Forget all that... there's huge misconceptions that need to be cleared up: 1. "There were millions of Persians." * It was approximately 150,000. 2. "Leonidas took his 300 to face Xerxes." * Leonidas had 7,000 men. However, upon the traitor revealing a way to surround the Spartans, Leonidas permitted his men to retreat, yet he would not. * Guess how many did stay behind to be massacred? 300. That's where the 300 comes from.

@bdleo300 That's not what I said... I specifically said, "Leonidas had 7,000 men." Which he did. I did NOT say they were all Spartans. 300 of them were, in fact, Spartans. ...but the actual reason the 300 are remembered is because they were going to be surrounded; he sent them away to avoid their massacres. Him and his 300 remained and fought for (I believe) 3 or 4 days in order for the rest to safely exit stage left. At the beginning, there was 7,000 in total.

This movie is based on the "300" graphic novel, by Frank Miller (hence the dramatic lighting and visual effects). The reason they were able to fight the Persian army was because they forced them to bottleneck at the Hot Gates. Which means the Persians' sheer numbers are limited by the small entrance the Spartans purposely defended. Regarding the end, Leonidas didn't miss. His goal was to demonstrate that even a God King can bleed, and thus force the Persian army and people to see their king wasn't omnipotent.

@@ASSASSIN19923 Apart from the representatives of the other states who also fought to the death; the weapons, armour and tactics; the Spartan support personnel;... The movie is accurate as far as the comic goes, but should be taken as 'mythology' at best as regards the historical events. The Spartans would love the movie of course, they managed to keep their society limping on for over 100 years thanks to having a great PR and Propaganda strategy that wasn't exposed fully until the Peloponnesian wars.

Hey, Liv! You mentioned the narrator...he was played by David Wenham aka Faramir in 'Lord of the Rings'. And the last Spartan Leonidas speaks to was Michael Fassbender. The stylized shots were inspired by panels in the Frank Miller graphic novel, which is gorgeous to look at. Zack Snyder does this well, not just in '300' but in 'Watchmen as well, using the panels drawn by Dave Gibbons. The effect is a film that plays the drama really well, but also becomes a work of art to see.Take care! And...What's next? 😊😊😊

The "endless pit of darkness" is a well. Historically, the "This is Sparta" moment actually happened about ten years BEFORE Thermopylae, and it also happened in Athens as well. Persian messengers came to Athens and Sparta and demanded tribute of customary taxes (in the case of Athens) and earth and water (from Sparta). The Athenians threw the Persian messengers that came to their city into a pit used to execute condemned criminals, while the Spartans threw the Persians that came to Sparta into a well, telling them "Go dig it out yourself!".

While maintaining a social model that was based on slavery of another Hellenic people; the Spartan motive may certainly have been to remain free of Persian rule, but shouldn't be confused with a more modern interpretation of democracy and freedom as we recognise them in the West today. Athens and the other city states were responsible for and practitioners of democracy, Spartan society was much closer to a socialist/communist one.

The movie 300 is inspired by the history and tales about the battle of thermopylae in 480BC. What is true, what is story, what is legends. It is hard to determine. King Leonidas led a total of 7000 soldiers from different greek states to a battle to delay the persian army. The oracle in delphi did make a prediction. The predicition was that either Sparta looses everything, or they looses their king. So King Leonidas didn't see he had another choice. They did get betrayed by a greek that showed a path around the spartans, so they could attack them from multiple angles. Just as in the movie. I've read it was just a random farmer, I've read it was one looking for a great reward. That it was an outcast spartan, very unlikely. As a respond to this, majority of the greek soldiers evaquated so they could live to fight another day, but 300 spartans and 700 thespains stayed. The night before a spy from the persians watched the camp when the spartans started to parfume each other, prepare to fight naked. The persian said to Xerxes "they are giving up, they are just having orgies and parfuming each other." What they didn't know. When Spartans knew it was time to fight to the death. That no one would come out alive, they wanted to die the same way as they where born. Completely naked. So just imagine 300 spartans having even less clothes on than what they had in this movie? What is true, what is legends, what is tales. Very hard to tell. How big the persian army was? Impossible to tell. Some sources claim 120k. Other 4 million. It is impossible to know.

Point of historic fact about the "Immortals". The reason they were called that was that they would replace them as soon as they were killed in battle, never depleting there ranks. So no they individually would never live forever. Another is that this was a turning point in history due to the fact that it was considered that their sacrifice save democracy and the western world. But let's face it the Spartans where no saints...lol. Also, the reason the story is told in this dark/yellowish cinematic screen and the great beast being shown and a giant Cersei was that the narrator is telling the story to the 10k Spartan. So they are seeing it in their imagination as such.

