand. I took five lessons from one of the leading short game teachers of professionals, and he basically taught this method. God bless him, but I wasted $750. What I like about this video is that Piers basically says, "you've got to figure it out yourself. Find something that works." I DO like his idea of pulling up with the left side. I've had some success with that on the range--discovered it by accident. Again, great video if for nothing more than knowing there are very good players out there who suffer like I do. Maybe we should start a support group. "My name is John Doe, and today it took me five to get down from 40 yards."

@mdl8399
@mdl8399 3 жыл бұрын
Stuart, I’ve tried similar remedies. Instead of $750 on a lesson I’ve spent the money on tools, gadgets, and books-to no avail. I would like to add two strategies in which I have found some success: 1). When practicing, placing a wooden dowel in the hole in your grip. When chipping, don’t let dowel hit your rib cage. I then take this “feeling” to the course. 2). When playing, use the club with the least amount of loft that will get the job done. I use a hybrid wood from near and around the green.
@stuartdorsey1362
@stuartdorsey1362 3 жыл бұрын
@@mdl8399 Thanks for these ideas. I've tried the dowel in the grip--doesn't work for me, as my problem isn't so much breaking down the left hand, as it is dipping the right shoulder then pushing the hands. I know: ugly. But your second idea is really working for me. I use a 5-9 iron, go cross-handed, and then use a shoulders putting stroke. Saved a lot of shots around the green; unfortunately, doesn't work past 30 yards.

Thanks for sharing this! I went to the putter stroke too to get rid of my chipping yips. I do have a little shaft lean and have been shifting my weight on my left leg. I also have been working on getting the feeling of brushing the surface and depending on the lie, I may have to choke down. I determine this on a couple of practice swings. I use the length of my backswing to control the distance. Since I've made this change for myself, my chips and pitches have been so much more consistent and I can control the distance better.

Your best video EVER, at least for me. I’ve had this problem my whole life. I hit my irons and woods decent but my short game is horrific. I watch lots of these instructions but I get tired of hearing the same things from people I don’t believe have really ever suffered similar problems. This is the most human I’ve seen your videos where I feel I can relate to you and you to me. I really appreciate the openness especially from a player of your caliber. I would have never imagined you missing a chip shot completely, would not have even dreamed it was possible. Keep the human side coming and I think you’ll get more subscribers. Truthfully I’ve only watched about 40-50 of your videos and kind of went away maybe because I didn’t feel you could relate to my game. This was great for me.

Great video for technique but I'm convinced that the chipping (and putting) yips are actually a mental tick that manifests itself in loss of proper technique, rather than the other way around. My chipping and pitching is actually pretty great on the practice green, but I struggle to take it to the course because the consequences only exist on the course, to the point that I attribute the slight improvement in my chipping yips this season to trying to get myself into the same mindset I have when I'm on the chipping green (i.e. I'm focusing on what type of shot I need to hit/where I want the ball to land, etc.) To me, curing the yips is about the mental approach you take to the shot you need to hit as a whole, rather than narrowing the scope of your focus to technique. -- The example I always use to illustrate this difference is the fact that I am comfortable hitting a flop shot from anywhere around the green so long as the lie is conducive to it, and the reason I am successful is I am not thinking at all about technique, only on how hard I have to swing and where I need to land the ball--so if I miss the green and have a "flop shot" lie, it's better than 50/50 I will get up and down, but if it's not, (the ball is sitting too far down or is on a soft but tight lie) then the mental demons creep in.
@croplaya
@croplaya 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely.. when i dont give a shit I chip 10x better.. like everyone else. I would go so far to say its 75% mental. I found when I take one practice swing and then GO it works out better. Even if you dont like your take back just go with it, keep it smooth and BELIEVE in the shot

I saw that vid you did by that race track and saw Crossfield struggling with his chipping. Yet, you both took the focus to using the bounce more, while I also was trending to a steep attack angle. I went to the local course's chipping green and worked on different shots for two hours. It gave me a great foundation and confidence again, using the bounce more. Tremendous help. Now, if I can get my long game back in shape, I will be off to the races.

Thanks so much. I've struggled with my game around the green for the past few years but never get a chance to practice what with family commitments, just turn up and play and hope that it got better. It didn't, but after watching this vid and putting the tips into practice, it really has changed my game. After only 3 or 4 shots that turned out pretty well, I feel confident standing over a shot with a wedge that I would previously tried to hit with a putter or a hybrid. Of course there are the occasional ones that don't work out perfectly, but that's no different than every other club in the bag. Thanks boys, really appreciate it!

