Back in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, my in-laws gave us a very old Casio keyboard and I decided to learn to play it. I had not musical training and I had never played before (with the exception of strumming a guitar during as a teenager).
I was 48 years old at the time. For the first few weeks I used the 'simply piano' app. After about a month, I switched to the Adult Piano Adventure method books (1 and 2), and within a couple months I could play simple pieces. Having realized that this was something I really enjoyed, I bought a more modern keyboard (Roland FP30) and decided to start recording my progress and chronicle it on my youtube channel. Here is a short video condensing my progress over 34 months. Including moving to a new house, and buying a real Yamaha upright hybrid piano (NU1X).
Sorry for the poor quality of the video/sound of some clips.
Looking back at my progress, I am surprised by how much I have learned in less than 3 years, simply by practicing 30-60 minutes almost every day. I have a long way to go, and I am under no illusion that I will ever be very good, but I am having a ton of fun, and playing at night when I come back from work is such a relaxing and enjoyable activity.
I hope this short video will convince other 'old' people like myself, with a full job and a family, that it is never too late to start a new hobby, and that learning to play the piano is within our reach!