Sparta was probably the first society to basically standardize genetic engineering. They basically set up a breeding program to only allow the best specimens to survive to adulthood. They also instituted an insane program to weed out the weak when it came to their society. Unfortunately, they were kind of assholes, and treated every other country as they themselves had been treated. Blunt, almost barbaric, devoid of any mercy/compassion, and while their society favored meritocracy, degrading was far easier than ascending in rank/stature. Ultimately, that's what led to their downfall. Their military was incredible, but their overall government was kind of a joke. The final straw as in 371 B.C when Thebes finally routed Sparta's army. They never recovered from it.

FYI the only Spartan people given grave markers with their names on them were Spartan warriors who died in battle and Spartan women who died in childbirth. Both were considered heroes who died in service to Spata. In actuality Leonidas died the 2nd day of battle. Spartans could not retreat as stated by their law. When Spartan warriors left for battle the family would hand them the shield saying "return with this or on it." Historians argue that the Persian army led by Xerxes was between 250,000 to one million strong. The Spartans and other Greeks( around 2000) fought so hard the Persian army lost its taste for battle. Spartans wore bronze chest head arn and leg armor and shield. While the Persian army wore cloth and leather with reed shields. The Persians were a light calvary while the Spartans were heavy tanks. Other things recorded in history "Then we'll fight in the shade" was stated by a Spartan captain. The Persians were astonished to hear rhe Spartans laugh after the first arrow volley. As the arrows bounced of their armor and shields. In the Rise of an Empire tells the story of the naval battle the happened during the battle of Thermopoylae.

Leonidas new that the 300 were going to die, his goals were 1. to delay the invading army so that the politics between the city-states of Greece could unit. 2. Demoralize the Persian forces by showing what just 300 Spartans could do. And 3. Create doubt in their god by showing that he could bleed like everyone else. Historically the war lasted about a year after the 300 fought at Thermopolis. Then on the same day the united Greek armies defeated the land forces and an allied navy completely wiped out the Persian navy. The unified Greeks then reconquered lost territory and drove the Persians out of Europe starting the decline of the Persian empire. So from Leonidas' point of view he was victorious.

Spartan hoplites were some of the most feared infantrymen in the Hellenic world. Raised from birth to be soldiers, encased in shining bronze helm, bracers, cuirass and greaves (not just a leather thong lol), and the trademark bronze Spartan shield that was just as effective as a bashing weapon as it was for defense... They were the classical equivalent of fully armored knights. The phalanx formation dominated ancient warfare for a long time, as cavalry were expensive and archers required lots of training (and arrows required numerous resources). Give a man a spear and a shield, and you've got yourself the beginnings of a phalanx. Much of the Persian infantry were conscripts or slaves, and they used wicker shields, which were easily pierced by the Spartan bronze spearheads. They didn't stand a chance against these professional warriors. The only reason they won was through attrition. The Spartan tactics at Thermopylae (literally, "Hot Gates") are still studied at war academies today. The Greek army motto is still "molon labe", Leonidas' response to the Persians demand that they lay down their weapons: "COME AND GET THEM" This is also very much representative of another thing Sparta is famous for; the Laconic phrase (named after the region of Greece they lived in, Laconia). Very terse, to the point answers. Philip II of Macedon once sent a messenger asking Sparta if he should come as friend or foe. Their response? "Neither".

One of the better works of historical fiction of the last few decades, for sure. Even though the story here is heavily fictionalized and romanticized, it still does justice to King Leonidas. The six to seven thousand Greeks who fought beside him were still wildly outnumbered and excellently played their part in delaying the Persians, which eventually opened Xerxes' forces up to be decisively destroyed by the Athenian navy.

The narrator supposedly was indeed send back to Sparta. When the spartans and the rest of Greek citystates join after the 300 died at Thermopylae. It is said that when the battle started, he stormed the ennemy, died for he could not stand not having died with Leonidas at Thermopylae. Also part of the depiction of the Persians is I believe meant to be the interpretation of the narrator to rouse the spartans. However the design of the Persian arrowheads is supposedly accurate.

So the real account of the 300 Spartans is obviously much less cinematic and epic. But It very much is a real event. (Though, the Spartans did wear body armor). Ares, Artemis and Athena were the major Gods Spartans worshipped and paid tribute too. Athena did become less worshipped in Spartan society at the beginning of the Peloponnesian war, as she was the patron Goddess of Sparta's enemy, Athens. Many people believe the reason Ares often loses his battles against Athena in mythology literature is because Athens often had the writers and scholars who came up with these stories and were a bit butthurt that Sparta actually defeated Athens in their war (Which happens after the Greek-Persian war)