I'm a PGA pro myself and short game was always my strong point, to the extent I'd feel confident taking on any level of player (including touring professionals) and much like Piers I got the yips totally out of the blue! I was just practicing at my home club one day, nothing out the ordinary, went to the short game area and bladed the first one. Thought nothing of it just a one off, then bladed 2 more, then duffed the next few and just got in a right state. After that just making contact was difficult, I was using 7 irons, hybrids, putter etc off the green just to make contact and just keeping it on the green was a relief. I used some similar shots to Piers (the putting chip in particular) which made my chipping a little one dimensional but at least I had something to work with. I also sought some help from my head Pro at the time. He basically told me I always had a dodgy technique but because I was so sound and confident he saw no reason to change anything. But he pointed out that I played with loads of shaft lead and cut across the ball a lot, so he had me feeling like I was hooking chips. This shallowed my angle of approach and enabled me to use the bounce much more efficiently. My short game still isn't as sharp as I would like and still struggle with confidence but Im not hitting any disaster shots anymore at least. Thanks for a great video guys, left me with some things to consider and a bit comforting to see fellow professionals also feeling the struggles I've had!

I am a 4 handicap but for years I have chipped and pitched like a 20 handicapper. I have taken lessons and watched pretty much every short game video on KZfaq. Nothing worked until a friend of mine told me to stand as straight up as I can with my setup. I went so far as to now stand with my legs actually locked on every shot now inside of 70 years except for flop shots. The results have been like a miracle. What this has done has enabled me to always maintain my spine angle and it's pretty much totally eliminated both thin and fat shots. I was never very good hitting my 60 degree out of the fairway but now I can go for par 5's in two and not feel like I am going to end up 40 yards from the green and end up making double. I have only been doing this for about three weeks and my worst score since has been 80, and this included 8 rounds of golf on the difficult desert courses in Scottsdale and Vegas (Troon, We Ko Pa, Wickenburg Ranch, the Rim in Payson and the Pauite courses). If you are struggling I think you should give this a shot.

I'm gaining on "every short game video". I'm surprised that your comment seems to have been ignored - though I suppose I probably delve deeper into these comment sections than most. Quit golf 25 years ago with a 5 over this stuff. The spine angle theory is interesting. I wonder about the locked knees and some of the "knee flinches" that we see with chips and pitches. 70 years old now and needing to give golf another go, as tournament tennis is no longer an option. First visit back to a practice green yesterday after all my new KZfaq knowledge had mixed results, but some hope remains. Video, as usual, exposed some issues that I hadn't "felt". Would love to hear more about your journey.

I've had the yips for 15+ years and been to some top pro's as well as reading every book there is on the yips + 1000's of hours trying. I am left handed but play golf right handed having reached the point with the yips where I was going to chip left handed. and may still. Left handed was 1000% better but left me with a yardage problem on where to switch chip/pitch). I found this tip and the difference was immediate in my brain at least :), providing me with a simple key to trust ( low chips, feeling like i am straightening my left leg and coming up) . It immediately eliminated half the fear - chunks. I am not saying I am cured and probably never will be but hats off for the the courage to share this and help others like myself. Great video. I've been hitting the ball pretty well but struggling from 20 yards in. Play links golf with very tight lies and very fast greens. I've tried chipping not looking at the ball but looking out beyond it so I'm not hitting at the ball. Chipping one handed trying with left hand and right hand. Has become really bad and I've put a lot of practice in at this. Use putter a lot but now struggling with contact on this, topping it. Have tried weight on front foot but actually find some of my best chips have come with weight slightly on back foot, seem to be able to brush ground better then.Have tried cack handed but loose all tempo and blade it. Find tempo is hardest thing for me as nearly rushing downswing to get shot over and done with. So will try the two techniques abouve. Fingers crossed.

I have a similar story to Piers. Was a great chipper in my teenage years, then hit an approach thin through a green after a great drive. Confidence slowly disappeared and I've had the yips for ~4 years. Recently switched to limited wrist hinge and hitting before the ball - it's starting to help and ensures I hit through the ball. If the lie is bad, I go with toe-down wedge with a putting stroke.

