hello~✸
I noticed a bad habit that started at the beginning of the year when I was feeling really down: impulsive shopping. I was using buying things and take-out delivery to receive dopamine hits and realized it was a problem when it got in the way of things that usually made me happy! So... here's a month of no spending. If you've done this challenge or want to, let me know how it goes in the comments!

One thing that really scratches that shopping itch for me is going to the library! Browsing and walking out with a stack of (free!) books definitely gives me that shopping satisfaction. Sometimes I'll even make an afternoon of it and drive around to different library branches.

was just about to comment this! every time i feel like I need to go buy, I will grab a little drink or snack for like $5, go to the library, and then go to a park and read! Satisfies the urge to drop $$$ on a bunch of books/stuff

I made a wishlist on the notes app with screenshots of things I wanted to buy. At the end of the month I'll allow myself to buy one item from that list. It's funny because looking at the list now, I don't even want most of those items anymore. Before, I would have bought all of them for no reason.

Give yourself a low monthly budget, like $60 per month for spending, and never spend it instantly, save it for later and decide which thing you want most and whether you have the budget that month for it, if not you need to wait until you've got enough from collecting $60 per month, really helps with shopping addictions :) *Edit: I mean having a $60 monthly limit on non-essentials

I love that! I've heard that people will have different accounts to put money in (necessities, savings that you don't touch, etc.) It would be so cool to have an account to put the portion for buying things you want! That is very smart >:)

This challenge also highlighted the lack of free "third locations" that are so integral to socializing. In current society there are hidden costs to seeing friends. Parking, drinks, cover charges...It's hard/practically impossible to hang out without buying something. Even dinner at a friends house has the expectation of a small host gift. Its hard out there!

I did a no buy year a couple of years ago. It was so so very hard. But I did develop the habit of not scrolling through the Amazon website and not spending a small fortune at target and not wasting money at Walmart. I started cleaning and organizing and that was my strategy to lift up my spirits. Now I just clean as one of my favorite things to do when I’m off work. I get immediate rewards and even recognition from my husband. 😅

I feel we need alternatives to satisfy ourselves when we are bored. Like, scrolling through Amazon makes no sense (and I do it too on other shopping websites) and is a waste of time and idk...I feel we really need to come up with places/webpages/stuff to do that could really fulfil us. Am I making sense? Cause otherwise the shot of dopamine is too easy to get nowadays and I am addicted to it.

I read about the minimalists who talk about waiting 30 days before making a purchase. This way, you know it's not impulsive and if, at the end of the 30 days, you still want the thing, then it means it is important to you.

I’m dealing the same thing too. Since moving out to living on my own, I’m always spending a lot of things for my apartment but spending more on things that I’ve been wanting for a while. Now that I have everything I need, I’ve been having bad habits of spending what I want and some things I don’t really need. Starting from beginning of June, I’ve been cutting my spending habits short and limiting what I spend. My main priorities are to have money to pay off bills in a timely manner and save money for my birthday trip. I won’t be spending any money on clothes, shoes, jewelry, or bags. I can only spend money on food, gas, or bills.

I’m on the last few days of my no spend month for June, I’m so glad I did this but it’s also been a challenge for sure! It definitely made me aware of how much I spend on fast food and the same type of online shopping you talk about. Love this! I’ve always been good with my finances but the last few months I’ve been lacking for the first few times. Instead of 200-500€ left each month, it was more 5-100€- which is still good, but I love saving up for vacation or bigger stuff. This really makes me want to gamify saving again!

Creating/drawing gifts to give to friends is so fun and I love doing that for my friends too! I want to try wood burning some art pieces or trying to make a locket-like art piece. Knick knacks are so fun. I think impulsively buying as a way to escape emotions you feel, while not something I fully relate to, I relate to in the sense that my impulse is avoidance and scrolling on social media. I've been slowly breaking that down, and it definitely takes time!

I love this video so much. I'm going through something similar, especially since I recently left my job and don't have a steady source of income yet. Whereas before buy whatever without much thought, now I'm a little more mindful. It's a habit I hope to build, even if I start earning more money. I realize that I could control impulse buying better with online things versus being physically at a store. My most recent splurge was art supplies during my Japan trip in April, and I haven't touched them yet... so today I resolve to use them. :D I've always loved the idea of making something to give to others, and lately I've also been trying to give away things I don't use but are still in good condition. My biggest challenge is that I often have an attachment to things, either because of sentimentality or "I can use that someday." I don't think we can cut out spending altogether, but we can definitely learn how to be more mindful on what we spend our money on. Thanks for sharing your journey and being an inspiration.

