Recently in Puerto Rico they signed a law that forces dealerships to provide the “out of the door price” if someone asks online or by phone. It is now illegal there to force people to come in to the dealerships to get the “price”. I hope the states do something similar here

Ya, just bought a car from a dealership last week. Pretty much followed each of these before watching the video. I did do some research and heard this advice from others. Just talked about OTD price, was pretty much ready to walk out at any time, and got pre-approval from our bank, and got the interest rate reduced by a little over a point. And basically got more for my trade-in than I paid for the trade-in... so a massive win.

Hopefully you tipped the salesman well, poor guy doesn’t get paid like managers, all that work for people not to tip them is sad. Some waitresses make more than some salesmen that end up giving the car away and giving awesome deals but they don’t get any commission. Just hours like waitresses, yet they don’t get tipped 😢

How refreshing to find out I have been doing things correctly for decades. Except for my trade being a separate transaction. I only use "my car plus how much equals OTD" IT is one transaction. I raise the price of my trade to equal their silly prices. The only number that matters is the difference. I never ask them to lower their price. I raise my price. I tell them what I am doing. It works.

I'm a brand new member of YAA . I'm so happy and grateful to have found you since I've been putting off a new car purchase and need to buy one soon. That said, it's awful that I have to spend so much time and energy to prepare to buy a car as if I'm preparing for battle. The games are a huge turnoff for modern consumers as you beautifully call out in your manifesto. I wish I could rent you for my purchase day! Things really need to change in this industry with sales practices. It actually keeps me from replacing my cars until they're falling apart because I can't stand the games. If it wasn't so difficult and virtually adversarial to purchase a car, I might not actually wait so long. Just aa bar owners didn't realize how many patrons they were losing to allowing cigarette smoking, the car industry isn't realizing how many sales its losing to outmoded hard sales practices. My dad was in the industry working for a major DC area car company with many dealerships and I heard stories about what the salesmen would do to hold buyers hostage and manipulate them that would curl your toes. I look forward to buying a car like a root canal. It would be so much simpler and better for all involved if the industry shifted to fair market pricing like pretty much every other consumer industry and sales staff actually focused on helping buyers.

I’ve been searching for a new car. Your videos have helped me understand ssssoooo much. I was recently told all my research is Wrong and I don’t know what I’m talking about. The salesman told me there is No such thing as “invoice price”. I wanted to negotiate between invoice and MSRP. Nope he continued to treat me like I was stupid so I told him have a nice day and walked out. Oh and his MSRP was the equivalent of the total price. I had to inform him that it was “Sticker” price not MSRP. I literally brought him outside to show him the sticker vs MSRP. So frustrating right now to purchase. 😞

Did all my research based off the window sticker and its 10/10 fully loaded. with only 10k miles on it. When I called the dealer I asked to see a sales order with 3 things on it. Price I told them. Tax /tag and a resonable deeler fee. I got exactly what I wanted. the Total out the door was $7500 less than other vechiles that wasn't as loaded as this one. Thank you YAA.

I have been watching SO many of your videos, so thankful for the information you all have shared. I bought my first car and cosigned with my mom ten years ago. A Volkswagen Jetta, it's been a great car and been reliable. I've been taking my time shopping for something bigger. Our son is 15 months old and the family just doesn't fit. I'm going to look at a new 2023 VW Atlas at the dealership today! It's my dream car, I've wanted it for years, even after tested driving a lot of other SUVs. I know what numbers I'm looking to get the MSRP down to and will NOT be discussing monthly payments first! I'm also approved for two different auto loans I have ready to take with me, as well as a copy of a couple cash values for my trade in. I'm ready to walk if needed. I'm fortunate my Jetta is still fine and I don't NEED to buy a car right now. I'm still nervous though... I was wondering, how do dealerships handle sales differently when a couple comes to look at a car rather than a single person? We've been debating taking the whole family with us, but I get a feeling having my baby with me may make me seem vulnerable in some kind of way.