Having gone through this myself on my return to golf after 10+ years off, I would like to offer a version of 'The Putting Technique' that I think works even better - and that is to fully lengthen the arms (you will end up at the very bottom of the grip) and this is the key part, stand the putter shaft COMPLETELY vertical and chip with the bottom corner of the club. This is a Greg Norman technique I saw on TV 20+ years ago that he used if the ball was sitting down is a slight depression. This technique is absolutely bullet proof in not chucking or blading any putt ever again because no one chunks or blades a putt - and by turning your wedge (52-54 works best) into a vertical shafted like putter, ground interaction, with straight arms, is immediately solved. You might think that chipping with the bottom corner of the club is challenging - it absolutely is not - and it works amazingly well. With this technique, I stand open to the target with feet close together. This technique saved me mentally and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone suffering a case of the chunks & blades. My normal higher carrying chipping motion, with my confidence growing again, is a modified less extreme vertical shaft version of this where I use my 57degree & 11 bounce wedge - still choking up on the shaft - but again using more or the corner of the wedge and like Piers, using a shaft that is not handle forward and digging but trying to make sure I skimming the grass with the bounce.
@caribber1
@caribber1 3 жыл бұрын
Paul do you maintain Y, or rock shoulders with this putt chip technique? Also, are you talking about putting with the toe when you say corner of the club?
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil 3 жыл бұрын
@@caribber1 11 months later, and having another 60+ Covid chipping / pitching sessions, I get to comment again. When you get closer to the ball, the shaft becomes more vertical. You then let your arms hang from your shoulder sockets - this then leads the club to naturally lift the heel off the ground and it puts the toe of the club (only) in contact with the ground. If only the toe is in contact with the ground, this naturally should point you to trying to chip with this part of the club - so YES, the toe of your wedge becomes the part of the wedge that you are making contact with the ball - because that is the part of the club that is closest to the ground. In terms of maintaining a Y, the way I would describe it is, you take the club back in one-piece, but then you let your right wrist 'extend' a little (like when throwing a ball), and then this additional extension energy is then put back into the ball at impact in a natural and fluid way, the Y is maintained, BUT, your wrists (added extension and then release), are providing a natural, fluid motion, hit on the ball.

The biggest issue for me is conditions. Only about 10% of public courses in my area have conditions as good a what is in the videos. Too many have hard pan, dead spots or simply grass so thin you can't do anything around the greens. Videos on how to deal with that would be very helpful.

I agree with previous comments that the mental side of chipping is key (once basic technique is there). My trick: keep telling yourself that chipping is your key strength and any chip inside 50 yards is a given up and down. Of course this is not really the case, but just telling myself this helps so much - and I have had a couple of rounds this year with 5+ chips from 30+ yards out, that were all stopping within a foot from the hole - so sometimes becomes true. My only other tip: focus on the hole and think like you are throwing a tennis ball with an energetic underhand throw...

Guys this nails exactly what I've been struggling with for the better part of 3-4 years. I was once an excellent chipper and exactly like Piers used to chip with heaps of shaft lean. It's been improving and I do better in practice sessions, its under pressure on the course that the issues are exasperated. Can you provide any other ways to practice while simulating the pressure of a round or match? The Pelz points system is cool, but are there any ways you guys can suggest practicing that might simulate game conditions and get your body used to performing with anxiety? Thanks!

Interesting video and I can 100% relate to what Piers has been going through - I have had the same problems. I have had some success with changing my grip and holding it baseball style. I then concentrate on the right hand doing all the controlling of the club. I also practice just using my right hand. I also have to concentrate on keeping my head still and watching the ball off the club face. I would be interested in your thoughts about what club to use - part of me thinks I should stick to just one and learn to gauge distance control with that (I use 52deg generally), another part thinks I should be using a 7 iron and taking some of the loft off.

Hi to both of you, I've recently started to get back into golf on a more than casual basis and come across your videos which I love, great advice and easy to understand, just a shame the Astbury isn't closer! So here it is, I can hit a 7 wood as straight and true as anything, pitching around 190/200 running through to around 210/220 at my local range (slightly uphill). The same goes for my loft wedge, without the distance of course, and on occasion my pitching wedge. If, however, I use a driver I constantly slice, with the Irons I hit them low and not at all far. Also not accurately and sometimes find myself slicing too. I've tried so many things, the towel trick under your arms, loosening my grip, closing the club face (hence the low shot s) but nothing truly works. Please help! Even my golf pro when taking lessons struggles to pinpoint the problems (money not so well spent). In hope,

