Before Christmas, I got a package from Lacuna. It contains this small module that should be capable of transmitting sensor data to a LoRa satellite and last for a few months with this battery. After my last experience with FossaSat-1, I am skeptical. Do you want to accompany me on the journey?
We all were disappointed when FossaSat-1 did not work. I would have loved to transfer a LoRa message from a 20 dollar sensor node via satellite to my computer before the turn of the decade. FossaSat-1 showed that many problems have to be solved before we can transfer a message via satellite. But let’s have a quick look at who sent me this package.

I love how it combines all Maker passions - the hardware side, software ingenuity, radio wireless comms using digital protocols, and especially outer space tech - its a Maker tour de force. Even something like a dedicated repeater has to address having a receiving antenna and transmitting antenna operating in close physical proximity - those industrial grade repeater installations up on mountain tops are really something - now condense that concept down into a tiny, affordable LoRa gadget - couple to a solar panel and appropriate battery, a weather proof enclosure - then spread them across the land on rooftops like a modern day Johnny Appleseed planting apple trees across a continent

@@AndreasSpiess this is cutting edge at the moment, but all of the technologies involved are mature enough - this is the 21st C equivalent of Alexander Graham Bell putting extant components together to make something new from them. We can't yet dream of what they will be needed for, but tiny data from connected sensors is already becoming more widespread, and whether it is sheep counting in the remote Australian outback to drift experiments in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, someone somewhere will need it!

I was wondering about polarization of the signal. The antenna on the satellite suggests linear polarization (simple dipole). If this is true, then won't you experience an additional loss with mis-matched polarizations - or are you using a circular polarized antenna and accepting the loss? I looked on the fossasat page for electrical design info, but didn't see anything related to this.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 3 жыл бұрын
I accept the loss. A circular antenna would also not be the solution if the transmitter is linear.

Congrats Andreas!...pity FossaSat-1 wasnt planned well...but i guess something better will go up soon enough.. have you thought about using other sats (amature or defunct/pirated) to bounce your signals off?...i know it wont be LoRa..but it should already be possible...

I am not too much in satellites (I cannot mount antennas). I was interested in this particular topic because of LoRa's huge link budget which enables us to build cheap and small sensor nodes.

I’ve made comms links over 9 miles through dense urban environments using LoRaChat and arduino. It was over the amateur bands, allowing me a watt of power, but if someone was capable of writing software to store and repeat, these devices could be dropped anywhere. No mains power is even required. Imagine a single solar panel and board on top of a high mountain or hill, acting as a repeater!? Even using non ham band frequencies, it’s totally possible to create 300+ mile coverage zones that allow users to send a short burst of data, and have it repeated out. It’s possible to create a bluetooth and app connection, so people could carry a small box, connect it to their smart phone, and send a text out, have it repeated, and received over a massive area. All without the internet, the cellular grid, etc… Ham radio is hard focused on voice comms and computer to computer data xfer. Someone needs to start looking at the modern world, where short texts and data xfer is king

@Andreas Spiess the lora capable hamshield goes far beyond meshtastic. The only drawbacks are that it requires a ham radio license and has no store and repeat functionality. If it did, and was capable of running on the ism or gmrs bands, then some open source, license free, 2 way radio text only pager type devices could be distributed to the masses. Likely sparking extreme interest in the field

@pa Sorry, I did not read your comment properly and found now the LoRa Hamshield. As far as I see, it uses the same LoRa chip as all other boards (SX1276). So the HW is similar or the same as the 1W LoRa modules available on AliExpress. So the difference must be the SW.

At the higher ISM (900 vs. 433) frequencies, doppler shift will be a bigger issue, especially at lower apparent elevations when the path length is changing more rapidly. I wonder if the space segment receivers have any special tweaks to deal with this? I'm not familiar enough with the LoRa waveform/modulation envelope to know if it would be particular sensitive or tolerant of doppler shift. Thanks again for the very interesting video!

LoRa seems to be well suited for doppler effect related problems because of its chirp technology. And I know from Thomas that they worked with Semtech on this problem.

Hello @Andreas, There is also a french company/project name Kineis (www.kineis.com/en/how-it-works/) which will be based on a constellation of 25 satellites. 1st prototyppe sat has been launhed on Dec 18th 2019. It is a follow-up on the ARGOS system which is well known world wide for tracking boats and which is also use low power beacons. They also offer Kineis Adventure for tracking adventurers similar to SPOT system or PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).

There is also an article on the French Wikipedia (fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kineis) with little details on the satellites (cubes 20cm each side, 650km, UHF + VHF + S band antennas). Nothing clear on the exact frequencies used.

Andreas, great video and very exciting for you to receive a signal via sat! You mentioned fossasat you need an armature licence but for lacuna you do not. Is that because of the frequency used by both? Is 436 part of the HAM bandwidth but 866- is not? Greatly appreciate your videos

congrats to this success and big Milestone. Ca. 30 years ago I visited ZDF in Mainz and learned that they had to pay ca. 20 times more for terrestrical distribution of their TV Programm than for distribution via satellite. So, if you are in the right economy in scale, satellite distribution will be beneficial. Btw.: Will the TV stations reduce the fee, when the distribution is migrated to cable which is payed by the consumer himself?
@AndreasSpiess

I think, TV stations need every penny because their economy of scale implodes right now. Recently I was featured on the local TV and got one reaction outside "family and friends". So I assume nearly nobody was watching :-(
