I'm a passenger and I have earned lifetime Million Mile status on American. I subscribed to Juan's channel because the content is so unique and interesting. It's meaningful to have an understanding of what airline employees do to make our travel safe and comfortable. Most impressive to me is the skill of the pilots. I'm always sure to thank them while disembarking. Great job and thank you!

After racking up about 12000 hours in the 777 - got a chance to get typed on the 787 and flew it for a short time. 900 hours later and I can honestly say I LOVE it. High , FAST and loaded with cool features in every way. Can't wait for these jets to start showing up on our property at United. Hope Boeing can spool production back up to high levels. UAL is crushing it!

Was gonna ask if it was like flying a space shuttle, but comparing pictures, the new 777 and 787's are probably more advanced than the final glass space shuttle cockpits. :)

Bill Wightman - My wife is now flying the 787 after many years on the 330 which she liked very much. Before that, again many years on the 320. As you might expect the forced transition was met with a major harumph and frown :(. It’s been a year and I now have the suspicion that she likes the 787, though still finds it a bit difficult to admit the fact. Old habits die hard, especially on the home stretch to retirement. It’s a beautiful aircraft, in any case.

Great explanation Juan. I have many thousands of hours in command on the 737 300, 400, and 800, coming from the 747-400, and the 767 before that. I didn’t really have any significant issues at all in transitioning from having an EICAS. Also, if I could have delayed my retirement a few years, I would have had the pleasure of flying the 787. Everyone I know who flies it absolutely LOVES it, fabulous aeroplane.
@pinkdispatcher
@pinkdispatcher Жыл бұрын
My impression was also that I thought differences training might be sufficient, instead of a full-blown new type-rating. But apparently EICAS vs. no EICAS is a huge deal; and I guess it is, in terms of procedures, which matters a lot.
@FutureSystem738
@FutureSystem738 Жыл бұрын
@@pinkdispatcher Yes- on the same type it is indeed a huge deal. It would be close to impossible to have a common type rating I suspect, so without that you then couldn’t fly a 737 with EICAS one day and one without EICAS the next day. Even when we flew the 300/400 and 800, we had to fly both variants and do simulators in both at set time intervals. ie: you needed recency on both. An EICAS would be a very big change.

My son is flying for SkyWest. In my younger years tried to do the military route but with my extensive training and college degree my vision was not perfect. Became an MD instead. Worked 110 hours/week as trauma physician. 30% of my work no pays and unable to tax deduct as charity work. Yearly discussions with health plans for reimbursement adjustments but always on the decline as malpractice and office overhead increased. Typically takes 2-3 months to be paid if not declined first time around. Health plans know doctors will give free care whether paid or not. Extreme burn out, loss of autonomy, etc. Flying is the much better future! Office in the sky interacting with beautiful Mother Nature. Love your channel. Thx

Its great that United is going for more 787s. On another note:- The emphasis always seems to be on pilots and they are the first employees Juan mentions regarding wage hikes for Delta pilots and I am one. Jeepers, all we are is 'bus drivers'. In a conversation, the 'average' person asks you what do you do for a job. You respond, I work for an airline, then their typical response is, 'Oh are you a pilot' -?- ! If the airliners have a technical problem, do you call a pilot-? NO, you call a technician to rectify the problem. So how about more emphasis on the person who fixes the aircraft, the technician who endeavors to keep the 'craft safe so that the it doesnt make a smokin hole in the ground.

I work as a technician for one of the major 3 airlines and the reason nothing gets mentioned about the technician is because Technicians are probably the most stupidest people I have ever seen in my 38 years of working as a technician in the industry and I will tell you why is because unlike the pilots they all stick together unlike these monkey technicians who only care about themselves and sell their souls to management and selling their own brothers and sisters for an extra dollar therefore they will never become a professional people and management and their union know that and take full advantage of that because monkey technicians mentality is all they know I will be glad I’m retiring soon I am so sick and tired of this loser trade group

I agree, but if some employee's figured it out, and we know some did, there should have been some whistleblowing. Whistle Blowers (those that expose a problem), are protected by U.S. law. So, the folks that helped hide the problem by not speaking up bear some of the responsibility for what happened with the M-CAS system.

I have flown the 787 as well, really smooth with the wings as flexible as the are. The only think I didn't like and is a design flaw if you ask me is no window shades. The electronically dimmable windows (EDW) don't get dark enough for those sunset and sunrise flights and the sun is blinding coming in. They should have still had shades. Instead they have stick on covers the Flt. attendants use. Or maybe some smart Flt. attendants have come up with that and it's not from Boeing.

