Having been a scorer since 1984, this video will be about scoring whitetails and putting to bed many of the misconceptions of how it's done. This video will contain: what you need to score a set of antlers, walking you through scoring a typical 10 point rack, they are antlers, not horns, how to decipher on whether or not a buck in the field will net enough to make the Pope & Young record book, discussing and showing gross scores vs. net scores, looking at some medium sized racks to show how the typical scoring system works pertaining to out of symmetry measurements on corresponding points, circumferences and beam lengths, discussing non-typical points and how a non-typical rack is scored, discussing the solid deductions of non-typical points on a set of otherwise typical antlers and showing pictures of some of the bucks I've taken while discussing their strong or weak points pertaining to a net score.

I don't score my deer but I have to score this last one and a friend's by the request of the land owner. This video is great. Most of the videos don't show how to correctly measure point length. Great video John! I don't agree with deducting abnormal points. To me that is a flaw, but I get why they do it for record purposes.

I appreciate what he said at the end about shooting what makes you excited rather than over analyzing everything. I’ve gone three straight years without encountering anything over 90 inches yet I still get goosebumps when they come in just the same

I wish it was only 90in bucks making me shake like a leaf. Even if i have no intentions of shooting it, a small doe gets me excited as a 5 yr old on christmas morning haha. Youd think after 20 yrs of hunting id be ok by now but thats what keeps me comin back.

After watching this video I have to apology for speaking about abnormal points in two different ways. In a few segments I said it right and in other segments I said that abnormal points get added on to the gross score and then deducted back off. An abnormal point (non-typical point) goes into the abnormal point category and DOES NOT get added onto the gross score of a typical rack and then taken back off. All abnormal points get added together and deducted from the net score of the typical rack. Only when a rack has 12 5/8 inches or more of abnormal points do the abnormal points get added to the net score and then it would go into the non-typical rack category.

Mr. Eberhart I thoroughly enjoyed this video! It has enlightened me on a lot of the information about scoring antlers and I especially was thrilled about the narrow basket rack segment because I have seen several bucks in my area in SC that I have doubt would score even 100 inches that might actually be considered a P&Y scoring buck. Thank you for this video and wisdom that you have shared.

Big racks are awesome, but the real trophy is just a mature old buck, and they don't always have giant antlers. Those old bucks are almost like an entirely different animal in comparison to does and younger bucks.

Thank you Mr Eberhart great video like all the videos you put the time into. My question is what series is the Mannequin of the first 10 point you scored. I really like that hard left turn. @johnarnold2278
@johnarnold2278 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly why I'll never have any of my deer scored. Not having someone put a number that says its size. I didn't shoot the deer to have someone else tell how big it was. It made me happy at the time or I wouldn't have taken it. If someone is in to scoring thats fine,just not my cup of tea.

I 100% totally agree with you John, whatever makes the hunter happy, go for it. I had my first spike horn mounted and have him placed under my 180 incher and while I was hanging him in the store all the employees asked why the hell I was putting that little guy up on the wall with all the other big bucks and my answer was and still is, I was more excited when I took that spike (in the 1960's) than I was when I took any other buck on the wall. I hope I didn't come off as speaking down to anyone that kills anything they want, I've sucked so bad the past 3 seasons that I may shoot another spike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No biggie, I still have the antlers of the smallest buck I've ever shot but it was my first one. Still remember to this day replaying it in my mind. Some guys are numbers guys and thats fine. You didn't come off as arrogant or anything, it was a good video on scoring.

@@johnarnold2278 i feel ya. Kinda drives me crazy most of the time too. but not gonna lie its cool to see if you got a P&Y or a B&C deer. Record book deer is awesome to have on your wall and you never have to tell people what it scored. Just a personal goal. Just like weighing/measuring your fish. One thing i dont really get into is the net score for typical racks tho, haha it just makes me mad i dont know why. The character in a rack is the biggest thing for me. I love a cool lookin 125 better than a plain jane 140.

@@johnarnold2278 I agree as well. My favorite racks are definitely not my biggest ones, they are the ones with personality. I once took a buck that at the time I recovered him I was totally pissed about. I had seen him at a distance and he had a lot of bone and mass and I decided to try and rattle him in and take him. I rattler him in from across a small creek and when he was at 12 yards I arrowed him without looking at his antlers again. He was a busted up 9 point with 5 broken tines which would have made him a 14 point. Once mounted I thought, hell he looks pretty mean and I get a lot of comments on him because he is unique. I never get comments on my super typical 8's and 10's because hunters see those types of bucks all the time on TV or KZfaq or in ads and they are pretty boring. I also get a lot of comments on that massive 150 inch 10 point in the video as he is extremely unique and rare.
