Warning/Disclaimer: This is the specific process for my NanoVNA-H4, hardware version 4.2. I cannot vouch that this process will work for all units out there - proceed at your own risk. This video shows how to update the NanoVNA-H4 (H is similar) using .DFU firmware files and the Windows 10 DFuSE_Demo tool from ST. Table of Contents and links follow:

Hard to believe these little devices can be improved upon, Wow... Wish we had these 30 years ago along with Sim Smith. These tutorials are a huge help in keeping the knots off my head during an upgrade process.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I used this info to help update the firmware on my H model. Getting it into update mode is different and I had to have win-10 update the correct driver through windows update before it could see the nanovna, but in the end it worked.

Got it !! There's an actual STMicro Driver that popped up while i was doing a general Windows 10 upgrade, by clicking some sort of "Additional Upgrade Options" or some such option below the main Update screen.

Managed to upgrade my unit, but not so easy as it looked here. Thinking my unit was a bad copy, but probably just an early unit. That said I probably would not have made it at all without your guidance. I realy like all your wideos. You have a very straight and direct way of explaining things in an understandable fasion weather it is a use of a complex instrument or an electronic property.

excellent presentation. Upgraded from version 0.2 for 2019 to 1.0.39. 2020. I will try this version and perhaps change to a later version just to explore the difference. thanks for great video

For those struggling to get DfuSeDemo to recognise the NanoVNA-H in Windows 10. Connect NanoVNA to PC in DFU mode then find the driver "STM32 Bootloader" in device manager right click on it to select "update driver". Choose 'Browse my computer for drivers' and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\STMicroelectronics\Software\DfuSe v3.0.6\ (click on include sub-folders in the searching for drivers) then select 'let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer'. You'll see two options; ' STM Device in DFU Mode' and 'STM32 Bootloader' select 'STM Device in DFU Mode' to load this driver. In Device Manager you'll see 'STM Device in DFU Mode' instead of the 'STM32 Bootloader'. You'll find that DfuSeDemo will now recognise your NanoVNA-H. Or at least this worked for me.

@@PapasDino From what I understand, the nanoVNA can't be bricked, you just need to find the right firmware for it. It sounds like you may have loaded a version that is incompatible with your hardware.

@@Magikflame Not sure what you mean? I've tried returning to the original firmware and although the STM app says the operation was successful the Nano still won't start up.

@@PapasDino My mistake! I assumed entering DFU mode you connected two pins together, but it seems this update method is by holding the rocker down upon power on. Good luck and when you get it back up and running it would be great to hear what steps you took. 73 !

Not working on Windows 10 version 22H2 the DfuSe_Demo program due to device driver problem, but works OK with STM32CubeProgrammer and the firmware file in bin format and upgraded the firmware successfully.

Very useful video as always Alan. I just updated my SAA2N firmware, but using the win 10 program VNAQT.exe. The process is so much easier as it's all built into this VNA display software. No need for the ST DFuSE tool. Maybe it works for the H4 too? But you definitely have to recal the screen afterwards, and save!

Yes, the SAA2 is much easier with the firmware uploader built right into the PC software. I don't think this works for the H4 though.

@@w2aew There is also a simple python script in the SAA2 firmware source repository that just works fine there github.com/nanovna/NanoVNA-V2-firmware/blob/master/dfu.py, I've used it several time from a linux debian machine (and partially rewrote it actually :-) )

I wasn't able to enter DFUSE mode with the "off and press the button" method. When I plugged the unit into the USB cord it did not connect to the laptop.

Great and informative video again. What is a reliable source for a good NanoVNA (H4 or similar) when you hear about all the fakes and copies that are around? Some might work - more or less - but you never know what you get if you buy of of ebay or aliexpress or similar. I don't have a local shop nearby here in Germany and probably have to buy from ebay & Co. You probably have to avoid the extreme cheapies 😉

*NOTE: while I have used this process several times on my NanoVNA-H4, hardware version 4.2 - I can NOT guarantee that it will work for YOU! There are a LOT of different hardware versions and clones out there that may behave differently. I apologize if it doesn't work for you, and please proceed at your own risk!* Note that the -H and -H4 versions use different firmware! If it doesn't work for you, the message boards on the groups.io NanoVNA-users group have lot of threads that offer help.

