Can two smaller rounds beat their “parent” 308 Winchester? Shoot flatter, drift less, hit harder? Ballistics and long range tests test the theory.

@Otium Borealis All about killing ethically. If you are shooting at prong horn, or goats sometimes it pays to be able to reach out at longer distances. With game that size 7mm-08 or 260 Rem are perfect given the terrain could be more rugged. Rifles in those chambers are nice and light weight. If it's a matter of larger game, as always, bigger is better. Within that 200 yards though, you are absolutely correct. ANY .30, .28, or .26 caliber chambering would probably do fine on any North American game animal. Dead is dead no matter what the bore size is.

I'm a big fan really of all 3. I love the 7mm-08. To answer your question on why people select the .308, my answer: ammo accessibility. .308 can be found everywhere, where finding 7mm-08 and defiantly 260 is harder to regularly come by. All 3 will get the job done if the shooter does their part

In Australia the 260 is almost non existent and a 7mm-08 will run you $40-$50 a box. 308 you can get in a massive variety of loads and ranging from $20 a box on up.

Popularity of military rounds has always held true. For myself rather have the 7mm-08. Even the 6.5 Swede. I love the 06 and have had a few, it's a great all around round, hunt bear or varmints. Just I'm getting older and need a little less recoil.

I own both a 308 and a 7mm-08. Is the 7mm-08 shoot flatter and Cary more energy? Sure. But here's my opinion. 90% of deer hunters don't even need to shoot at a deer that's 200 yards or more. Much less 300. Out to any range a hunter should be shooting at, an animal want be able to tell what caliber it's hit by. I will say this however, I get more one shot drops, bigger exit holes, and better blood trails ( if not drt ) with my 308 than my 7mm-08. Ammo is also cheaper and more available where I'm from for the 308.

Jonathan Martin actually the 308 hits with more energy out to nearly 400yards per hornady high bc loads called the eldx 150grain vs 178 grain!!! I have and love both rounds but for normal hunting situations the 308 is hard to beat out to 400 or 500 yards!!! Now if I was shooting at longer distance I'd take the 7 08 for sure!!!

It is all about the bullet when hunting. The first deer I shot with a ,260 was under 100 yards. Went through both lungs. There were pieces of lung laying 5-6 feet away on the exit side. Factory Remington Corlokts. I doubt a .308 would do any more damage.

For an all around calibre, I have been a fan of 7mm-08 for years. I got hooked on it when I was in the Navy and had access to all the once fired 7.62 brass I wanted. I found the 7mm the most versatile in terms of bullet variation and ballistics. And the 7.62 brass can be necked down with a minimum of reaming and trimming. I liked the lighter recoil with the 7mm bullet and found it would do anything a .308 would do, plus with lighter bullets could perform on light game like coyotes and varments, yet I broke both shoulders of an elk with a single shot with a heavy bullet. If I didn't handload, I'd probably opt for the .308, but since I do, I find the 7mm-08 hard to beat.

I have hunted with those guns ever since. I'm old, crippled and can no longer hunt, but I wish I had either of the others instead of the 308 especially the 260; I would really like to have one of those even though most of my deer hunting was done with the 30-30.

liborko, that's a good question. I'm sure some wildcatters have made them, but no major manufacturer has ever made it official. It would, of course, be to the 270 Win. what the 308 Win. is to the 30-06. Short offspring. At this point, probably too similar to the 260 Rem. to be worth the effort.

Anthony Archer at 1 to 200 yards there is no benefit in trajectory with the other two and the 180g .308 is bigger heavier. Would you rather get punched by a 9 year old girl or a 30 year old man?
@johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe the point is .30-06. .308 is a cartridge that has issues in both directions. Can't throw the heavier bullets like .30-06 can and can't shoot as flat as smaller calibers based on the same cartridge case. And the truth is that .308 probably should be considered at its bullet weight limit at 168 grains. As a deer cartridge it's just fine with 150s.
@johnnorman7708

I think .260, 7-08. and .308 are all deer class cartridges that can be used on bigger stuff. It's the shooters responsibility to get it right. I think the .308 got shoved into roles it wasn't quite intended for.

@johnnorman7708 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikemellon80 I understand your sentiments and preferences well. I doubt a 180 from a .308 at 200 yards and closer is ever gonna have a problem with an elk. .300 Savage did it 30 years before we had .308 Winchester. But to be fair, 7mm-08 and .260 are both elk capable under the same conditions with proper bullets. Too many big animals already taken with similar power 6.5 mm and 7mm cartridges over the last century. Personally I would be using .270 Winchester or .30-06. No debate with whether those two can take an elk....

@@anthonyarcher7268 Not sure I totaIly follow your thought process. I do know some cartridges are so darned easy to shoot accurately due to flat trajectory and low recoil that you can make hits on game further than you should based on low residual bullet energy at extended ranges. Yes, both the 7-08 and .260 shoot higher BC bullets at faster speeds and flatter trajectories. Both were designed with the purpose of supplanting the .308 as long-range target rounds. All 3 have been used to win championships, first the .308 (replacing the then-champ 30-06), then the 7-08 and more recently the .260. Most recently, the 6.5 CM was designed specifically for the purpose of 1000-yard match shooting. I would, however, not use any of them for big game at any range beyond 500 yards. Most hunters want 2000 lb/ft ast the target, minimum 1500 for elk; most prefer 1000 lb/ft for deer. None of these rounds will reliably deliver that much power much beyond 500 yards, no matter which bullet you use. But they are all great shooters on 1000-yard ranges.