Hi Courtney, I'm a woman in my forties and did lots of research before I bought my new suv in 2015. I went in by myself, without my husband because he doesn't have a lot of patience when shopping in general. I was worried I would not be taken seriously because I'm a blonde woman. I had already been to another dealership and got an out the door price wich was several thousand lower than when we started and I said I have to sleep on it. I then went to another dealership asking about the same year, make, model suv, same trim line. I told them that I already had another dealership willing to give offer a price of x about of dollars( I had already subtracted $1000 off) for the same suv. Then they, eventually, met my price but then I said that the other dealership was going to throw in remote start and no extra surcharge for the (special color, which was blizzard pearl, worth $500 at that time)). The guy was so frustrated, he said fine. But I wouldn't sign the agreement until he wrote down/added on the remote start and special color. 😏 Then when I went to pick up the suv, ( it was sent from another dealership), it had several upgrades already in it. They said I can take this suv with no extra charge for the upgrades or I would have to wait another week. So, of course I took it. I made out like a bandit! If I may make a suggestion, I would not take a child with you because they are not usually patient and you would probably want to focus on getting a good deal. 😉 The dealerships usually want to talk trade in and monthly payments first so they can better manipulate the numbers in their favor. I first say I dont have a trade in, even if I do. Then I ask for the out the door price as if I'm paying cash. They WILL try to trick you. What happened to me was I was in a car accident and totalled my car, so I had a rental. I DIDN'T TELL THEM THAT THOUGH because they would think I was desperate to get a car. I went to the dealership in my rental care and made up a story of how I already gave my car to my cousin because she needed a car to go to college, her car died on her. I then borrowed my Aunts car because she was in Europe for a month. Lol 😆 I know sounds weird but he seemed to buy the story or just didn't care. Lol Anyways, good luck! 👍; )

All great ideas. I think the key is to go in fully educated, have the facts to back up your proposal, and have some twist that throws them off their game. The best negotiation I ever did was again with all the facts and a monthly amount, number of payments and nothing more than the trade down. I had room in my amount, it was not my final offer but I had a story that capped my limit. "There is no way I can go home and tell my wife I spent more than 400.00 a month." The dealer removed their logo from the back and asked me not to tell anyone about the deal. He also asked me if my wife was a lawyer or CPA. In reality she didn't know about the deal. I was the CPA but it is harder to argue with a CPA who is not in the room.

The tip on getting offers for the trade in completely work. When I got my last two cars I got cash offers from CarMax and a couple other places. I came into the dealer and they said they couldn't do better. I showed them the CarMax offer. On one of the vehicles the dealer matched the offer (which saved me on taxes so I came out ahead). For the other vehicle they actually let me walk, so I sold my car and then when to another dealer w/ cash.

We bought our new cars last year in the spring of 2022. One thing nice about our local Toyota dealer is they are already hooked up through our credit union. So we did get the best financing available at that time by sitting in the finance officers office. I believe we got 2.4% for a three-year note. And the second car was for my daughter on her credit which I helped on. She got a 2.82% for a five year note. So it isn’t always bad to go through the financial officer at the dealership if they’re connected with your local credit unions, and have a good report with them.

I would also add when talking about interest rate. If you know the amount you want to finance, figure out the payments before hand. I did this and had a finance guy come up with the wrong numbers (higher) three times before he got to my number. He would scream your wrong. And I’d say guess again. I have all the costs and I figured it out ahead of time. Then as they back track they would claim oh I didn’t see that number or some other crap. In any case have it all figured out ahead of time. Drives them nuts when you are right and they are wrong. And always easier to do it right before you sign then after you’ve signed. Just go in thinking they are going to try to screw you at every turn.

I went in to the car dealer with my bank’s blank pre approved check with an apr of 2.9%. After all was said and I was ready to fill in the check, my salesperson ask if it was ok if they can try and beat my banks rate. I immediately said “that’s ok”. After some discussions, the salesperson convinced me to let them try and they can back with the same terms but at a 1.9%. I was very surprised because I was always told that car dealers could never beat banks/credit unions rate. Moral of the story: let the dealer try. You may be surprised. This was about 12 years ago.
@scottr2706
@scottr2706 Жыл бұрын
Car dealer F&I managers often can beat your bank and often your credit union. F&I managers offer many auto loan opportunities to banks and captive financing. As a result they can often use the clout which comes from that to work with their bank or captive finance company (e.g.; Honda Financial) to offer a lower rate. Moral of the story is to not believe what you read on the internet. Always verify. A true story. A few years ago I helped my daughter buy a new Honda. She went to her bank which offered 2.5 percent. After negotiating a price, the dealer F&I manager offered a rate of over 4 percent. I then demanded the buy rate and informed her of the 2.5 percent rate from the local bank. The F&I manager immediately came back with a rate of 2.4 percent. The kicker was the 2.4 percent rate was from my daughter's bank. It is never a bad thing to allow the F&I manager a chance to arrange financing, provided you already have financing from your bank or credit union. There is nothing to lose. Just use the financing which works best for you.

