Tips and Tricks On American Locks

This video provides some tips and tricks to single pin pick, gut, and reassemble American Locks.
This lock will teach you tension control with its serrated keypins, serrated driver, and serrated spool pins.
I recommend using an 0.018 thick hook to maximize feedback, however, 0.025 and even 0.030 hooks can be used as well. I do not recommend a 0.015 hook they are too think and reduce feedback.

Nicely done, you made that look easy. I have an old grimey 5200 that's a real challenge. So I rake it to a false set and spp from there.

I had been struggling to pick my American 1106 for a few weeks. Two minutes of your video, and I nearly got it picked. (I actually had picked it about 2 minutes after I picked my Assa Ruko 2, but didn't realise that it was so tough to turn the tensioner to release the shackle - I dropped my TOK tensioner! Got up this morning, watched your video again, and it is fully picked this time. Thank you, you really are a helpful lock picker...

Yep. I was impressed with my skill building in just a few days, then I ran into this wall of death. I even went out and bought another one thinking there must have been something wrong with the old one. Nope. I'm going to try again after watching this, though, so thank you for posting it! This lock is no joke for a beginner.

Tim Marrier joining the 1100 club is something to be proud of one you get it. What helped me a lot was I bought a bunch of them and never gave up. Some American Locks open right especially with poor bitting and poorly pinned drivers (spools over long keypins) I wish you luck!

Like many people, I tried and tried to pick these with a standard hook. But after the 32nd attempt I realized that it came with it's own specialized brass, zig-zag shapes pick that can open it in less than a second!

I have lots of ALs, mainly 1100 series, which are hard to source in the UK. So far I've only been able to pick one once and I have much to learn, but the process of gutting and reassembling is something I've done quite a bit for various locks. It is probably the bit I simultaneously enjoy the most and hate the most. My eyesight and fine motor control are both poor so it takes a while. When I get to the point of reinserting the core and re-locking it, it's always "argh, moment of truth, do I really want to do this if I can't re-pick it?". When I proceed, it snicks back into place and the intended key operates it again, that's such a sense of relief and achievement. I have done the expensive rattle thing before, I've dumped the keypins out of the access holes in the core before, and I'm sure I will do these things again.

I had the same problem as Tim I have 2 of these now that I can't pick. I think taking a couple of steps back and more practice on easier lock is the way. Great vid.

Peter, did you ever get it picked? I finally got the lamer counterpart to this LOTO lock, the Master 6835, and can now pick that one pretty much every time, but I'm still working on the American 1100. It's a bugger for sure, but I'm very optimistic given the sensitivity learning from the master, it really is all about careful single pin picking, staying in a consistent order method, and definitely being careful not to get frustrated even a little bit and over-setting pins. The opening springs are tricky too, I often grab my little straight screwdriver and bump it to see if it's actually open and make sure I don't wreck the little slots with the tension wrench. Tim Marrier i got myself a revolver and every time i get it round 360 degrees twice i re pin it always putting plenty of security pins in. First spin took over 1 hour now about 10 mins. It's taught me a lot. I will go back with more success i hope.

love the fact that most of you dont have the "drug" mood music or any other type. its interesting as you go from one topic to anther how the videos change. your all professionals in the lock picks but you could have better close ups. i understand you may not have the equipment for it. im trying to get involved with videos and lock-sport. i would like to meet the challenge!

SkeletonKey places like gearbest, and banggood sell them cheaply in a "lock disassembly kit". The shim stock is sold separately. I bought my follower set from CLK Supply and I am happy with it.

@11:30 soooo my first gut, and i just happen to have the same lock. I got it all back together, then wanted to repeat the process.... i made a mistake :D I spun the core around 180 degrees. So the pins came out the back side, no biggy. But the spring and driver pins are now acting as the lock, that stops me from spinning the core. Assuming i need to push all springs and drivers down at once, as i spin the core. Problem is i have no good tool for that, i am trying to use sewing needles....

Just used your advice to blast through my American Locks. I think my tension has been too high on a lot of things. Abus is another lock that needs very light tension my opinion.

Do Bump Key work on this lock? I was unsuccessful using one on American Lock Series 7

They technically do but it is very hard because of the pins

Great, HLP. I have an American 106 I'm getting nowhere with. I've just ordered a Peterson .050 pry bar. I'm told TOK tension is needed, but it's so difficult as they keep falling out Getting nowhere either with BOK and raking, rocking, or SPP.

Did by any chance you mean 1106? Did you try spraying lubricant into the lock? TOK is hard to use if it does not fit snugly but the 0.050 should solve that. also one thing to remember is some locks are just harder than others and you might just have one that is difficult, could have some broken Springs oh, you never know what is going on with the lock

@@HelpfulLockPicker Thanks for the reply H. Yes I did mean 1106. I'm doubting it needs lube or has broke springs, as it's brand new. But I will give it a squirt. I have a Peterson 0.050 coming. Just as an asie, I got a .040 TOK first but when I measure it on calipers, it's just 0.034 thick. Is that normal? Thanks again, and be well. :)

Hi again. I've finally cracked it, but I had to apply a lot more tension to actually open it. I'd picked it (and probably had before) without realizing it. It figures, as just using the key requires quite a bit of torque to turn it to open because of the spring tension. If that's the same with you, is it worth a note as a tip, do you think? feather light tension, thats something i never tried before, i also had issues with the TOK staying in.

sometimes you just need to buy or make one that is thicker. You want your TOK as snug as possible.

@@HelpfulLockPicker yes i have those, and the other set of thinner TOK bars from sparrows, the .050 don't fit well into my american lock 700's and are a little loose, its kinda good on my 1100 but not tight, very loose in my 40 series. i should invest in digital calipers and make sure they sent me the right sized TOK bars.

@@bird718 a lot of people like to make their own custom ones from music wire to ensure a tight fit another thing I like to do is I bought the z bar set from banggood and filed those into my own custom well-fitting one

im a beginer lock picker. i spent an hour last night on my first master padlock i had to shave down the edges on my shitty china tools to be able to get in open and when i got it open it gave me such great joy. do you know where i can buy a bunch of better tools? i allready ordered a vice and some see through practice locks but i kno that you cant really practice on those. i need to get my hands on a bunch of locks too

Where did you get that tensioner? Mine is too wide so it's hard to get it in at the top where the pins are like you're doing. It doesn't leave me enough room to move the pick around

E T it is the 0.050" thick top of keyway tensioner which you can get from Peterson or Sparrows

I couldn't pick this lock for 35 minutes. After watching you and hearing your tips I opened it in 2 minutes lol. Thanks Update. Cant pick it anymore. Bought 3 more, cant pick them either. Dont know what I'm doing wrong. I suspect its tention. My light tention my prybar falls out(top of keyway). My tention to get clicks like you get might be to heavy. Are your clicks that loud because of your mic?

Congrats on the open! I would recommend taking a few steps back though because you really want to get the basics down before you start working on those locks

Mine s getting hung up on the grove. for the c-clip. When I try to slide the plug back in, the first driver pin seems to raise and get stuck in the groove for the retention clip!!!

I'm more or less showed it that way because if you were to pick the lock and you don't have the key that wouldn't be much of an option unless you have a shim or something. There are other workarounds but whatever way works the best way to do it :-)
