La Torre di Prarola, eretta sulla roccia viva, domina il tratto di costa compreso tra San Lorenzo al Mare e Capo Berta. ed era in contatto visivo (per segnalazioni) con il campanile dell'oratorio di San Pietro a Porto Maurizio, da dove i segnali venivano ritrasmessi all'interno. L'epoca di edificazione della torre è da ricondurre agli anni 1562-1564; infatti, dopo una prima ondata di invasioni saracene, avvenute tra IX e X sec. ai danni delle coste liguri, il territorio, nel XVI sec., fu nuovamente soggetto a ripetuti attacchi da parte di pirati provenienti dal Nord Africa; specialmente dopo l'accordo tra la Repubblica di Genova (che possedeva Porto Maurizio) e l'Imperatore Carlo V di Spagna. La Repubblica di Genova, infatti, essendo alleata della Spagna, si trovò coinvolta nel conflitto franco-spagnolo, nel quale - nel 1535 - s’inserirono i Turchi a fianco dei Francesi. Numerosi furono, quindi, gli attacchi dei pirati al Ponente Ligure e all'entroterra di Porto Maurizio, in particolare negli anni 1561-1562. Subito dopo, perciò, la popolazione di Porto Maurizio chiese a Genova di poter costruire una fortezza munita di artiglieria. Nel 1564 la Torre risulta completata con un presidio di dodici soldati, un capitano e un bombardiere. Nei secoli successivi sono assai scarse le notizie sulla torre; se ne torna a parlare solo nel 1855 perchè viene dichiarata inagibile e poi trasferita dall'amministrazione militare al demanio nel 1862. Arroccato sul promontorio del Parasio, il centro storico di Porto Maurizio è un intricato groviglio di stradine e vicoli. Dall’alto dei suoi belvedere il borgo medievale offre un’ampia e magnifica vista sul golfo.

Immediately afterwards, therefore, the population of Porto Maurizio asked Genoa to be able to build a fortress equipped with artillery. In 1564 the Tower was completed with a garrison of twelve soldiers, a captain and a bombardier. In the following centuries there is very little information about the tower; it was only talked about again in 1855 because it was declared unusable and then transferred from the military administration to state property in 1862. Perched on the Parasio promontory, the historic center of Porto Maurizio is an intricate tangle of streets and alleys. From the top of its viewpoints the medieval village offers a wide and magnificent view of the gulf.
