These colleges did not need to steal bodies to make progress for anatomical research for the field of medicine. Interestingly, Chicago medical colleges, as some of the other big cities, played by the rules in the late 1800's. They obtained their bodies from families with permission, dead convicts, and others unclaimed corpses at the morgue. They didn't steal them. And here - Chicago University turned out some great doctors; as one of the top medical establishments in the country. That's why we don't have the stories here, there were laws passed and followed. I tasked our friend Brittan to find just one story at either Rosehill, Graceland or any other cemetery here where a Chicago area University stole a body. There is nothing in print. He searched the library archives with intensity. Nothing found. That is because it wasn't perpetrated here by the schools. Although we did have a handful of unscrupulous individual doctors here doing it. But not in Indiana. And not in Ohio...and a few other states that had no laws passed against this practice. I am focused on the states and colleges that broke the rules. Some of these schools actually had "ghouls" travel to Chicago from out of state to steal bodies. The point is, they didn't need to steal the bodies to make medical science anatomical research progress. If Chicago colleges could do things legally and do it well, then they could have. But they didn't.

Was it the colleges in England that began the practice of stealing the bodies to advance their knowledge? Either way it was hideous 😑 Thanks for the research Brittan and thank you Ron for clarification.

Wow! And I read how meticulously the "ghouls" had to repair each grave so it wouldn't be noticed that the earth had been disturbed since the original burial a day or two earlier. I just can't even begin to imagine what the job would have been like. Those men most certainly had to have had some awful nightmares after dragging bodies out of their caskets. And with a big iron hook in the jaw of the body! 😢

Yes, they would have had to leave it as neat as possible to avoid trouble later on, I'm sure. Maybe put back whatever flowers or commemorative items that were left on the grave, etc.

Great story and style of presentation, Ron! I remember your coverage of Marilla in that trio of videos you did. Just a beautiful day to film this and the workers were kind enough to take a break so you could tell your story in peace and quiet. Everything looks so peaceful there. Just imagine what it must have looked like at night when they were busy " on the job", with flickering lanterns , shovels and all the other tools to accomplish their task. Just grotesque but as you said , greed was at the heart of it....the medical demand was sure there, I'm sure those doctors rationalized it all away while in Court.

The beginning was so dramatic in black and white, and the suspenseful music!!!! Wow. An incredible story, just thinking of how many bodies were stolen in that time period. Shocking! And infuriating that the doctors got off, ugh! Cant say i was surprised tho. Where i live was a ln almshouse turned into psychiatric hospital from the 19th century and this happened here too. At one time, it was even legal to do that with unclaimed bodies of patients. Fascinating story Ron, great work!

Unfortunately, there are probably empty graves not only in this country but in Europe as well & I have heard that families that had the means paid someone to guard the graves of their loved ones & in some areas they installed cages over the graves to keep out grave robbers. If the grave robbers were never caught it is unimaginable how bodies they snatched! This is one of the reasons why burial vaults (in the ground)became required in many places.

What a “ghoulish “ story Ron. I’ve watched your videos for a while now, always good history and archive photos. I’m a retired embalmer and funeral director, and those times around early 1900’s, probably some people were embalmed. (Not done same as today) but still somewhat embalmed and preserved. Maybe the doctor Alexander knew the bodies that had been embalmed. ? When I was in mortuary college in 1970’s we would embalm the cadavers for the medical school. The deceased bodies were donated to medical school.