@@robertwhite9898 can you list some of those hidden fees?
@scottr2706
@scottr2706 Жыл бұрын
@@robertwhite9898 Firstly, dealers (other than a BHPH used car dealer) do not finance vehicles. Dealers arrange financing with banks. Secondly, there are no financing fees for car buyers with good or better credit. Just as there are no fees with a credit union. The one thing with dealer arranged financing is when the dealer bumps the interest rate, the buy rate. Astute customers know to always demand the dealer use the buy rate (rate actually offered by the bank). Thirdly, it is always wise to let the dealer F&I manager try to arrange financing. As long as the car buyer knows the financing they can get from their bank/credit union there is nothing to lose. Just use the financing which works best.

The manager will show you payments with a slightly pumped up rate so that they can build in back end (warranties) that way when you go into the finance office they will say oh you can stay at the same payment and get this warranty and also gap insurance. Having warranty and staying at the same payment sounds nice huh? That is because you saw payments with a slightly higher rate.

The only times I took the dealer financing in recent years is when there were incentives to do so. Then I turn around and refi at my credit union for a lower rate. Best of both worlds. On my current vehicle, they gave me 3.99%. once I had complete paperwork, I went to me credit union where they offered 1.99%. It took 3 payments off the loan at same payment.

this is incredible, can you please walk me through how to do it? i dont understand how you could “sign” at dealership and then take that paperwork to your credit union? was it considered a “refinance?” or a new loan?

@@PeterPyo Your credit union will take over the loan at new car rates typically for 4 months. Just make 100% sure there is no pre-pay penalty. And talk to the credit union before you get the car.

@@bindingcurve that is great to know! so what i am tracking: get an incentive like a lower price on the vehicle by using their financing. ensure no pre-payment penalty. then, take the loan paperwork to the credit union where they will take on the new car loan and pay off the remaining balance on the car from original loan. win win. correct?
@bindingcurve

@@PeterPyo yes. First talk to your credit union. They are all slightly different and you should make sure that it will work the way you expect. But when I was shopping about a year ago, that was how it was working at Navy Federal.

My God I was doing this all along, and I think it works, before I watched this video. Been to 8 or 9 dealerships in about past 3 weeks and got everyone of them giving me a print out on out the door price. The 1 dealer flipped out on it. But from seeing this video think everyone of the dealers flipped out from it, but they didn't show it like the one. The dealer that flipped out he asks me how many more dealerships am I going to etc...till I buy I something. Told him tell I see the best deal, long story short. Only mistake I made on this so far told some of them paying cash. But no big deal there are many other dealerships I have not been to yet, and will not make this mistake no more.

A local Toyota dealers web site has a link to KBB so you can value your trade then it goes back to their web site to put that value in a worksheet so you figure out the final cost of the vehicle. The problem is the dollar amount they offered for my trade wasn't even close to the KBB value. This is just a come on to get you in the door. Needless to say I walked out the door never to go back.

Great info. I buy with a blank check from my credit union. When I determine the finial price that I agree to, then I write in the purchase price. I also know what cash back the dealer is getting from manufacturer, that is mine. I have also called the manufacturer and get personal sales person. The have the cars I am looking for sent at a set price to my local dealer, best deal.

Here in Britain, the price on the car is the price you (or the finance) pay - - - - it's completely up to you about the finance, either arrange it yourself or use the dealer to arrange it........... Or do what I simply do, just walk in, take a test drive, sit down and think about the price, then just say "oh, that's ok, I don't want finance can I just pay for it now or do you want a bank transfer?" - - - you should see their expression when you say that, especially when buying something in a higher price range.... my current car Mercedes AMG Black Series C63

I negotiated a price for a new hyundai and when they realized I was serious about financing through my credit unioin at half their interest rate, they said they would have to change the sheet, changing the price of the car by about three thousand. They did say there was no pre payment penalty if I were to take the deal and pay it off with my credit union loan. Makes me nervous tho.

