Europe has failed by forsaking simplicity and ease of repair for a small increase in efficiency. For example, a diesel powered air compressor made in Germany in 1985 is only marginally less efficient (5%) than one made today and is also much easier to repair, even without an instruction manual. So apart from slightly less pollution (which folks in India don't give a rat's about) we've actually gone backwards with a massive increase of self-defeating complexity along with poorer quality and reliability. Stationary Engines, small and large have a very big following in Australia, they are being recovered from swampy lagoons, rivers and shearing sheds where they've sat idle for many years, Then restored back to life. The external camshafts, tappets etc just make them appear to be a living machine when it's running. The rallies held where they are all run intermittently are great stuff.
@ryelor123Ай бұрын
Under load they don't run intermittently. I'm sure you know that but not everyone does. These engines were designed to run for many hours at a time. Maybe even a full workweek with 3 shifts per day. They probably didn't have to deal with nearly as many thermal cycles as car engines, lawn mower engines or other small engines.
@lukewise1227Ай бұрын
@@ryelor123 Ah, you've misunderstood, there may be up to 100 engines of different makes and requirements, they are run intermittently by their owners to give a demonstration of their pride and joy. From stationary pumps, to corn huskers, to large radial aero engines and even steam traction engines. The owners start them up for a while, let everyone see, then shut them down, go buy a coffee and walk around looking at the other engines running and swapping tall stories, which means, all the engines on display are not all running at once, they are running 'intermittently'. However there are engines known as a 'hit and miss' combustion cycle, where the firing of the cylinder and controlled by a governer system, so that the large flywheels will turn several times, for each single power stroke, which means less fuel is used.

Its an industrial engine. Industrial machinery is designed to make replacement of wear items much easier even if those wear items don't last as long as their counterparts in ordinary consumer products. I'm sure that thing has gone through many piston rings, cylinder liners, and rod bearings in its life. You can replace those same parts on modern consumer-grade cars but no one wants to.

(sorry for the poor grammar and spelling, I type quickly and rarely do much of a “spell check”) I grew up in the 1970’s on a cattle and sheep ranch in the western US. We had two very large Fairbanks Morris single piston motors with similar very large flywheels. They started the same way although, one person working very hard could crank until the engine rpm achieved speed sufficient to start. Once speed was up, we would take the crank and tap the large magneto on top of the motor. The magneto’s were 75 years old and would stick in a position where they wouldn't engage to create a spark, usually one or two firm taps and pop…. pop…. pop just barely fast enough to keep the flywheels turning. We ran ours on propane. One ran a series of pumps that pushed water up hill to stock tanks where we couldn't afford to drill additional wells. Normally you want to drill a well higher than any of the stock tanks and allow gravity to feed the tanks, which is what we did on 80% of our land. The other motor ran a pump jack that moved rods up and down on a 1000’ deep water well. This particular well was at the foot of the Sacramento mountains of New Mexico. We also had a well at about 6000’ msl that at one time used a Fairbanks Morris to run a pump jack. In the 1960’s we finally got electricity at that area and converted to an electric motor that ran the pump jack. It was a 900’ deep well. Our other well was about mid way up the most northern Guadalupe Mountains and it was 600’ deep. We ran a generator that ran a submersible pump on that well. My family sold the ranch in 1992 and the new owners sold off the Fairbanks Morris engines and pump jacks for scrap metal :( all the steel on these pump jacks and wells was made at Bethlehem Steel in Allentown Pennsylvania…. Which tragically is long gone also. These Firbanks M. engines were infinitely reliable and affordable to maintain. The US engineers and Manufacturers of heavy equipment, tools, etc really strove to make things reliable, simple to maintain and although expensive to purchase.…. They were designed to last a persons lifetime.

I worked at an old sawmill that had a similar engine running the saw and conveyor. It was sketchy as hell. There was a meth head guy who would throw bits of wood into the wheel and laugh his ass off. You would be working and suddenly there's a piece of wood whizzing past your head. I complained about him but he was the boss's son. So I got fired instead.