As a 7mm 08 fan, the 308 is a very good cartridge for out to 350 yards, I think the 7mm 08 because it has more retained energy out to 500, 600 yards, but I don’t thing a deer will really notice a 150 ft lb difference if ur hunting out to that far which I don’t really condone without being precise with any caliber. For example, a heart shot elk with a 308 will go down faster than a gut shot elk with a 300 win mag at 300 yards. But my point is the 308 is a good round for deer to elk with wide ammo availability. But if your about ballistic performance the 7mm 08 will do you well with the same game animals.

Love my .308's my wife and I have built. They are more on the tactical side of things. Built for 1000 yards. I have ELD M loads for 168 grain, 178 grain and 208 grain. I shoot the 208's lol. She does the 168's. Don't use my 178 load much. But I recently found out this was a necked down 308 and got intrigued. So I'm planning on getting one in a savage and making a 162 ELD M load for 1200+ yards. Hopefully its as accurate as my .308's. Tac drivers. I think that's one reason .308 is so popular. It's such an accurate cartridge. 5 shot groups touching at 100 yards. .5 MOA rifles or better up to 500-600 then thay are closer to 1 MOA. I have had sub MOA at 1k 2 times. I'm really hoping this 7mm-08 can do the same. I think it should do better with the ballistics of this 162 grain ELD M.

.260 Remington and 6.5 Creedmoor are also very close to each other. From what i've had people tell me is that if you're gonna shoot factory ammo go with 6.5 CM, if you're a reloader go with .260 Rem because it has more potential.

Yeah the Creedmoor is a lot more popular due to heavy marketing by Hornady. Remington really dropped the ball with the .260 and I hope it doesn't die off.

Yes, it's too bad Rem. PR wasn't more aggressive. The big ammo companies often seem to drop the ball on such things -- except Hornady these days. They really get after it. Innovative and aggressive. I like that.

when Remington was bought out by freedom group the quality took a hit. A have a couple of newer 700's that aren't great. The 7 mag had a short chamber. Had to have it reamed. Maybe freedom group is giving up on the 260. I heard Remington put out a 6.5 creedmoor in 2017.

I just bought a 6.5 Creed but I highly considered. 308 for the simple fact of cheaper and more prevalent ammo as well as aftermarket support. it's why I go with .223 versus 22-250 or 204 Ruger. all great rounds through some are just easier to work with. nice video

I learned many years ago that paper energy figures; kinetic energy of a "mass in motion" do not relate to actual performance on the terminal end where a bullet meets the meat! The .308 Winchester with a 165 grain bullet in the hunting fields at what we HUNTERS call reasonable ranges, works like magic on everything up to and including Elk and Moose. Yes, its true that the 7-08 and the 260 Rem. shoot flatter past 300 yards, but to a HUNTER, that isn't too interesting. This "long range kill" craze that has manifested in our hunting fields is wrongly and perhaps irresponsibly applied from the killing fields of war zones where war fighters who are charged with great responsibility to make kill shots at great and regardless of, great distances in order to save lives where such is rightly justified and used with the wisdom that it was rightly intended for. But somehow, bringing that same kind of "shooting" to the hunting fields degrades the "sport" and the intention of the traditions of "fair play" intended for the benefit of the animal hunted. "Too far, try to get closer, animal escaped..... try again tomorrow".... Bringing the War Fighter Snipers capabilities to kill enemies to the hunting fields isn't something that this trained sniper will ever do! I have to much respect for myself, my skills and my quarry, as well as the traditions of what HUNTING is all about to combine one with the other..... I also know that regardless what you see here on you tube of so-called successful extreme range shots, there are many, many wounded animals out there as a result of failed attempts to make these shots and any trained sniper will tell you that such is the case and it can be no other way in fact! Many of the shots shown are neck or head shots and experienced HUNTERS know what that means..... because experienced HUNTERS don't use those kinds of shots although a small amount of experts do from time to time under ideal conditions, but HUNTERS will always use a more sure target zone less likely to result in a wounded animal and it has been that way for decades..... until recently it appears. The great .308 Winchester isn't going anywhere. Like the .45 ACP, it will be with us long after all the hype of these long range darlings has faded into the background. A new generation of so-called hunters/shooters are being "educated", or some may come out of the next decade or two with some measure of guns smarts and hunting savey....... if they have paid attention to history.

