When Sirakov, who was my idol at the time, scored in the 85th minute - there was a tremendous blast of joy... we all went out on our terraces shouting and smashing bottles down in the street. Crazy times. 😄

This was an okay Italian side caught between two great generations. You can see the world champions of 1982 players merging with players for 1990 as hosts. Italy were brilliant in both 1982 & in 1990. This was more of a building project as they were the Enzo Bearzot loyalists.

Gregorz Lato scored the last goal for Poland in 1974 beating Brazil 1-0 to get the third place for his country in that world cup. 4 years later Lato scored the first goal of Poland in the 1978 World Cup and he did it against Tunicia to give the victory for his Country 1-0 in that match

This brings very painful memories from the not so distant past. Starting with the early 80s, Bulgaria turned up a few waves of very talented players. Unfortunately, the communist overlords in the country did not allow for many of these players to develop their talents by banning them from transferring abroad; to play with better clubs. Thus the national team performances on international stage were more or less disastrous: - European Championship 1984: Bulgarian team had the most painful near-miss for qualifying - World Cup 1986: After some strong games against Yugoslavia and France, Bulgarian team qualified. Then after a rowdy final game between the country's two lead teams for the national cup in 1985, the communist morons disbanded the teams and totally wrecked the preparation of the national team, at the same time declaring that Bulgaria will do fantastic at the finals. Lucky draws with Italy and Korea, and humiliating losses to Argentina and Mexico revealed how badly the Bulgarian team had been prepared. - European Championship 1988: Bulgaria had to just draw the last game at home against a mediocre Scottish team to qualify, yet they LOST in front of rioting 70000 fans (I was there, and after the game cried like a baby similar to many other fans). After the communism ended in 1989, the second wave of talented players emigrated en masse to play in much better clubs throughout Europe. The results for the national team improved almost immediately: - World Cup 1994: Bulgaria qualified after beating in the last seconds the arrogant French team on their turf in the last qualifying game. FUCK YOU, FRENCHIES, WE ARE NOT FRANCOPHONES! During the finals, Bulgaria reached the semi-finals stage - the best achievement ever in country's football history, beating the strong German tram at the quarterfinals. - European Championship 1996: Bulgaria qualified - World Cup 1998: Bulgaria qualified
