A friend of a friend bought a brand new high performance Yamaha 4 wheeler. The dealer told him to take it easy for a while to break it in. The guy disregarded this advice and rode it wide open all day. By the end of the day it would not start or run. He took it back to the dealer and lied to them about not breaking it in correctly. The dealer did rebuild the motor, no charge. Some people have no common sense.

That crank being bone dry is a dead giveaway it wasn't getting oil due to none being mixed in the gas. If it had premix in it the crank and rod would have had looked wet with a film of oil on it when you removed it. That wiped out all the crank bearings and I'm surprised the piston didn't seize.

If you own a two-stroke motor, you have to leak-test it. Leak testing is not a gimmick or snake oil, people. Cylinder head and piston show signs of detonation, especially the piston. If you have bad enough air leaks and a leak test is not passable, then this is what the outcome will be.
@ar2043
@ar2043 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I would always leak test a two-stroke rebuild. Now I know there are plenty of mechanics out there who can do it and skip the leak test, but it just makes sense to do it so you know for sure you are good to go in the leak department.

My guess is one of three things, if not all 3, he ran it with no gas in the oil, some fools buy an mx bike and do not know you have to add oil to the gas. He ran it with no coolant in the radiator, or something in the cooling system was bad, a bearing, an impeller, or a seal. And who in their right mind pays $3k for a bike with the oil drain plug welded shut, that is insane. And if he welded it shut, he is insane, and dishonest for not saying anything about it before selling it. I would not pay $1.200 for a parts bike that has a drain plug sealed shut with JB weld, maybe $500 at the most.

Could have overheated because of no coolant in the radiator. I just rebuilt a 99 RM80 that had blew up 4 months after it was supposedly rebuilt. What I found was the 2 water pump bearings went bad and chewed up the impeller shaft seal. Most of the Coolant had leaked into the oil. The radiator only had a couple of ounces of coolant left in it which will definitely cause it to overheat.
@Antiquefarmequipment

And I think, if I remember my lessons and research,, An "OIL Rich" mixture, will actually make the fuel mixture leaner, theory being additional oil displaces fuel, equals a leaner air fuel mix....check it out. By the way, love your videos

Just finished a 03 with the same exact issue. There was oil in the gas but it was jetted super lean. Once I finished it, I went as rich as I could on jetting without fouling plugs and I’m running half and half 110 and 93 non ethanol. Both of those things combined have made a night and day difference in how cool the engine runs. I’ll adjust the jetting a little leaner once it has some hours under its belt.

Maybe the skirt hole. But it was clearly an oil issue of some kind. Hard to bigger up that many bearing and the piston and have good case oil. Also I’m not there but that cylinder looked fried to me. With that piston looking like that there had to be some cylinder damage. There did look like some wall overheating at a minimum maybe where that skirt damage was. I hope you jetted it well for him. 23:29 I see plating missing next to the hot exhaust port, (is easier to see when cleaned up though), and a lot of pits on the piston also, with the grey "death ash" on it. It seized because it was too lean. Cylinder can be replated if needed. Gotta do a leak down test for air leaks, fix them, then jet it. The spark plug should have little aluminum specks on it also that came from the piston when it was running lean and eating the piston away.

Get an OEM crank and use a Pro-X rod along with OEM main bearings seals.

Joe, thanks for all your great content… as for this video and dirt bike, I have a theory about what happened. I think who ever rebuilt the engine forgot to put oil in it, started up and possibly rode it, then discovered their mistake added oil and returned it to the guy you bought it from. That would explain the crank and bearings being cooked and the stuck rings.. Just a thought……Thanks again and good luck!

From what I could see, the holes not being drilled in the piston skirt where the skirt contacts the port bridge, was not what caused the engine to fail. Wondering if it was sabotaged or run without 2 stroke oil. Was the inner head orange pinched from improper installation? Couldn't tell if it was pinched or fried.

Awesome video im leaving with my opinion that it was something in rebuild or fuel wish the old feller wouldn't have lied about the jb welded oil plug you also forgot to add in possible new case once you figure out if its repairable or not

Thats Detonation. When you rebuild it i suggest going bigger on the main jet and richer on the air screw to start with just to be safe

It’s very common knowledge that the lower bearing needle cage materials are junk in hot rods cranks. That’s what did all the damage

Your channel is the bomb. I have been watching for hours. Do you flip these or do you keep them all?

This all probably happened because they didn't drill the little holes in the piston. So things weren't getting lubricted. I still don't understand the oil drain bolt. If they JB welded it because it was leaking, just re-tap the threads and get a new bolt. Not JB Weld it , So it makes it a pain in the rear end to change the oil.

The piston is chewed up from a lean run condition the inside of the top of the head looks pitted from lean burn also. Fuel cools the engine more then the engine coolant itself

I look at a used 125 the other day, guy was trying to take me to the cleaners, clutch was definitely on it's way out, very low compression. Glad I watched some of these videos so I knew what to look for. I would've bought the bike to work on if he would take like 5-800 for it.

I really enjoy your content and am learning so much watching your videos. I was wondering how you learned to work on small engines. Are you self taught or did you go to school for it?

My guess is they smacked the crank into the case half with a hammer or mallet which closed up the big end bearing clearance. Then the piston ate the bearing material. Would also explain the stripped thread on end of the crank as a hammer wouldve damaged it/mushroomed it

A full rebuild kit are $300-400 they are cheap so that will be a $1500-1800+ bike when done
