This video is nearly 18 minutes long. Engine strip on the Land Rover Discovery / Defender/ RRC 300tdi engine. From seeing the condition of the ancillaries we expected the engine to have been seized having been standing so long. Pleasant surprise.

It always surprises me how relaxed I am watching your videos ... This was strange therapy but very enjoyable ... I might strip down my 300tdi I pulled out today just for fun... not that it needs it as it was only rebuilt a few thou ago...

Just a bit of safety info on lifting heavy gear the strop that runs over the hook on the crane can slide over the hook due to any differential loads resulting in the load swinging violently round the hook best to loop the strop rond the hook once to prevent this or use two smaller strops Just talking through experience and wanted to pass it on. great video Thanks

Very interesting video. Nice to see it come to pieces slowly, but even better to see it coming back to shape. Excellent video

Excellent video. What we do with our load straps when they are no longer fit for service is cut them up so no one will attempt to use them in the future and possibly hurt or kill themselves. Love the channel!

+Land Rover Toolbox Videos It dawned on me one day to start doing it because I can see people using stuff they found dumpster diving and then it failing. We've all done it. One man's trash and all that.

I have a set of axle stand I got out of a dumpster as you call them. They were thrown away because they didn't have a safe working load marked on them. 10 tonne stands for a 3 tonne vehicle is okay. Much comes down to common sense really and a sense of ones own preservation. On the other hand there are a few professionals I know that could win a Darwin award.

excellent video Chris as always, gives me an idea of what a 200tdi might be like when i eventually rebuild one.

All engine blocks are the same really but the other bits are in different places. 200tdi has a ladder frame to strengthen the cylinder block between the sump and cylinder block. Oil pump is in a different place bit it is basically the same. Although I will add the parts are not the same as the 300tdi. It is a different engine. 200tdi and 2.5 NAD have a lot more in common.

@@trailerfitter2 heya. I want to get a defender but only old models are cheap while newer have better emission certifications (Euro5 for the 2.2). How much does a 2.2 costs and the engine swap costs? thanks

Can you do a step by step guide to rebuilding the engine from empty casing to first turnover? Including how to check and what to check tolerances, etc. going to be doing the same job and never attempted it before...
@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 8 жыл бұрын
+James Sawle (MD0MDI) empty casing? You mean stripped cylinder block? Yes that is what we are doing. I'll try to get in as much detail as possible but I can cover every single step.......just the important stuff.

I know that you are supposed to keep track of the position of pushrods when dismantling the head but should you do the same with followers if you are planning to re-use them?

To be honest I'm no mechanic I just have to get on with the jobs that need doing because moneys an issue at the moment. But like I said its a bad leak so it needs fixing I was gonna take it to a garage but it'll be pricy so I'm hoping the weather stays on my side and try to get some help off a friend and hopefully things go to plan. Thanks. Andy.

You really need to understand how to time up the engine and know how the timing belt is set to be successful. I would say it will cost you £150 estimate in parts to do a good job if your timing belt needs changing at the same time. $1.25 gets you access to the full 300tdi timing belt change video series. There is nearly enough information to get the rest of the job done if you use a workshop manual as help. Hello again we have managed to strip most of it down today all the pulleys and the injector pump are off so we just have to get the sump off now to get the housing off and replace the gasket and put it back together. I haven't long replaced the timing belt, push rods and a new rocker shaft with rockers because the belt snapped on me a couple of weeks ago but it was fixed and it was running fine before I spotted the leak so hopefully once its all timed up and back together it should be fine fingers crossed.

that flywheel housing is off a very early 2.25 from a series 2a, can tell from the cover for the timing mark, that would be on the fly wheel of such an engine.
@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 8 жыл бұрын
+Rangerover matt Okay thank you for clarifying that. . I had a 2.5NAD that had the flywheel timing pin at that position and with the 12 and 14 degree flywheel position marker inspection plate.
@mattyb120
@mattyb120 8 жыл бұрын
that's interesting, But I have a 2.25 thats about early 70s ish? that is still too young to have that kind of timing plate.

i don't think the design actually changed much until the block shape changed. Nice that everything was interchangeable. Not so much now though.

2.25 cam followers or lifters or whatever you want to call them, are the same in a 200tdi.

TF, when replacing the piston rings, how do you choose sizes? I see they have different sizing available. Just change like for like?
@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 8 жыл бұрын
+mightymikee They are makes standard or oversize. Oversize sizes should be etched onto the rings telling you which size they should be.

Hi there firstly thanks for your videos they have helped me a lot. Can I ask u a question its about my 300 TDI. I have quite a big oil leak coming from behind the cam pulley housing it looks like the gasket between the block and the housing. This looks to me like its gonna be a big and time consuming job have u got any tips? Thanks Andy.
@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 7 жыл бұрын
Yes it means stripping put the housing and replacing the gasket. Tips? Dunno what to advise really. Just be prepared for some work but if you are skilful you can have the FIP stay in place as it has a rear bracket to hold it to the block so you can undo the flange bolts connected to the casing.

hi l have santana 88 can 300 engine will work on it l like some speed please let me know thanks
@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 7 жыл бұрын
You want speed? Look at your gearing any reduction in gearing ei: transfer box ratios and final drive gearing plus tyre sizes. . Engines will only turn to a certain amount of RPM. Ashcroft transmissions has a gearing ratio calculator on it. Since you have a Santana then I can't comment any further because I do not have any data on those vehicles.
