You can speed up your swaging even more by putting a counter- sink steel bit in the drill chuck, and just holding the brass, about 3 revolutions does it. Just a trick a learned... Great video; very informative!

A couple tips. Lyman makes a primer pocket cleaner with a bevel cutter to chamfer the pocket mouth. It cleans the pocket and opens the mouth with proper chamfer and depth. $14. The best case lube ever is the Dillon Lube, 1 oz. of liquid lanolin in 12 oz. of isopropyl alcohol (ISO-Heet fuel line antifreeze, red bottle). Put it in a Dawn Power Foam spray bottle for a fine mist. Throw your brass in a gallon Zip Loc bag, give it 3-4 sprays and tumble. Slickest stuff ever and won’t effect powder and primers. I use it to turn 308 brass into 6.5 Creedmoor in one pass. One more thing, when setting over all cartridge length you want to leave the bullet at least .010” off the lands. With the bullet contacting the lands on firing it can cause pressures to spike.

Very interesting and most informative reloading video to date. I'm very new to reloading in fact just out of the box. I find some videos it's a case of look at me and how much I know. Yet you have broken this down, to be very precise and a simple step by step process, I have ruined some cases to date by not being able to follow the die set up. Once again you have made this so elementary to follow. Therefore time to replay your tutorial as I reload some 308 and load development ? Cheers from Scotland

You could save yourself a lot of time by getting a countersink bit and put that in the drill. They are about $5 at any hardware store and it removes the crimp just as well.
@barrychristensen3562 жыл бұрын
Great video overall however, you really should use a primer pocket reaming tool to clear the primer of the excessive brass.
@Glockster4211 жыл бұрын
If they are mil-spec or cases loaded with FMJ the primers may be crimped in. Go slow so you don't break the de-capping pin. Then ream out the primer pocket to remove the crimp.

First pull apart your die and remove the decapping pin, easy to do with a RCBS type die, if you can't remove it the primers gotta go. Use some WD40 and kill the primer. Lube the case and then screw the resizing die down a 1/4 turn and resize the case. Have the rifle with you and keep turning in the die until you can easily chamber a round. If you've killed the primer with WD40 make sure you clean and tumble the case to remove any residue.

I just started reloading 308's I collect brass from whomever and wherever. When I reload all powders are the same grain but I notice at times bullets will go stray from my intended target. Is this because I'm using all types of casing? I wonder if I should only use one type of brass when shooting precise shooting?

Hi, I'm new to reloading (just bout a bunch of gear but haven't used it yet). I want to get into precision shooting. In the video you said just resizing the neck may be better for that but you prefer to resize the entire case since you have multiple firearms in .308. So in the video did you only resize the neck? That part has my confused. Other than that I've loved your videos.

HI Thanks for the video! Could you please explain what you meant by "give it a flat spot" right before you run a case into the rifle chamber to get a custom over all length., sorry I'm just not getting it..

Just push in a small section of the case mouth to hold the bullet in place while you run it into the chamber. Think of a flat tire.

I just found your video for the first time however I'm going to look and see if you done anything on crimping a 308 Round And if not would you please do a video on how to crimp a 308 round using a RCBS press thank you? Also this is probably the best video I seen so far for a newbee that's just starting to reload ammo... I'm running my 308 ammo out of a AR-10 and I was told that you have to crimp the ammo to keep from pushing the bullet back into the case however I can't seem to find a video that shows you how to crimp 308 ammo...
@ScaleModelAlberta5 жыл бұрын
Jay Collins Hey man thanks. I’ve been shooting an M14 clone for 20 years and never crimped my bullets. Just screw in your seating die until it forms a crimp. Just remember to back off the seating depth to compensate for the difference. I’m home in a week from work and I’ll shoot some footage on die adjustments for crimping.
@dadajackyo11 жыл бұрын
It seems most folks making these videos leave the primer in during the tumbling process. Wouldn't it behoove you to remove the primer first so the pocket can be cleaned somewhat by the media? Thanks. I just got my first .308 yesterday and want to develop a nice, accurate, hunting load.

@ScaleModelAlberta9 жыл бұрын

@michaelmcw0910 жыл бұрын
Does your brass deform from the chuck of the drill?You must not be reloading for accurately?
@Glockster4210 жыл бұрын
If the chuck deformed the case I would not be using it. The only time the primer pocket is reamed is for Mil Spec crimped primers. Cases that have crimped primers only are for my M14 clone which is a 2 MOA rifle and the reloads are easily the equal to that. In a good bolt action these reloads are sub MOA rounds.
@MyREDTAIL8 жыл бұрын
I mostly use a File Trim Die & a File,? Been doing it this way for years,? And no problems,? As I do not load such a large bunch of Brass,? So the file Trim Die,? Serves my needs etc.? I just Invested in the Lyman EE Z Trimmer Hand Tool.? Going to give it a try also.?
@SitNSpinRecords7 жыл бұрын
MyREDTAIL the Lyman is great because it doesn't squeak. I get my wife to help deburr and remove crimps and re prime because we wind up with mounds of brass to process. My wife hates it when I'm sitting on the couch squeaking like a mouse while we watch tv.. Those hand held primers are great too. You can knock them out by the 100 pretty fast.

@nohandle25710 жыл бұрын
OK, so your trick to determine overall cartridge length by seating the bullet in the dummy round with the bolt action of the rifle gives you an absolute maximum length and no jump to the rifling for that particular rifle. No jump at all. Is it your belief that zero jump is the best for accuracy? Is there theory that a few thousandths jump might be better? Honest question. I just started reloading. Thanks.
@Glockster4210 жыл бұрын
Best to back off a couple thousand just in case. Tight to the lands could produce some unwanted nasty pressure spikes.

Glockster42, great vid! I've watched 3 times. I've just received my Lee cutting tool and can't thank you enough for the recommendation. I have a question regarding seating the bullet too much. I used my micrometer to measure factory bullet length. I then seated my bullet to the same; 2.073. Is it dangerous to over-seat? will it cause too much pressure?
@pchutton9 жыл бұрын
Or 2.733 (I think, I'm at work and can't remember what it is exactly)
@Glockster429 жыл бұрын
It could cause an over pressure if you are loading to near max loads. A good starting point is the COAL (cartridge over all length) as indicated in your reloading manual. Best accuracy is usually with the bullet seated a few thou off the lands or at least a long as your magazine box allows.
@pchutton9 жыл бұрын
Glockster42, I loaded 9 308 rounds with 44.7gn of Varget. My case was trimmed to 2.003. My COAL is 2.718. I am wondering if this is ok in my Rem700 SPS bull barrel.
@Glockster429 жыл бұрын
pchutton What weight bullet and manufacturer? As long as the bullet is not jammed into the lands and the load is within the parameters of a reloading manual, you should be okay.

It’s “one little dab will do ya”. It’s a reference to an old men’s hair care product from the ‘60’s. Brylcreams ads were, “One little dab will do” Jack Nicholson used the line in One Flew over the Cukoos nest when they were getting ready to give him electro shock therapy.

No offence, but if I recall correctly, the instructions I've read for resizing dies say "run the ram up all the way, screw the die in till it touches, then _back the ram off and turn the die in another eighth to a quarter turn_ before locking it in with the lock ring". Which adds up to what you did in two steps. Otherwise an excellent presentation.

If you are shooting your .308 ammo in a bolt action rifle you can neck size second time, if you are shooting them through a semi auto I only full length size.