I enjoyed your video and I'm super impressed with your results at the end of the month. I'm incorporating a no-spend challenge as part of my 2024 resolutions where I only spend on groceries and other non-essential I feel like I absolutely need 1 day a week. I'm hoping if items sit in my cart I'll lose interest and realize it wasn't needed after all. I'm also impressed with your artwork. I wanted to be an artist my whole life, I went to grad school, got my masters, I teach art, and now I feel like I've lost all drive to make art anymore at home. I'm hoping to find more time for artmaking again in 2024.

Whenever that itch of online shopping kicks in, I have this habit of adding things that I would want to buy in my cart or make a list of it somewhere. I give myself a minimum of 3 days to think about it. And surprisingly, it wouldn't even take me two days to forget about them. Which only means I never really needed them in the first place. When I'm outside, however, like at a mall or in a nice place with my friends, I put a note in my head of the thing that I found cute or wanted to buy and give myself 30 minutes to an hour before getting it. I'll be too busy with the other errands I'm running or will be having a great time with friends to even remember it a few minutes later. I learned that planning ahead and making a list when I go out on errands or grocery shopping also keeps me accountable of getting only what I need.

I resonate deeply with impulse buying. Often times I doom scroll before bed. I switch back from social media apps - instagram, tiktok, pinterest, online shopping apps... it goes on. I want to try this challenge and be mindful of the things that I spend my money on. Necessities vs. Impulse... I want to keep track of the price tag. I'm finding myself spending my paychecks within a week of obtaining it and I'm pretty much scratching my head wondering where all my money went. I stumbled across your video and I just subscribed, thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I loved seeing your perspective on this, it was so interesting. As a nearly 18yr old who is about to move out, I feel as though I've been doing this challenge every day. I started tracking my income and spending this month in my planner, and while I've only spent 15$ so far (it was on date night food and snacks) I also only make like 10$ a week from odd jobs for family and such. What I've been trying to learn from this is how often I impulse purchase, which I did a lot more often a few months ago in my senior year. Besides that, looking back on my memory of spending almost all of it has gone to the $30-50/month on nicotine, (specifically vapes) since about April. My best friend is trying to quit because she spends that much on it too, and when she said that a few weeks ago it got me thinking about whether it's worth it. I'm hoping to quit in the next year, but things are so hectic right now that I don't want to add withdrawal on top of it. Weird tangent, but just something to keep in mind is that sometimes you forget that spending that seems constant and normal isn't always necessary.

Thank you for making this video. It has deeply touched my soul. The depression I’ve been experiencing as of late is due to my inability to keep the money I work so hard for, with nothing to show for it. So again, thank you.

whenever i'm taking a break from spending, I go on Pinterest A LOT. I just put everything that I want to buy into my boards. If I remember what I wanted next time I allow myself to do some fun spending, I'll buy it. But I typically forget everything that I pinned lol

I did this with only spending money on necessities like shampoo, soap, toothpaste etc. and it's suprisinngly easy and learned my lesson on how to save money. I also compulse buying whenever I have my episodes because it just helped me to be happy in a way but it was so bad and financially a terrible idea so I have to to something about it. I finally had the time to read the books that I keep buying but never reading it, wearing clothes that still has the price tag and learning how to save not only money but with spending what I actually need than what I thought I actually want just because it look pretty.

I had a 12 month plan. I usually plan finencially in December/January. I realized a vew things. 1. My year looks different because I go to college so planning for 2 parts of the school year: sept till dec and jan to june. Other then that plan for june/juli to august(summer vacation). I did not used to make plans for my summers but I did this year and now I have enough to do in my free time. I defenetly failed my goals I set in January. We order out so I desided to focus on food and now I order less by default. Spending money on radom is a thing so less instagram and pinterest is a must. Being aware of your daily and weekly habits can help a lot. I also went back to the wishlist and I get about 6 things a year. Ehen I was a kid I got allowense so I saved up for something I realllyyyy wanted. Also I got a gift for my bday, sinterklaas, xmas and when I had good grades a gift during summer vacation. I also got monry for clothes every 3 months but I just buy when I really need something. Having a shopping dsy for spring summer and fall winter eould work if you really like shopping.

