Thanks a million! My son removed a bad battery and shut the trunk when he left to get a replacement. The jump method wouldn't work. This is a crazy design by BMW. I probably would have shut the trunk also without suspecting that it would cause a big problem.

After watching hours of useless youtube videos i finally opened the trunk of my BMW 335D (Without Battery) !!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!! LEGEND!!!!!

THIS WORKS! Today I managed to lock my keys in the trunk after loading my groceries in the store parking lot… Called BMW but they told me I need a key replacement for my 2008 e92 328i coupe which could take days. Luckily my house was 15 minutes away from the parking lot, so I got myself a screwdriver and a butter knife (in case the screwdriver wasn’t long enough). The tip is to remove both of the lights along with the handle. Also, after unhinging the knobs on the white plastic part and lifting it to see the cable, reach for the cable from the hole on the right while looking at it from the center. It took me sometime to get the hang of it, but it works so just keep yanking on the cable to the left. Thanks man, awesome video!

One of most helpful videos ever. I used it last year when I bought a car with a blown BST cable and a closed trunk. Today I came across the same scenario on a different car but with a blown BST cable and closed trunk. I had to dig again for the “spine” cable through the hole and pull on it using a long screw driver. It worked! Again! Thanks a bunch!

I've seen another video on YT where you can remove one of the licence plate lights, then remove the bulb, then connect a 12v source (spare battery etc)to the positive and negative bulb holder terminals, then press the boot open on your key fob. Essentially you are putting voltage onto the loom that includes the boot open latch. Haven't tried it, but it's worth a try.

I just want to say thanks. Just disconnected the battery before starting a starter replacement process and ended up having no access to the battery afterwards. This is the easiest way without damaging anything . Thanks again Sir. Forget about everything else. This is the ONLY way.

This was my last resort to be able to get in my trunk before breaking in with a halligan or axe. Could not power the car from under the hood due to “explosion” of the battery safety terminal cable at the battery. Key inserted in the key slot at the trunk did not work either. Did the exact same thing after watching the vid. Worked great. Thanks a bunch for taking the time to post this!!

Dude your a lifesaver. I disconnected my battery to go buy a new one but I closed the trunk. I tried to pass current from the posts up front and then to remove the back seats but it was the same as yours.

Beware of damaging the piece of the trunk where the license plate lights clip in. The screwdriver bent the metal and I don’t think I can get the light to fit properly in its slot anymore. Looks terrible, and still didn’t manage to get the trunk open. Probably user error, but man this did not work. Would recommend trying a forum post hotwiring the solenoid that unlocks the trunk. Seems like a safer option.

This worked for my 2011 328i (e92). No way to get through back seats. I had disconnected battery to do repair and locked the trunk. Using booster was not an option because directions said that using booster with battery disconnected would damage electronics. So i found this video that is no where else. I was a bit confused by the video though. That white bracket had tabs on the top and bottom of the bracket but the video only showed top tabs. Anyway i popped off all the tabs. Then on the left side, i pushed that side of the bracket up … then i could see the ribbed cord that looks like a ribbed flat black cord. Then I realized that the poster had removed the truck latch and also the license plate light. So I removed the left one. Then I was able pull the cord to the left using a long screw driver. Then the trunk opened. Praising the Lord ✝️🙏🏾

Do you not have electronic trunk release? Wonder if those would work on the same principle? It would be helpful if you could tell how you popped out the license plate lamps and the trunk handle opener. I now know the trunk handle removed by just using some trim tools to kind of pull it out by the edges. So looking at the license plate lights, you will notice on the left there's a slot. Put a screwdriver into that slot and force the light to the right about 3/8 of an inch. Then use the trim tool and the light should just fall out. I still cannot tell which way you are pushing the cover's tabs. I don't know if you're pushing them up to release them or pushing them pulling them down or what the heck. I'd be help if you could be a lot more specific on that in your description. So after accomplishing this I thought I had a few notes. The top four tabs are the tabs that need to be knocked into the cavity between the mounting surface and the trunk liner. Once the cover is entirely within the cavity it is mattered on the center post so it will rotate counterclockwise. In this case it exposed in my trunk a corrugated cable. On one of my trim tools I had a u-shaped cutout which I used to move the cable towards the passenger side. I did not hear the lock trip at all and was amazed when the Trump just went up when I pushed it.