Here's another point to make sure you double check before updating - make sure you have the H4 version and not the simple H version...that's the mistake I made initially, fortunately once I had the correct version my seemingly "bricked" Nano came back to life when I uploaded the correct firmware. Both versions show up in the DisLord folder when you unzip it so be careful.

did everything you said, windows, without my permission did a big "upgrade" 2 days ago, won't even see the nano vna. I have identical one to yours, device manager also won't find driver for it. Any idea's?

Alan, just tried this update today on my NanoVNA-H 4 like yours and it went in fine but I had the documented problem attaching to the Windows Nano VNA program. I went back to put the original version in but my Nano wouldn't go into the DFU load mode. Holding the rocker switch down and turning it on with the Dislord 1.0.39 version messed up something with that process. I had to open it up and jumper the two boot pins on the board and then I was able to reload first version of the firmware. Just thought I would mention this should others also have this problem. 73, n2cmd Brian

Uh Oh. When I completed the DFU upload to my NanoVNA-H4 all I get now is a black screen. If I turn it off it does not show anything on the screen.

Alas, this did not work on my computer (Windows 10 21H1 64 bit). DFUse Demo did not see my NanoVNA-H4. I had to use the newer STM32CubeProgrammer instead. Perhaps it's time for a video on that...

Hi Alan, as you have said, there are a number of clone devices on the market. Which is the best source for devices that work? I have just returned my h-4 as it did not provide stable readings - the longer the device was on the higher the readings went.Regards Stan

As i write this 2 years later, the STM32 bootloader no longer works in Windows 10 and Windows 11. So, you won't be able to upgrade the firmware with this instruction video anymore.

Do you know where the sources for the 1.0.39 version can be found? GitHub only seems to be at 1.0.38 which doesn't have the 401p modification, at least on the -H...

We are up to V69 now. My device does not show up in the DFuse Available DFU Devices box. I'm not sure why not as I did everything according to instruction. The screen went black indicating in DFU mode. I did hear the detected ding when I plugged it in but no joy on the screen. None of the boxes were populated with any info.

I've tried swapping cords. Nothing is bringing that H4 up on the screen boxes. USB dings, meaning detected but that's it.

@@w2aew It looks like your current version (1.0.39) now samples 401 points instead of 101 points. Are screen updates slower because of more points? I don't own a NanoVNA (yet).

@@stevebailey1682 There were some updates to the sweep speed, so it was about a wash as I recall. I might update to the latest DiSlord version (1.0.69).

I have the exact version you have, followed all the instructions, it looks like it works just like in your video, but when I power the nano back on, it still says 0.5.0.

It connects to the PC (Win 10), but will not show up in the update utility for some reason.

I am using Windows 11. I had the same issue. Went into device manager and saw that it didn't have a driver for the STM device loaded. Told it to scan, (not found), told it to go to Windows update, then clicked to show Optional Updates. The STM driver was listed there. Installed it and the firmware update worked as expected.

I have heard that this particular firmware causes issued connecting to NanoVNA Saver. But, I don't generally use the PC software, so I can't comment on this directly. You can always reload the old firmware if you have a problem.

It sounds like you may have tried to upload firmware that is not compatible with your hardware. You'll need to find the right firmware for your device.

Interesting video, Unfortunately in my case no help. I have the H4, but can not even access the menu, I can get it on the screen but other than that, . That's right nothing, not even trying the wheel control.

Sounds like your touch screen calibration is incorrect. Easy to fix, but you'll have to use the jog-wheel to get to the correct menu.

@@w2aew Further to my problem I took the golden screwdriver to the back and slackened the off. That would appear to have solved the problem. Maybe something to do with pressure on the touch screen. Could be a idea for another how to. keep up the good work. best 73 2E0HXU aka KG4UXR

Doesn't work. I have identical Nano vna as this video, downloaded and all it does won't allow me to upgrade- greyed out. 3 times I downloaded, 3 times I uninstalled. that groups link also doesn't work. Oh well, my factory fitted nano van works fine as it is.

The website: nanorfe dot com/nanovna-v2.html claims that they are the "Official" maker of NanoVNA V2. They claim that there a LOT of clones out there that may not work correctly or may not meet performance specs. Does anyone know of a link to a reliable source for the latest "official" NanoVNA?