Also tell them exactly what you plan to do with the out the door price… right off the bat… which is to walk out the door with it and go to all of the competing dealers and do exactly the same. Zero reason why you shouldn’t shop around… we bloody well shop around for just about everything else we buy right? These dealers are in stiff competition with each other.. not you. Don’t negotiate price… invite bids. Tell them “give me your best offer and if I can’t find anything better, you win”. Make the dealers compete with each other… you are just an information gatherer. If a dealer doesn’t like this and refuses to make you an offer it’s not a problem… tell them it’s ok… after you have gotten offers from others you can come back and give them a chance to beat the best price… which is in fact doing them a favour.

I've seen titles of videos such as "Don't pay cash at a car dealership!" First of all, it's been engrained in me from a young age to pay cash for used cars. You don't want to finance a depreciating assett aka a liability. With that being said, what's the best way to pay for a $20,000 used car? Cash, write a check, or a bank wire transfer?
@Abbecskin
@Abbecskin Жыл бұрын
With point one, we show the customer the dollars and the payment options on the same sheet, the first sheet the customer sees. We use elead. Its transparent and so are we. We write FOR a local credit union and we DON'T add points. With regards to the trade, people who try that trick as the trade as a seperate transaction, THOSE people always get a worse trade amount offer because of the extra work they put us through. When they pull that, we'd almost rather they just sell it themselves. I like you guys for the industry news, but honestly we can spot an 'informed' customer trying to treat is like dirt from the greeting. Those people pay more to treat us like they do. When a customer comes in and is amiable, understands that we are not criminals and sees that we treat them well on their transaction, they get great deals, and they are the ones who say things in our reviews like "best car deal i ever did" "Nik is my only salesperson" etc. Not all of us are put there to screw people and i Don't like you portraying ALL dealers the same. It sickens me to see the crap still pulled by some dealers and heqr the stories yes, but some of us are NOT that way and you should give us some merit for trying to turn the tide of opinion.
@CarEdge
@CarEdge Жыл бұрын
Nik, we praise the good dealers and we prepare the customers for the bad dealers, which I am afraid are the majority of the dealers. I wish we didn't have to but we do. As far as people who are nicer to salespeople (at least in the salesperson's opinion) getting treated better and getting a better deal, well what if everybody paid the same, nice person, friendly person, miserable person it shouldn't matter, everybody gets treated the same and pays the same amount. What if you and a customer just don't mesh, should they not get as good of a deal as someone you hit it off with? I applaud you if as you say, you treat people fairly, openly and honestly and I would encourage you to encourage other salespeople to do the same, it is what retail automotive needs but until that happens, we'll just have to keep preparing consumers for the worst while we hope for the best. All the best, Ray

Getting the OTD price can be like pulling teeth. Getting the vehicle FOR the OTD price once you hit the finance office can also be problematic. Never had a trade-in so I can't speak to that.

As an old car dog 1) I have no problem with giving a customer the OTD. 2) I like when customers are pre-approved because they have realistic expectations of their payment range. There is nothing worse than going through the process and the customer was hoping for a $300 payment on a $38,000 vehicle. 3) I really don't like when people parachute their trade at the last minute. If that happens, I just roll with the punches and tell them to sell it to the highest bidder. It's not rocket science, and should never be combative. CIAO!

I am a customer who does his research, researches what he would pay and what his trade is worth and knows his credit profile. As you note, my experience is car sales people (who are ethical) really do enjoy me as a customer. There is little banter, a deal is usually reached within a hour or less and the sale is made. As you note, buying a car is indeed not rocket science. It is, in the end, essentially math. Anyone with a reasonable amount of researched knowledge and math ability should have no problem getting a good deal. Of course a good deal differs at any given time and for any given vehicle. Today's good deal would likely have been a not so good deal two years ago. Simple math: $38,000 divided by 60 months is $633, not $300.
