Well, I finally got around to doing the final tweaks to this amp and it's turned out to be a real ripper. I knew something was a bit off, but I was a little burned out on this project after dealing with that direct coupled 6SN7 mess I started with. Sometimes it's best to just walk away for a while and come back with a fresh pair of eyes and ears!
I'm glad I waited, as getting the Analog Discovery 2 and the Audio Analyzer Suite is what lead me to the problem and the solution. I won't spoil what I found, but we were 150 ohms on one resistor away from audio bliss!
I uploaded the final-final version of the schematic and BOM here!

Whoa! Just got through binge watching on this entire set of videos and I am deeply impressed. There's really nothing on YT that comes close to the depth of instruction and completeness of building that you provide. This is just amazing. Congratulations on a tremendous project and really thoughtful problem solving! Thanks for sharing! Best wishes! J

Oh BTW, I forgot to mention that I'm a senior radar engineering technician. I used to work on a 1957 radar that used tubes and magnetron and amplitron. We even had 866A types in the PS rectifier. Now, I work with klystron tubes and TWTA traveling wave tube amplifiers. So my audio hobby plus ham radio hobby using 6146B with 12BY7A and 6L6GC with 6146B modulators all is a lifestyle. Thanks again Skunkie!!!!!

Thanks for your vids. I really enjoy them a lot. Just like you, I’m not an EE, just a hobbyist. Seeing you build this 300B amp was fantastic, and has been especially helpful. I’ve been doing the DIY, modding, upgrading, etc. thing for a while now. Just built a 6922 based tube buffer. Thanks again for the info in your vids! Looking forward to more. 👍🎶🙂🔊

Stumbled across your 300B DIY video series ~ I find your listening and tweaking method vs just measurement quite refreshing. I used an LED + Schottky diode combo to bias a 6DJ8 SRPP similar to your fixed bias cathode follower LED + Resistor with excellent results driving a parallel feed AVVT 20SL DHT amp. Keep up the good work :).

Really good work on the schematic! So many technical details and principles you mentioned I have also discovered myself the past years by experimenting, making notes and trying to make my own designs. And I'm still learning as I go along. With a scope, tone generator, multimeter and a calculator (and mistakes) you can figure out how to make an amplifier work correctly which is so rewarding.

Great videos! I've built a kit based Hagerman phono preamp and then designed and built a 6SN7 preamp borrowing from other designs. Your videos would have made those projects so much easier and more enjoyable. All the best.

Great series, thanks for making and sharing. I think people like us that build stuff have so many projects in our heads it's hard to stick to one actual build from start to finish. Getting burned out on a build when it's at 90% finished is so typical. I have half a dozen tube amps at ca 90%... I think creative people have a slight (or heavy) ADHD condition :-D We start off very enthusiastic but quickly want to build something else... Hard to stay focused. But at least we build a lot of stuff and that's what matters. The frequency analysis using FFT is super informative when trying to see the types of distortions. Looking in the time domain at the sinusoid only allows normal people to see the point of clipping. It is impossible to see a few percent of bent sinusoids. The FFT shows even hundreds of percents all the way down to the noise floor of the instrument or amplifier. I'd love to see the Analog Discovery's FFT function on one of your shows. I am considering that tool myself. I use Pico Scopes and the FFT mode is more used than the time domain scope. Regarding 6SN7 in a cascode configuration I wonder if they are a tad short of headroom. Those tubes 'like' a bit voltage. 6922/6DJ7 are very happy at Vp around 100V and it would be interesting how they would perform here. You know there are octal tube bases where you might arrange a noval socket onto so a 6922 can pop right in there... But I am sure your amp sounds great as is, I am just curious. Looking forward to more projects.

Yes, this combo is starving for headroom. If someone wants to -fully- drive a 300B, a 6SN7 is probably the wrong tube. The best thing about the Analog Discover is the Audio Analyzer freeware that works with it. I did a short video about it here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rMCUf5mb0qmupnk.html And yeah, sometimes I do need to walk away from a project for a bit :)

Getting the bias right put the driver tube into its most linear range of operation. Lopsided distortion on a 'scope usually stems from incorrect bias. I'd bet that if you broke down the harmonic content before you correctly reset it, you'd have tons of even harmonics (2nd, 4th, etc.).
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't see any lopsided clipping before *shrugs* Glad it's all happy now :)

Thank you for informative videos. I appreciate the way you explain complexity of designs and make them understandable for an average hobbyist. I have a question from you and that's I listen to classic, jas, R&B and soft rock music. what type of tube amplifier would sound sweet and excellent for these types of music, EL34 or 300B tubes.
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics

Honestly, they both can sound great! Some of it depends you how efficient your speakers are, a 300B amp will have a little more power.

I enjoyed this series. Do you think if you used a higher voltage output power transformer and different audio output transformers you could make the amp even better with even lower thd? I see Hashimoto HC-203U transformers are reasonable priced on ebay and other places.

When you do experimenting with the circuit, for example finding the right resistor values to get a desired voltage drop, what simulation software do you use, or do you have a large stock of resistors and caps to experiment live ?

@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics OK, thxs! Involves some risk taking then, I suppose ? Voltage may rise somewhere to levels lethal for some component that has to be identified after death, or no ?

Thank you for your reply. From what I have heard so far It seems that EL34 is better for classic, R&B....... . I pay attention to details of music and warm sound of tub. I have send you an email on your web site and i will wait to hear from you. Do you assemble your designed amplifiers for your customers, if so what is the cost. I am interested in hi end tube amplifiers. Thank you