I've definitely had rounds where my head gets in the way with chipping, and the symptoms are exactly as you've described. I'm generally a decent chipper (if I do say so myself...) but my "bad" chip is a dig-in duffed fat shot - I do one of those, then the thoughts kick in and the next attempt is a thin that flies off the other side of the green. Once it happens, the rest of the round will be a mixed bag. Generally it is triggered by a "bad" lie, or at least a lie that makes me second guess my chip. Interestingly, I'm a good-ish driver of the ball and it is often after a "cracking" drive down the middle that this chipping thing happens - I think the expectation that you'll convert on a great drive with a second shot close to the hole, and then the disappointment when you don't and have to chip on can create confidence issues for me. When I have rounds where I hit a lot of greens in regulation, on the holes I don't my chipping is fine. Happily I have the brain capacity of a gold fish, so often the next round I have completely forgotten the issue and chip really well! Seriously though, if I can short-circuit it when it first happens by using your tips, that will be awesome. I will definitely give these a try. Thank you.

I started with the putting yips. I remember exactly when it started. I was in our Club Invitational and on hole #1, 545 yard Par 5. I hit my second shot pin high 10 feet away. I was so excited and nervous on the eagle putt...my body couldn't take in and I hit the first put about 4 feet! Holy crap...that was the hardest 6 footer for birdie I ever experienced.. I remember it falling in from the side door under a feeling of incredible relief but I had yips on that one too. These yips transferred to my chipping. I took a 4 handicap to a 12 in 5 weeks. That was 4 years ago, I've have had lessons from 5 pros and still can't get over the yips. I'm a basket case.

Not sure u guys still check this one, because it was 2 yrs ago. But I ran into this issue over the last yr and it completely wrecked my game.... I was in the 90s and felt like I was headed towards the 80s. I follow the Dave Pelz methods too... but I think one of the important things is understanding the difference between a chip and pitch...and the techniques used for the different shots.... and unfortunately I don't think I did for a while. I was using pitch techniques (wrist cock) on chips-- and for a while I could do it, but then all of the sudden it was gone. Truthfully I'm still struggling, but feel as though I've been making some progress. Of course I don't want to think over the ball at each shot, but that's where I'm at currently. The two things that I think help me is making sure I really use the practice swing to get a sensation and feeling of going all the way through the motion of the stroke a few times... the other thing is the use of "practice swing tempo" in the swing... I repeat that to myself and try to stay calm. It has helped me a little bit not to rush the swing.... the other thing I have to be mindful of is my path, and trying to consciously swing along the target line by not going inside on the take away. This video helps because it makes us " everyday golfers" understand that we shouldn't totally lose our confidence, because we know that other people can struggle with this, including pros.

Same problems. Either wedge digging in ground behind ball; maybe catching ball on way through sending it a couple of yards. Next chip, I don't hit the ground at all, hit the ball about half way up with the leading edge, sending the ball scurrying to the other side of the green, or beyond. Useful to see this, but I'm not sure about having the ball almost opposite my right foot; that has never worked for me. I have seen some advice on KZfaq about standing far closer to the ball, holding the club shaft far more steeply, further down; even with the heel of the club off the ground. The ball in centre of stance for this. Mixed results with this; certainly not consistent. But a bit better than before; not confident with it though. I have had various lessons over the years, and the advice for 'correct' pitching technique changes significantly. Helpful video; nice to know I'm not alone in this.

Right there with you. When I was a 20 handicap my chipping was solid. Now my ball striking is great but chipping is unbearable. One thing I've found that helps and this may sound crazy but look at the target (not the ground in front of you) and just swing the club letting the bady do what you think it should to get to the target brushing the ground a few times. Then adress the ball and again stare at the target and make the same swing (don't ever look at the ball when you are swinging). Sadly I get better results this way. You can also literally close your eyes and swing to avoid the yips. Problem is it's harder obviously when you're not looking at the ball so only makes sense for someone with the yips...

Thank you guys I wanted to tell you that I really appreciate your videos. You have really helped my game. And my question about chipping around the green is this, and I think it's the most important one and I've never heard anyone talk about it, when you're close to the green about 15 yards out and the flag is Middle in, and it's into the grain. What I mean is if you chip it towards the green and you land short of the green the grain grabs it and hold that ball up stopping it in its tracks. Now the problem I'm having is so I use a 56 or I'll use a 50-degree wedge to get in the air and land it on the green and stop it, but these clubs are new to my bag so on occasion I'll come up short. I said all that to say this, could you guys please do a video about chipping into the grain and the fix for that. Thank you guys have a great day really appreciate you Joe
