30-Second Photoshop: Replace Background & Create Shadows

Learn how to place any object on any background and easily extract shadows without creating them from scratch with Photoshop. Using the power of Blending Modes and masking, we will make the most realistic shadows of a product by taking advantage of its original shadow; we will also learn how to adjust and control the lighting with Curves. This is an essential technique, especially if you are into e-commerce or product photography.

he forgot to mention that the object layer's background has to be white. otherwise, multiply won't work as shown in this video.

I would love to see if there is a way to extract shadows from a more complicated background other than just white.

I ll do my best to explain since english isn t my first language but you can turn the picture into black and white, then increase the whites and you ll end up with your shadow on a white surface that you can blend later onto the background, but you ll probably have to cut out the object and only keep the shadow. Im sure there are more ways to do that and probably simpler ones but this is what i know

It is important to add that this only works with a shadow layer that is a grayscale

You should make it clear that this will only work if the background of the object layer is solid white or very light solid grey like in the example, and the image should preferably be grey scale.

You could also double click on the layer to access the fx thingy and there will be a drop shadow you could use and adjust

You can also simply apply a drop shadow and go up to Layers and select "make layer" that makes the shadow be an editable object on its own layer. Tons faster and easier.

@@aper6014 true, that's where the editable bit comes in. Feather it, distort it, layer different levels of feathering. You get a process down. In InDesign to combat the fake look, I dupe a shape I want to drop shadow. Move it to the art board. Use the X Y arrows to move the shadow back on the page. I feather the shape on the art board to opacity, angle, distort, and I can make the shadow look real. Grab everything paste in a frame, now I have a clean design group I can move around the page as needed. Point is, you can make shadows realistic if you find techniques to modify them. 😃

i guess this could work.. but generally this guid doesnt work, you need to have a flat background, rhe source image needs to have a plain light background for the miltiply to work and in must situations this just dowant look good, learn to paint shadows by hand
