Really good lesson Mark. Modal theory but put into simpler terms is helpful in recognizing what to play. Thank you for sharing.

Excellent lesson, Mark. Super informative for us non theory types! Picking out that F# sounds really good over the D major. Certainly adds something.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. Yeah, just that one little note makes a big difference. It sort of seems like a lot of theory to get to it, but once you "get it" you get it! It comes naturally after a while.

You just answered a big question I had. You do not have to try to play over every chord! Some chords are more important to emphasize than others. I started making my own backing track videos that show the chords as they go by. I get lost EASILY on what chord is going by. I need to go in baby steps. I have to think about what I'm playing. There is no shortcut. You have to know your intervals and some theory! It's doable in small steps. Love the Skynyrd style progressions!
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Looking at the chord progression and thinking about what to play where is helpful. Most rock progressions are really simple and many do not waver at all from a single key. Those that do usually only differ a little. That's a great place to start. Do not start with John Coltrane's Giant Steps!! And take your time playing. Even if you know the theory, your ear still needs to catch up and your fingers need the muscle memory. It really is like doing push-ups though. Once you start thinking about the changes and hearing them, it gets easier. I'm still working at it ... fun for a lifetime.

@@MarkZabel Makes sense! I can tear up the pentatonic all over the neck, but when going for target notes, it can slow me down to a stop, ...to think. That's good however, because I now see how to solo over chords from your lessons. I'm now thinking about the notes on ALL strings. Never had a good reason to do that before. Knowing many chord shapes will not help you solo over chords if you do not even know what it sounds like to go to the root note of the 4, in a simple 1,4,5 for example. That just sounded wrong to me at first. I love the fact that guitar will challenge me for my whole lifetime!

Always enjoy your vids, can you futher explain why if song is in key of C would you play D mixolydian and not D dorian over the D progression, thanks
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Charles. I think I went to some length in the video discussing the difference between D and Dm in the progression.. The D chord doesn't fit into the C major harmonized scale. This was the discussion around F# being in D, but F being in Dm. In the key of C (which is where D Dorian comes from) we have no sharps or flats. So a D (major) chord can't possibly be in the key of C. It's tricky, but the key concept to get is the standard harmony of a major scale. I-maj, ii-min, iii-min, IV-maj, V-maj, vi-min, vii-dim. These harmonies come directly from notes in the scale. Therefore, when you see D-major you cannot be in the C major key any more. D cannot be the ii chord. Dm can, but D cannot be. That's why you need to treat the D chord (not Dm) separately from the other chords, which all fit into the key of C. From the wording of your question I'm trying to be extra-careful to note the D is not Dm. Why not mixolydian and not Ionian or lydian? That's beyond the scope of this video. But over D (major), the most natural thing to play is a major sounding mode, not one of the Minor sounding modes (Dorian, phrygian, or aeolian), which would sound more natural over a Dm chord. One last thing to keep in mind; these are just guidelines. Rules are not written in stone. In part 1 it's clear that ignoring all this theory still gets you to a place where things sounds good.
@Charles_S.
@Charles_S. 4 жыл бұрын
@@MarkZabel Thanks Mark for explaining it further. I'm thinking that the D maj. must be a secondary dom or borrowed chord? because like you said it should be a D min. in the chord melody. There's so many angles to apply all this stuff it makes your head spin lol......
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 4 жыл бұрын
@@Charles_S. You're welcome. I would say keep it simple. If you're improvising over it, it doesn't matter whether the songwriter used a secondary dominant or a borrowed chord or negative harmony ... it's just a D major chord. You can play whatever you want that fits that chord. Anything you want that fits. Now, one reason I picked D mixolydian (same notes as G major) is that the chords around it hint at being in the key of G. (C, G, D, Am ... all in the key of G). So to most people D mixolydian sounds pleasant. But it's not the only choice.
