Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Saturday! Today I’m back with another studio apartment makeover! It’s a super tiny bachelor pad cramped with furniture, even though the tenant wants space for a Queen-sized bed, a sofa and room to workout and entertain. The one item that will solve this all? A Murphy bed that doubles as a sofa! Plus a coffee table that folds down and can be easily stored away, and other dual-purpose furniture pieces. I hope this video gives you inspiration for your own tiny studio apartment makeover!

As someone who’s not very girly, I really enjoy when you make over a guy’s space and/or do more masculine decor. This one turned out great!
@user-yb6tk1ru6x
@user-yb6tk1ru6x 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's easier to make masculine decor look good. Pompoms, pastels and floral prints can easily end up looking cheap and tacky unless done with a bit of thought.

Hmm, I wouldn't necessarily call any style feminine or masculine or girly and manly. I'd use different adjectives instead, like cute vs sophisticated, or cosy vs minimal, vintage vs contemporary, boho vs industrial, etc. I dislike it when people associate pink, pom poms, bows, pastels, florals, extra decor and what not with women and more modern, sleek styles and decor with men. I acknowledge it exists, but it's actually something we desperately need to get rid of, because every style is a choice that anyone can make, regardless of gender. A man might love pink walls and fur throw pillows and a woman can enjoy darker palettes and elegant decor, for example. This style is MUCH closer to mine and I'm a woman as well.
@ameXkage
@ameXkage 2 жыл бұрын
@@tn-t I agree a million percent - saying that more cutesy and frivolous elements are automatically for women bothers me, and calling a sleek, functional and more dark-toned space a "masculine" space really doesn't sit well with me either. Spaces are just spaces, and in today's day and age calling a space "masculine" feels like calling pants "masculine" - if a woman wears them, what does that make her? I think we should be assuming more neutrality of things and stop gendering everything, including colors and shapes.

I love the inspiration Alexandra creates. It's all done in a day or two, so we can always DIY with extra time available, after all. IKR, I was about to ask where he bought his floor lamp when she swapped it out, and for one with more legs!

@@FurnitureFan I really like the inspiration as well. But even though the renovations are done in a day or two, she thinks about it in advance, orders everything, evaluates the space before so it wouldn't really be so hard to look at Facebook marketplace or something instead of just ordering new. I don't expect it every time or even most of the time but given how many people look up to her for ideas, it would be nice to plant the seed that not everything needs to be new.

you'd paint the sides of a standalone cabinet the same color of a feature wall? i think that would probably look a tad messy. maybe a few decals around the handles the same color as the back wall would be tasteful and bring it together and also be easily reversable if he ever moves out.

If you live by yourself, you can totally just leave it as a bed everyday; you really only change it to a sofa when you have people over, which isn't that different from doing some cleaning and general tidying up which most people would do if they're entertaining. Firstly, welcome back Xico!!! Help me understand the choice to replace curtains with sheers, yes you get light and airy vibes during the day but what about privacy at night? With the lights on??.. and also the glare on the TV?.. I'm not hating, I'm genuinely wondering how one deals?
@kiri_downbad7421

I’m guessing it was a cost factor for the length or maybe to maintain the light in the room? He might not be on the ground level too as far as privacy and since it’s day time, it might be reading more sheer than it actually is at night also. Idk 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m more of a blackout curtain type of girl ya know? Lol
@heidi3149

Personal preference - semi sheer curtains still provide privacy at night, and natural glare on the TV is way better than gross curtains that weigh the whole room down and block out light for plants :/
@rustiemills2301
@rustiemills2301 3 жыл бұрын
I prefer double rods. You get the benefit of sheers when you want the room to be as light and airy as possible and then you pull the heavier curtains closed when you want less light and more moodiness or coziness.

I only have semi sheer curtains like this in my apartment. They provide ample privacy at night with light on, and there's no harsh glare on the TV either (the curtains diffuse the light really well), so it's hardly a problem, unless you have a really reflective and not bright TV. I can never go back to black out curtains ever again !

This is my favorite makeover thus far! The use of color (other than pink), the creative and functional solutions, and the emphasis of light in the space. SO GOOD.

A friend in NYC saved a ton of money by putting a chaise lounge in front of her Murphy bed and used sofa cushions as the backing.

What does a "Bachelor Pad" scented candle smell like? Cold pizza and gym socks? Studio pads are scary small. Great job!

You have such a creative eye. That bright colour on the wall I never would've thought could look good, but when you put in all the furniture and decor it was perfect. Such a cool studio pad I'm obsessed 😍🙌

It looks FABULOUS!! Love the bed/couch, love the wall colour. You really turned it into a stylish apartment, instead of just a “bachelor pad”. Great job!

Ohhh a tip to see if you want to carry on the colour from a wall or where to cut it off..it to paint the colour on paper and then stick it on the area your not sure about...then you can see if you want it there or not without painting and then hating it.....I did that on my own house and loved the flexability it gave me :)

Yes! I was toying with the idea of painting new white magazine holders to match my accent wall. I tested it out on a cereal box to see the effect. I ended up painting three cereal boxes cut diagonally & never had to buy any holders 😏

Alex, you really did such an amazing job!!! I knew that bed was going to be expensive, but well worth the price!!! Everyone in a studio apt needs to see this!!! I wish I had a third bedroom. I would definitely make it an office/ guest room and do this.

PS. I would love to see you do a masculine decor with a feminine touch and vice versa. I would love to see you do a make-over with constrasting styles. Like one of the inspo photos Scott send you: classical paintings paried modern furniture and lamps: dynamic, interesting and calm at the same time. Keep up the good work👍😊

I LOVE that wall color, but I'm kind of disappointed by how it's basically all covered by the Murphy bed. I would have either painted the opposite wall or painted at least the outside of the Murphy bed. Love all the design choices made for this space and the utilization is *chef's kiss!*

I think the color peaking through more when the bed comes down is the whole point of the color. On the opposite wall it would’ve overpowered and make the place look smaller.

Actually re-watched this twice and noticed their was art you brought in & could have used with more to magically create even more harmony as the white frame of the bed does impact strongly but truly over time and adding paint maybe behind the bike & More Art in this space with the accent color it will become even more awesome then it already is Note: someone mentioned possible need for blackout curtains well another way to bring in color is with Roman shades on the window with the linen curtain or by the way seeing that color at Target so bedding would Pop it more too Love the whole design ethetically ... Really we all just see ways to punch up that accent Wall.. Love This