I'm not personally involved in the industry but watched news yesterday that Lufthansa is bringing back several A380s to meet the demand, says they can fill them to make it financially feasible. This story stated that the 380s have been moth balled for 2 years.
@pomerau
@pomerau Жыл бұрын
I read a recent article (mostly forgotten) about how long and how much it costs to put a mothballed 380 back in the air. it was ludicrous. Sorry I didn't search the article before posting ... but something like $5 - 15 million each and 5,000 - 15,000 man hours or 18 months. (I've obviously conflated some of those figures) There was also something about having to replace all the safety chutes as they degrade if the doors are not used, or something (Caution : genius at work ...but not near me!) With so much, maintenance, training, faciltiies, equipment, admin, fuel wastage, advertising, staff location before payroll and asset costs etc., I'm surprised anyone sits on an airline seat for less than $1000. (I'll look for that article, if anyone is still here)

I want to go to Sacramento from Montreal in Feb so I went on line and checked prices. I can do it for $520 return. That’s completely insane. I bet it was more than that 20 yrs ago and fuel prices alone are way higher. Airlines have been squeezing the lemon every way they can since then to keep prices down but it has gone too far. Union busting, outsourcing maintenance, idiotic charges just to sit beside your spouse on a flight - it goes on and on. There is a direct link between the obsession with cost cutting and the Max debacle. Boeing wasn’t trying to avoid a new type rating to please themselves. That decision was customer driven. Now they want to roll back regulatory modernization to keep squeezing the lemon? Enough is enough. Mandating that new aircraft have EICAS is common sense. Everything from the 80s on has it. Time to get out of the 1960s. If the result of that is that I have to pay $600 to get to Sacramento then so be it.

I should add that I recently retired after working for 30 yrs for an airframer as a aero eng and have extensive part 25 certification experience so I am well aware of the Max events, which were unprecedented. I never would have expected that from Boeing. They were always the most conservative company. But then it all went sideways. All of the other mfgs are paying for Boeing’s sins now. Isn’t it always the way.

With these two large purchases, I’m hoping that my Boeing stock goes up to a price higher than I bought it at. 😒

Boeing is still trying to get those 787 fuel tanks inspected for FOD. It is a cramped, strenuous job located in far flung Moses Lake that nobody wants to do. The per diem (actually per month) and hiring bonuses offered for hiring on are simply astronomical. Food, rent, and living expenses are covered on top of hourly pay. I was so tempted to do it I was practically salivating......but I am already beat up, old, and sore, and knew I just would not be up to it. The hiring guy told me that on top of all the loss of revenue for not being able to deliver those planes, AND the PM maintenance, once they have engines attached they are considered a motor vehicle and are required to have valid registrations. So they are paying that cost too. I wish I was still fit enough to do it.

6:40 What do you suppose the box is that is on the glare shield, above the MCP? And what about the orange boots at the base of the control columns? How about that green rocker switch thing and lights on the center of the console?

I still like the B727-200 both adv and older. I got to do the flight release and sit as FE, with the real FE sitting right behind me. I planned M0.84, I was told that is not a good speed for that bird, M0.865. That was a great plane. Last Boeing I worked with was the BBJ, it was a good performer but ran out of engine at M0.82. Boeing is going to make the 73max10 as hard on runways as the 722adv. The MAX10 is going to be a 757-200 with fewer tires and brakes.

Thank you for explaining the MCAS system properly. It was never about any instability or design problems. It was supposed to make the MAX ‘feel’ the same as the previous versions. Unfortunately Boeing completely botched the implementation.
@JimAllen-Persona

It was money. Don’t sugarcoat it. They committed to Southwest that they owed them $1m/day for every day of sim training required for the new model. They removed all references to MCAS in the documentation and dissuaded customers that asked for training. When the two accidents happened, they blamed the foreign pilots. Boeing employees were doing regulatory work for the government to speed things up and pressured by management to downplay the changes. MCAS itself was not the problem but not alerting the pilots how to handle the differences in response because of MCAS was.

No, the MCAS systems was an add-on after test pilots reported that the plane was unstable at slow speed. What does it mean anyway that the plane 'feels' like another plane? Maybe to the test pilots the new pane didn't 'feel'' right because it was unstable and the old one was stable under the same conditions. The root cause was that with the low wing and large diameter engines the engines needed to be moved forward and up relative to original location on the wing to fit. That affected stability. The whole MCAS system was intended to keep the 'nose down' and the plane out of low air speed and instability. That is significant. This is the first time and only place I've heard this 'feel' business explanation.

Great news for the many venders around the world . I am a retired machinist and as they go away from the experimental aluminum many less machinists required . As long as they can keep feeding the pension , I am OK . I have seen the latest 777 with composite wings stacking up massive test hours , any word on how much longer until it may get certified ?
