Spartan commander was sneaky, pretended to sally out of the fort to attack the siege weapons, but the real plan was to run away and escape the siege...

When you are defending, your troops should be in defensive stance. The biggest mistake was to go down from siege tower when you dont have the numbers. Otherwise this was defendable.

Actually an incident like this did happen in the Greco-Italian war of 1940. A unit of Greeks were out of ammo, so they began throwing rocks to the advancing Italians. The attackers fled back :)

Why not have your Spartans hold the bridge from the tower to the wall? A shield wall and the numbers advantage your guys would have had woulda won you the battle. Going down that tower made you lose all of your advantage.
