Vinyl was the start of the journey for DjRUM. This mastermind on the decks and dedicated digger is a formidable force in the booth and a powerhouse producer. Known for bending genres and taking audiences on eclectic journeys through differing tempos and sonic surprises, he was a natural choice for our next 33:45 crate-digging feature. For this edition, we joined DjRUM at his home studio in Oxford to explore technique, scratching, looping and we took a deep dive through his Jazz, Dubstep, and Jungle collection.
DjRUM joins Goldie, A Guy Called Gerald, Mantra, Source Direct, NEFFA-T and more on Friday 14th July. ra.co/events/1719099

I was stagemanager at one of his gigs in the Netherlands and it was fking jaw dropping. I could not believe what I saw and I distinctly remember all the other DJ's at that show being in AWE of his skills on the decks, the layering, the scratching and the live beat cutting (taking two breakbeats and cutting between them to make something completely new). He's just unmatched

What makes DjRum so special? Huge musical knowledge and in my opinion a continuation of the sound of the 90s in a new version (jungle, breacore, dnb, dub, broken beats, 2step, click n cuts, big beat, ambient techno, idm, glitch ... etcetera). The 80's generation feels right at home. Chapeau bas!

I used to do exactly the same thing and spend hours in those 50p sections of Vinyl Exchange. I remember picking up Ho on Dizzee's Dirtee Stank label (from the Notting Hill one) - think that definitely goes for more than 50p these days! It got to the point where I picked up one of those portable Vestax record players - game changer for digging in the bargain bins! I think I got a good 1/3 of my techno vinyl collection back in the day thanks to those sections.

I wasn’t born early enough to get into vinyl and digging for records in the way that DjRUM is talking about and it’s such a nostalgic feeling even though I never experienced it back in the 90s and 00s. This is so inspirational for so many reasons. Digital may never be the same thing that vinyl is, but keeping the spirit and the soul of this kind of DJing alive in the digital is what I hope to do in my own music.

never too late to get into digging. it's not the same as it was then but the thrill of finding a diamond in the rough, taking it home and listening, sampling it and making something new, never gets old. tangible media has a certain magic (and im not just talking about indistinguishable sound quality differences)

It's amazing too see him further explain the use of the Ofra Haza record. Blew me away when he played it in the London-Bridge set... I found this record in my dad's record collection a few years ago and made jungle tune out of it myself. suchhh a haunting vocal. Was amazing to hear him use that

Seeing him next Saturday for like the 5th time. I'm excited to see what mad sounds and techniques he will bring every time. Seen Djrum rock festival stages, small, dark basements, Fabric. He has insane chops and confidence in manipulating his material in a precise yet rough way that's so satisfying.
