32x32 pixel LED display panel made from 4 x MAX7219 modules of 32x8 LEDs

I wanted to make a large LED display for a special effects panel to hang on the wall, so I made one from some of those cheap 32x8 LED modules and an Arduino. The panels use MAX7219 chips, so are really a breakout board for that chip, plus 4 lots of 8x8 led displays. The key is to put semi-transparent perspex over it to increase contrast.

Nice project. I liked the falling balls animation. I wish I knew about those LED modules when I built my LED Marquee nine years ago. It would have saved me a lot of soldering.

That's a nice, large display. Easy to make too. You're right, it looks much better with the tinted perspex cover. I think I'll make one. Thanks :)

Nice! I'm also doing a 32x32 LED panel display for a breadboard project with a custom display control board. This gives me a really good idea of what it would look like. I hadn't even considered placing a tinted panel in front to help with the contrast.

Without improving contrast I found it was very poor. A little perspex goes a long way!

@@CircuitBreaker256 My project will be using the 'raw light panels'. I'm curious to see what kind of brightness range I can do with it. (Likely 4 levels using 2 bits). I would worry a little how much a tinted panel would dim things even further.

@@Jimfoxyboy If you try it I think you will like it. It's really a contrast-enhancer.

Also the second randomizing algorithm looks a lot like particles :D Good job, particle physics in a 32x32 LED block. (I sound ironical but I actually find this absolutely amazing :D )

Ah, you spotted that! Yes, it is a particle system. I was going to do a video just on particle systems because I love them so much.

as we are talking about 1 bit per pixel, I'm quite sure the UNO can handle the timing for outputting the pixels, but what I would be more concerned (like you actually mentioned) would be the power draw - it was one of the revelation for me that when driving led displays you need to actually have quite a lot of power to drive a bunch of them

That's true if you drive them on permanently, but the MAX chip on these modules can drive them with PWM, so it can vary the pixel brightness. At full brightness you can only have about 100 leds on before the UNO gives up, but at lower brightness it works well.

Man I spam the comments now, but anyhow, good idea on a retro game project stuff, and I was just thinking some multicolor leds in that 8x8 configuration would be nice - retro game systems usually had 8x8 tilemaps for sprite and background data so why not embrace it :D

Hello I love this it's so cool 👌. what black plastic name is don't matter? And if I want conect more modules for eg: 48x32 it's possible? and you can share schematic please, thanks

This would look great behind the front mesh of my thermal take cube case. Is there any where I can find a tutorial for this? I’d like to make it look like a CM-2.

You are right, I should make the code available. I have a ton of Arduino projects with the code locked up on my laptop. I should share it. I'll see what I can do about it. Thanks for the suggestion.