The fact is that all these new calibers are trying to fix something that isn't broken. 30-06, .308 and .270 have been around for decades BECAUSE THEY WORK. Sure, you may get a few more FPS, less drop and more energy with the "latest and greatest" calibers but for the overwhelming majority of shooters and especially hunters it isn't going to matter

You are welcome, CaDelta. But, actually, the 7mm-08 outperforms the 308 at virtually all distance in drop and drift, but margins are so small as to be insignificant for most big game hunting. Hi Mike. For roe deer, musk deer, water deer, fallow and even red stags, you'll do fine with a 308 Win, 7mm-08 Rem., 6.5 Creedmoor, 270 Win. Lots of similar cartridges to choose. Your choice will probably depend as much on availability of local ammo as anything. Personally, I'd go with the 7mm-08 or 6.5 Creedmoor. The deer won't know the difference.

Always thought if your shooting 160gr and up is best to go 30cal and if your shooting 150 gr and below is best go for the 7mm and 6mm. Have shot game with the 7mm-08 and 308 always found they drop on the spot with the 308 most animals i shot with the 7mm tend to walk a bit one thar i shot at 200m took two 7mm 140gr remington core lokts in the right shoulder about 2 inch's apart and one in the left shoulder he then just walked off like nothing had happened. As for the bullet drop and wind drift i think it is irrelevant as if you are shooting past 200m you should know where your bullets will go by practising at the range. The thar did drop about 5 min later was lucky he didn't fall off the cliff he was standing beside. 30 cal and up for hunting for shooting steel/paper 7mm or 6mm but at the end of the day bullet construction and shot placement is king. I now shoot a 3006 and love it.

I once shot a 6x7 bull elk from about 150 yards with a 140-gr. Nosler Partition leaving muzzle at 2,849 fps. It collapsed instantly. Took a coyote broadside behind the legs through both lungs with a 180-gr. from 300 Win Mag. It ran 30 yards before expiring. The point is, we can't make guarantees based on a few incidents. Too many variables at play. Ultimately tissue destruction is what kills, not power or punch. Ask a bowhunter. So long as you like your rifle/cartridge and shoot it well, put right bullet in vital spot, you're golden.

If you want to shoot 308 Long Range, and have ANY chance of comparing ballistics, load a 175gr SMK or similar bc. And push it about 2650 fps and you'll see some very impressive results. But a 140gr 6.5 @ 2720 - 2800~fps will still be superior after about 600 yards.

The parent of the .308 is actually the 7x57. It was the first to use the .473 case head. The 30-06 is also the grandchild of the 7x57.
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good observations, Russell. Surprisingly, though, the 7x57 Mauser was not the first cartridge based on the .473" diameter rimless case. That was the 1888 Patrone or 8x57 J Mauser known as the 7.9x57mm J and later the 7.9x57 JS which enlarged bullet diameter from .318 to .323. Confusing? Yeah.) The original 8mm Patrone was adopted by the German military for its Gewehr 88 rifle, a Mannlicher later replaced by the Mauser 98. But the Germans stuck with the 8x57 JS. The 7x57 Mauser came along in 1892 and I believe the Spanish were the first to embrace it, to the chagrin of Teddy Roosevelt and U.S. forces in Cuba during the Spanish American War. That was the impetus to design both the 1903 Springfield rifle and 30-03, later 30-06, cartridges. The 30-06 is obviously a lengthened version of the 7x57 necked to hold .308" bullets. The 30-06 was then wildcatted and modified into many, many other centerfire rounds. Oddly, despite identical rim/head/body diameters, the 308 Win. was not created by shortening the 30-06, but by modifying the 300 Savage. But the 300 Savage, with its .473" rim, looks suspiciously close kin to the 30-06, doesn't it? It hit the streets in 1920, 14 years after the 30-06. Technically I guess we could consider the 308 Win the offspring of the 300 Savage via the 30-06 via the 7x57 via the 8x57.

With regards to many people wanting a .308 as a sniper rifle, I can't remember which KZfaqr said it, either Paul Harrell or Gunblue490 (I suspect the latter - although I could be WAY OFF BASE with either name 😬), but he said something to the effect that we don't know why the military went with the .308. It could have been for any variety of reasons. For all we know they could have been influenced by the use of our NATO allies (he wasn't saying this was the definitive reason). His point was it wasn't necessarily just the ballistics as there are better rounds for long range. Interesting statement. Paul Harrell and Gunblue490 I respect you both very much. Please forgive me if I misquoted or took it out of context. No disrespect intended.

In the 50s the military also made improvement in propellant so they could push the 7,62 nato as fast as the 30-06 they previously used. With the shorter action and improved propellant it was a win-win situation.

Right you are, David. The original military 150-gr. FMJ-BT ball load had MV 10 fps faster than the original 30-06, thanks in part to the 2,000 psi maximum average breech pressure allowed in the 308 (7.62x51 NATO.) Improved powders, of course, would increase MV of the 30-06, too. On average, figure a minimum 100 fps more MV from the -06 over the 308, often 200 fps.

Yankee, only range testing will absolutely reveal this, but as a general rule you can figure a 25 fps to 50 fps velocity loss for every inch of barrel lost. If your 308 Win. shoots a 150-grain 2,800 fps from a 22" barrel, figure 2,700 fps from a 20", 2,600 from an 18-inch, 2,550 from a 16.5". This can change somewhat depending on type of powder and its burning rate.