WooHoo! You did it! I enjoy watching my bank account grow and feel kind of weird spending money! I just kinda pretend like I have no money, which is totally not the case! It just does not make me feel good to impulse buy.

I'm pretty bad with my money, and I'm trying to be better. One thing I do recommend though, if you're a uni student, is looking for a class on it. I'm currently taking a 101 one-credit course and I've learned quite a bit about money management already. Since I'm taking it now, it's only a month long so it isn't too big of a commitment either. Also, just like with most things, putting it off for later minimizes the chances of it getting done. Yk how when you put off a task, it may never get done. Same with buying something. I'm putting my procrastination tendancies to work. It also helps that after a bit of time passes I usually realize that I didn't really need what I wanted to buy. Another tip, visualize the experience of owning the item. I've been wanting to buy slime recently. There are so many slime companies posting satisfying slime videos and it makes me want some. But I know that if I actually bought the slime, I would rarely use it. So then I just imagine how it'll become another one of those items that I don't really have a home for because lets face it, it just isn't that cute and it doesn't match my decor, so it'll end up drifting around the house getting shoved into some random corner of it that will become super cluttered and stressful. Then cleaning up that corner will sit on my to do list for a couple of months before I get around to cleaning it, but when I go to clean that corner I'll just be confronted by similar homeless items. So then I might force myself to use it to try to get rid of some of the guilt, but that will take away the joy of actually using the item and is another form of stress. Plus the containers seem too tall to fit in my desk, so it would minimize the chances of me actually using it because everytime I would want to I would have to hunt to find it. Now I don't want the slime anymore because the realistic future that I imagined with it was so stressful that it actually outweighed the joy I would get from owning it. Starter prompts: -How often will I use this item? Daily? Weekly? Monthly? Yearly? -Will I still want it after that much time has passed? -Is the cost of the item reasonable when compared to how much use I will get from it? -Imagine the most convenient home for this item, does it fit there? -If this item, for whatever reason, can't stay there, will it have a significant effect on how much you use it? -Do I have room in my space for this item? -Will owning this item cause me stress? If so, will the joy of owning it outweigh that? -If, after a period of time, I no longer like the item, what will I do with it? Can I gift it to someone, sell it, donate it, reuse it, etc. or will it end up in the trash? There are so many items in my life that I don't want, but because of how difficult it would be to get rid of them (or because I feel guilty since they really can only be trashed) I keep them and they continue to bring me stress. -Can I afford to buy it? Would the money spent on this item be taken away from something more important? -Could I borrow this item instead, check it out from an items library, rent it, buy it second hand, etc.? Still expensive, but a lesser evil since it'll probably be cheaper, less wasteful, and it won't clutter up your home. -Could the time spent dealing with this item/desire to shop be used more productively? This may not apply to everyone, but for me, instead of browsing facebook marketplace, I could be searching for art shows to enter. I could be coming up with ideas for artworks to enter into these shows. I could be updating my website. These things would take roughly the same amount of time BUT instead of using money they could make me some. -How long will it take for you to forget that you wanted this item?

Love your art and video!!! 😍 Another challenge to help you become less impulsive buyer could be styling clothes and accessories you have and not buy ANYTHING. I feel this will make you feel grateful and also help you up your fashion game with what you have and not rely on buying things to look good. OH! you could also learn different types of makeups to feel special and different rather than buying something! 💖💖💖

I would definitely recommend setting money aside for things that you want, small amounts every week/month, however you want to do it. That way, you don't feel guilty about spending that money and you have control over how much you're putting in😁

My problem with my no-spend mentality is that I deprive myself. I've been wanting a vitamix for 5+ years, and keep thinking the money would be better saved. And I haven't gotten a new tattoo in almost 5 years, either! I need an "it's ok to spend" video haha

This video is so good but by the moment I thought about applying the things you did I remembered that I already don't spend a coin on anything and I don't have any other way to cut expenses unless I stop buying groceries, stop paying rent or stop living in general 😂