A Greek force of approximately 7,000 men, including Leonidas' 300 Spartans, marched north to block the pass in the middle of 480 BC. The Persian army was vast ranging between about 100,000 and 150,000 soldiers. The Persian army arrived at the pass in late August or early September. The vastly outnumbered Greeks held them off for seven days (including three of battle) before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most famous last stands. During two full days of battle, the small force led by Leonidas blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could traverse the narrow pass. After the second day, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by showing the Persians a small shepherd path leading behind the Greek lines. Leonidas, aware that his force was being outflanked, dismissed the bulk of the Greek army and remained to guard their retreat with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians. It has been reported that others also remained, including up to 900 helots and 400 Thebans. With the exception of the Thebans, most of whom reportedly surrendered, the Greeks fought to the death. Themistocles was in command of the Greek navy at Artemisium when he received news that the Persians had taken the pass at Thermopylae. Since the Greek defensive strategy had required both Thermopylae and Artemisium to be held, it was decided to withdraw to the island of Salamis. The Persians overran Boeotia, then captured the evacuated city of Athens. The Greek fleet-seeking a decisive victory over the Persian armada-attacked and defeated the invaders at the Battle of Salamis in late 480 BC. Wary of being trapped in Europe, Xerxes withdrew with much of his army to Asia (losing most to starvation and disease), leaving Mardonius to continue the Greek campaign. However, the following year saw a Greek army decisively defeat the Persians at the Battle of Plataea, ending the Persian invasion. -excerpt from Wikipedia. As a Yank from the U.S., I'm well aware of the word "whilst." However, I must confess you are the only person I have ever heard utter it. -Virginia Beach, Virginia

It's a well know tactic to lure the enemy into a chokepojnt. Ita the basis of an ambush. The key here is 1) the enemy took the bait and 2) the Spartans operated at low level units, hence their coordination which when combined with a larger becomes an enormous force. Then it was steel, these days it's a wall of lead. Regardless, it's very hard to breach. Nothing beats a good defense than a good offense.

The true story although less fantastical is just as impressive. Many of the most badass one liner's in the movie are taken from historical accounts by writing from the times. Spartans were trained actually trained in sass and rewarded by their tutors for sick ass burns. Also according to Herodotus, Leonidas was told by the Oracle at Delphi that either he would die or Sparta would fall, so in his own mind at least he marched to the battle knowing he would die... Not leonidas but all greeks go to "delphi" threre was the "oracle" amd she say that i order to greece win a spartan king must die, and say " a spartan king" because Sparta allways have 2 kings at the same time for spartans dont like the idea than one man posses than much power. just stop relate history with this movie is just entertainment.

The main reason the Persians struggled with the Greeks was that they were a Cavalry based Military, and their infantry units had to be very lightly armored to keep up with their Cavalry. Greece is a very mountainous nation, so cavalry are almost totally useless, as a horse will not charge a block of pikes no matter what you do to the horse. The Persian Infantry faced the heaviest type of infantry around at the time: Hoplites. Hoplites were the main stay of every single Greek City state, and within the confines of the Hills and valleys of Greece, sending Light infantry directly against Hoplites is certain suicide. In the actual battle the Persians had to use their own Hoplites from Iona(modern Western Turkey).

Fanstastic work as always Liv. Mod can't wait for the next Some true history from a Greek: Leonidas fought indeed the last day along with 299 Spartans and 700 Thespians although he released the last from their oath to him. The Persian army was 1million strong and there was a storm indeed during landing believed to be caused by Zeus himself. During this storm Xerxes lost almost 1/3 of his troops. The Immortals were indeed an elite team in the Persian Army but not as they are pictured in the movie of course. Spartans' war tactics included the famous "Phallanx" as shown in the first battle where the king is on the tip of the Phallanx and his men around him with their shields up. If a Spartan died another took his place immediately and so the Phallanx never broke. They were using long spears called "Sarissa" which were 4 meters long so impossible for enemies to reach. King Leonidas and his men were betrayed by Efialtes a Spartan sheepherder who shown the Persians the secret goat path that ended behind Spartan forces. As for the Ephors they were the elders' council in Sparta and their verdict was like law. There is a statue in Thermopylae dedicated to King Leonidas that says: Oh, foreigner passing by, announce to the Lacedaemonians that we are buried here, obeying their orders

Hi! This movie is epic and leans heavy myth and amplify the heroic last stand. In reality the battle was fought over 3 days and it's the mythology and the example of Leonidas and his (probably few thousand) men who died to either buy time for a majority of the Greek army to retreat or perhaps some other reason we don't know about. In the end this was still a victory for the persians who went on and destroyed the city of Athens. After the Greeks won a huge sea battle at Salamis the Persian army retreated (mostly) and they eventually pushed the Persians out. 200 years later Alexandros III of Macedon (also known as Alexander the Great) invaded and destroyed the persian empire and probably burned down Persepolis as repayment for the burning of Athens holy sites. Much of this history lies between myth, storytelling and fact. Broadly myth and story is in details on numbers. Estimated army strengths are typically always inflated. This is a heroic tale about our common past (if you are European) where a few brave men set an example for us to try to live up to. If you are persian (Iranian or hail from around that region) this is probably just another victory and rather insignificant.

