I haven't read anyone else's comments... Can you do this test with NATO 7.62 x 51? I'd be interested to see that short barrel's numbers with the difference in ammo. The fireball may be different. Great comparison on this one, my old HK91A4 had a 20 inch polygonal bore and using NATO rounds it's muzzle velocity averaged about 2300. Thanks WTW!

Based on my experience with handloading and shooting the 308 Winchester for 30 years, the ideal barrel length for a rifle chambered for this cartridge seems to be 20 to 22 inches. With most 308 Winchester rounds loaded with bullets in the 150 to 180 grain weight range, there is not much significant gain in velocity when the barrel length is over 22 inches, and sometime the extreme spread in velocity increases with barrels longer than 22 inches. When the barrel length is below 20 inches, the velocity with most 150 to 180 grain bullet loads decrease noticeably. In most cases the amount of velocity lost becomes greater as the length of the barrel becomes shorter than 20 inches.

Dont forget that bolt actions will maintain a higher velocity with the same barrel length vs a semiautomatic. Reason is once the round goes past the gas port, pressure drops slightly.

@Ken Shackleton 20” barrel the 175gr SMK goes transonic at about 900m where are with a 24” barrel it goes transonic Alittle past 1000m the length of the barrel does impact performance at extreme ranges like that but under 1000m it doesn’t make that big of a difference. I was curious how the 3 different barrel lengths would register speeds. I think its a tough call with the 24 inch gas gun and the 22 inch bolt for the reason that some of the high pressure gas is diverted to operate the semi-auto action. I believe that's why they came out so close. The 12 inch barrel was actually faster that I would have thought. If possible a test in between a 22, a 16, and a 12 inch barrel would be cool because a lot of AR 10s have a 16 to 18 inch barrel. You did use what you have so cant knock that. Still very interesting!

If the 24 inch is including the muzzle brake in the length, it's effectively a 22 1/2 inch barrel. I had a 308 rifle with a 26 inch barrel, and the velocities were about 120 FPS higher than a 22 inch using 168 grain loads. With 180 grain slugs, the difference was 100 FPS. Heavier bullet has less powder to burn, hence less velocity loss in shorter barrels.

It makes sense that the super short barrel didn't see super low velocity since it's not a linear progression. Most of the acceleration happens early, so it's logical that most of the peak velocity will be achieved early in the shot. The acceleration curve would be very steep early on, and then would slope down quickly. The velocity curve would continue to increase for most of the bullet's travel through the barrel.

782,4 m/s (2567 ft /s) out of a 24' barrel? Sounds a little slow. I guess it is a matter of the ammo: the 7,62 x 51 Nato ammo has a velocity of 820 m/s (2690 ft/s) out of a standard G3 rifle.

Interesting video. I was also surprised that the 12.5" barrel performed as well as it did, but all the .308 needs is enough barrel length to allow for the combustion of most of its powder to get most of it's speed, and I guess that's 12.5". My .308's have 16.5" barrels, so I was disappointed that you didn't have one of that length, but given the closeness of the 22" & 24" barrels, I'd guess that an 16.5" barrel would average about 2387 fps.

It seems like for the average hunter/shooter muzzle velocity is overrated. Some people may disagree but for hunting or normal shoot around, the difference in velocity isn't that big of a deal. Many times it's just something to make people spend money on ammo or use for bragging rights. Sure, there are some times that it might play a role but not as much as people like to think. .308W ammo is loaded for 20-22" barrels by the factories because these are the most common.... to get best results one needs to load for the barrel length used..... a 26" barrel with slower powder will do much better and realise the full potential of the case. The powder in these commerical rounds will be too slow for the short barrel, about right for the middle ones, and too fast (especially with bullets over 150gr) in the longer barrel... So with proper loads the differences for barrel length will be greater because the longer barrels will really gain a lot from proper loads for their length.

@@jmkhenka That is a good point but it’s very rare that a lot of people hit a animal over 250 + yards so therefore why should it matter the velocity was not that great of a difference between a 24 inch barrel and a 12 1/2 inch so the impact should be the same at 250 - yards as taking long range shots with the 24 inch barrel But if you are shooting long range then I wouldn’t suggest a 9 mm or a 45 out of a 16 to 24 inch barrel At 250 to 500+ yards the projectile is not made to travel that far and you have the great velocity as a 308 6.5 Grendel .243 and 556 or .223 Sidenote I used to shoot 243‘s bold actions I heard this shit at the gun range and some other people why would they call it a ladies gun if it’s the same cartridge is a 308 nobody called a 308 ladies gun and on that thinking what a 556 or a 223 be considered a child’s gun?

@@jmkhenka Still significantly more powerful than either the .350Legend or 7.62x39. The .450Bushmaster is really close energywise, but then again it uses pretty much the same amount of powder, so i guess this is a waste as well... What 35-45cal do you have in mind? Even if you used a 150gr SP with godawful .35BCG1 and garbage velocity of 2250fps, it would remain above 2000fps for more than a 100yards. You would not use a .45cal at longer distances either, because those big bore ballistic coefficients are laughable... If you handloaded for the 308, you could use 190gr Nosler ABLR (.292G7) and easily push it @ 2200fps (well within even the low CIP pressure specs). This load would not fall below manufacturer stated expansion velocity until 740yards...

The velocity difference between the bolt gun and the ar may be due to the gas system and how the ar uses gas to load the next round. My 24inch bolt gun is right about 2600fps with 168gr

I many 308 rifles. Barrel lengths range from 16 inches to 32 inches. Many of my rifles have barrels from a custom barrel maker and they are chambered with my own reamer. Therefore they are about as identical as one could hope. When I chronograph barrels of the same length with the same ammo I find that the fastest rifle is about 150 ft./s faster than the slowest barrel. Therefore I conclude that if you compared a Winchester, a Ruger, and a Remington of the same length the differences in chambers and barrels could easily be 100 to 200 ft./s

My barrels come at a length of 33 inches and then I cut them back to the length I want. On one occasion I was curious about velocity loss so I shot the rifle in 1 inch increments as a shortened the barrel with a hacksaw on the tailgate of my truck. The 155 grain match ammo dropped about 35 ft./s per inch

Any semi auto gun that redirects gas to cycle the next round looses velocity. If you had a bolt gun with a 24 inch barrel it would be higher velocity than the semi auto.

The long barrel semi-auto is a bad comparison. Some expanding gas is lost in working the semi-auto mechanism so it gives a slower velocity than a bolt action of the same barrel length would.

Love your videos my man. I have to be that guy though. To compare bolt guns to a gas system semiauto is not a true test. Those bolt guns will always have better ballistics because there's no wasted energy or gas to blow back the bolt on the semi auto. Either do all bolts or all semi autos

The bullet has the greatest increase in velocity in the first inch of the barrel then the second most in the second inch, etc what this means is adding a few inches to an already long barrel isn't going to give you a proportional increase in velocity. What effects velocity is the time that force is placed on the bullet but the problem is the that same increase in velocity means that further down the barrel it will be exposed to the same force for less time per inch thus acceleration decreases as barrel length increases.

Years ago the LAPD or LACSO, I forget, wanted to know how short a 308 barrel could be before loosing significant velocity. So they fired & cut off 1" segments of the barrel at a time. They determined 16" was what they needed.

I just had the thought you would lose grip of the short one because no pistol brace/bump stock and a scope poking back at the recoil. Made me think of the lady holding a rifle with her head at the scope, like binoculars to the face... imagine that. Ouch, my eyes would cry, lol.