If you're interested in watching something similar in a serial format, check out the Spartacus series starting with Blood and Sand, the prequel Gods of the Arena, then continuing on with Vengeance, and the penultimate War of the Damned. Set before and during the Third Servile War is about Spartacus' rise against the Roman Empire leading an army of freed slaves and gladiators. John Hannah portrayed actual Gladiatorial owner Batiatus with Lucy Lawless (yes, Xena herself) playing his wife. The series is pretty much 300 with the gory scenes of any horror movie involving dismemberment, and the sex scenes of a blue movie/softcore porn (full frontal nudity included) set in Roman Times.

As usual, I’ll have to give you the History, dearest Liiv. You asked “What kind of adult men does Sparta raise?” Well, violent ones, basically, but in the Ancient world, Sparta was famous and widely known as “land of beautiful women.” See, with Spartan men away at war so frequently, Spartan women were expected to learn the profession of arms, as well. They were, literally, the last line of defense. Women trained with weapons and so, had the question been invented, Spartan women could all answer the question, “Why, yes, I DO workout, thank you very much.”
@MrSmithla
@MrSmithla 2 жыл бұрын
Now, you asked the very sensible question, “They can’t fight a war with just 300 men.” Historians and scholars of the period propose the theory that the Spartan elders, as depicted, refused to allow the whole Spartan Army go to war. Leonidas selected the exact number it took to fill the Thermopylae pass. Now, numbers in the ancient world, such as size of an army, don’t represent accurate accounting but, more, political statements. The accounts do state Xerxes’ army numbering up to a million but no scholar accepts that. It was just impossible to field, water and feed an army even close to that. Accounts say Xerxes’ army, literally, ‘drank rivers dry’ and his actual force, probably around 125,000, did do that. Holding a force like that up, even for a few days, causes huge problems for a force that large.
@MrSmithla
@MrSmithla 2 жыл бұрын
Greece is a very dry, rocky place, very little fertile ground, food or water. There’s a scene just before Xerxes comes to meet Leonidas after the first engagement when Leonidas opines, “If they assassinate me, all of Sparta goes to war. Pray they’re that stupid. Pray we’re that lucky.” In actual History, Sparta had two kings and each had a personal guard of 200 men. These men were drawn from the most recent graduating class from the agoge. So, all 18-19 years old with no real experience in battle. The year they’d spend on ceremonial guard gave them some life experience, they were probably rather the best looking but, according to Spartan law, still 10-11 years shy of the minimum age to marry, so no member of the ceremonial guard would have a born anything much less son.
@MrSmithla
@MrSmithla 2 жыл бұрын
So, the latest theory goes that Leonidas gathered 300 (not 200) volunteers with born sons from the most important Spartan families and went to hold the Persian army at Thermopylae while the Persian army’s real target, the city of Athens, was evacuated. Leonidas intended to die along with every man in his band knowing full well that once word that one of Sparta’s kings and members of the most important Spartan families were killed, all of Sparta would go to war.
@MrSmithla
@MrSmithla 2 жыл бұрын
The evidence, a little circumstantial, for this is that a Spartan’s final exam at the agoge was to sneak out of his barracks in the middle of the night, strangle a helot (a slave of the Spartans that did their agricultural work ((If all the Spartans are soldiers, somebody has to grow the food))), then sneak back in to his barracks without getting caught. If he got caught he was punished severely. So, the important ethos is to sneak, kill and get away with it. Leonidas chose to occupy a position he knew the Persians could get around with the goat path. He planned on NOT getting away with it. Acting that contrary to what he’d been taught might be a clue to his motives.
@MrSmithla
@MrSmithla 2 жыл бұрын
On the ‘land of beautiful women’ piece, the woman of the ancient world, said to be the most beautiful ever, with a ‘face that launched 1000 ships,’ was ‘Helen of Troy,’ who was, actually, from Sparta.

300... Its about Spartan King; Leonidas (Gerard Butler -- The Phantom of the Opera) and his royal guard of soldiers numbering just 300. the “300” takes inspirations from the real Battle of Thermopylae and the events that took place in the year of 480 BC in ancient Greece. An epic movie for an epic historical event. and the Slow motions of the fight scenes is epic, you will never forget this movie and its truly worth every min... Why did Leonidas say I hope you live forever? Leonidas' last words are to Ephialtes on the battlefield, before he is engulfed by a shower of arrows: "I hope you live forever." This, we deduce, is the most profound Spartan insult, someone who is a betrayer of a lowlife parasite that incorporating Leonidas' disgust for the treasonous traitor with the Spartan ideal of dying a "beautiful death" in battle. where the Traitor/s would live on, while being a Slave on their Knees to another.
