Excellent videos, I didn't know about the concept of never stand up when someone is behind in a rear bodylock that's very important to know
@josephbreza-grappling9459
@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I actually had to tell my BJJ instructor why that’s a terrible decision. In Freestyle, I would suplex the crap out of people from the back. You can do it from the side bodylock too, but the side bodylock has issues in that the opponent has offense from there too (I have several videos on that). If someone stands up on you, there is definitely a lot of threat. Stand up on a crazy whitebelt wrestler with freestyle or greco experience and you might get your neck broken. You have absolutely zero advantage to standing up without hand control. Two things that I want BJJ people to learn from wrestling is how to escape with proper hand control and how to properly mat return. Because the current “fetish” in this sport is to get to someone’s back from the standing position, but the mat return skills need a lot of work before that is a useful endeavor.

Coming here from the B-Team talking about your channel. Would you recommend finishing the granby? Or would you consider just going to a half granby to recover guard? Seems like there is a lot of arm exposure if you stop it half way.

That’s cool man! I am grateful for those guys dropping that line. They didn’t have to do that. They are building people up instead of tearing them down. That is a fantastic way of doing things I like doing the Granby to get to a position where I put them in trouble from side control or face them and take them down. I am not much of a full guard player or triangle guy, so the half granby to the triangle or full guard just isn’t my game. But I have been caught with triangles off of that when I didn’t respect it. I think that is what makes Jiu Jitsu so cool. You can get into this sort of easy going roll and then oh shit, lol!

You make a really good point about the position you land in. People complain its not a good position. But that's not what's important, what's important is, are you in a better position than you were. Also I really want to go to Granby camp

Yes, I get that all the time from people. I tell them to hari goshi, sagging headlock, or uchi mata when that guy gets a side bodylock on you and they always say, “yeah but he will try to take your back when you get to the ground.” Well, he was almost to my back from the side bodylock you moron. Same thing if someone gets an over under and I inside trip. “Oh, but now you’ll end up in his guard.” Better than being in his mount you frickin moron. In wrestling, we don’t limit the takedowns we do based on whether they will give us the optimal position. You do what you need to do to get it done. If you think that way, you will lose. You have to use what’s available and move on from there. If I just get away with a granby, I have accomplished what I needed to accomplish, which was to get the hell out of there. Granby camp is the shit

@@josephbreza-grappling9459 it very much feels like an "Letting perfect be the enemy of good" situation. Im just a white belt but it seems to be as you rightly point out if we wait for the perfect time to get where we want to in one go we are going to miss lots off opportunities to put ourselves in a better positions. Id rather be in half guard than side control. Id rather be in guard than in mount, id rather be in side control with one butterfly hook in than in side control with nothing. Same with guard passes. Sure a knee cut might end with you being in quater guard. But Its a huge improvement on being in full guard of half guard. Thanks for your vids btw, always some great perspectives I dont see elsewhere as often.

Absolutely man!! Because there is the entire mental side of this too!! If I make incremental improvements on my position, then you feel yourself losing position over and over. A giant part of the game is mental where you don’t “worry” about what he has but assess it and do what you need to do. That doesn’t always come with time. I have coached many exceptional wrestlers who’s biggest battle is theirselves. They have these expectations of what they want and that’s very far from reality. You just need to be in the moment. It took me a very long time not to treat practice like a competition. But with time, age, and deliberate practice, I was able to just see practice as opportunities to learn and to let OTHERS LEARN! That’s when I truly started to love grappling, because I wasn’t judging myself all the time

coach hi just wanted to mention that your videos are eye opening, for me the single to bodylock , im quite small compared to my training partners and they have told me that as much as i like takedowns, bodylocks and trips would be better for me and because i tried that waist grab multiple times and just got shoved down , if thats truee i wanted to know if you could talk about chain wrestling and how to get the body lock but with a more mma approach taking chokes and strikes in mind, if not other way pure wrestling is still great just wanna know how to do it properlyy, thanks for the great videos, its hard to find people that teach classic wrestling to this level of detail!!!

Yes, that’s the finish from there when my arm makes it to the outside (When I clear the space on the granby). I wouldn’t want my back facing him for long, because I would worry about him trying to re-establish back control. In college, I never tried to hold them there long, because they will completely flip out and try to rip your face off with the other hand as they bridge and shrimp. So, I would bail out towards the legs (never towards the head) and take the reversal

@@counterkidnapping1737 thanks for commenting! The reason I’d go with a front headlock to the back is that it doesn’t require anything from him really. If he is pushing, I can snap him down into a front headlock. I have more control then from an overhook or armdrag. The drag doesn’t work well on people who are backing away. You can force a front headlock if you have to, but you can’t force the drag very well. The drag works well if they are pushing, but like I showed in my armdrag video, you can go around and around in circles if you don’t do it the Greco way (in the traditional way, you have the same move-both can drag). Also, having to deal with the front headlock is horribly exhausting. If you don’t get it the first time, you can keep going back to it and wear people out. You’ll eventually get it and are expending little energy while he is really having to do a ton of work. There’s also little offense for him other than the drag. As long as I keep my elbow high (the one that’s controlling the chin) and control is far elbow. He’s gonna pay for it down there. I’ll post that video soon next week!

Well, we will fix that!! The beauty of Andy Seras’s system is that you can take a beginner and turn him into a champion. Back when he ran Atlas wrestling club, we (a few of us college guys) would help out and work with high school and middle school kids at the club. Seras and Reardon (my head coach) produced numerous high level wrestlers from teaching this system. Many had zero experience when they started and within a few years won the state tournament and qualified for Nationals. I helped coach the national team for several years. Coaching kids is really what makes you develop good systems, because you have to use techniques that will work when people are tired, slippery, and need to score to win. Andy’s systems are all about gaining control, so that wherever he moves, he puts himself into trouble

Can you give insight into how this might translate to MMA, where gloves may make it harder to keep locked hands? In MMA, I see a lot of rear body lock grips broken from a standing position with "summersault" style granby rolls (Izzy and Ferguson are examples of the top of my head). Do MMA gloves make it harder to maintain that bodylock grip? I see a lot of fighters stand up from turtle to defend a rear bodylock with the strategy of hand-fighting to break grips (Derek Lewis is the obvious "Just stand up" example). In the Khabib vs Trujillo fight, Trujillo escaped some bodylocks with granbys but got other granbys stuffed. I didn't see Trujillo try to fight grips with Khabib, only granby. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Love the content and channel! Please keep it up!

Granby is the best option to break the grip when the rule set doesn’t make you (you can’t lock hands from that position in scholastic wrestling). I show this on my Granby video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mZiZjdOmlq3dZqc.html I am not doing it from a standing position, but the same concept applies. He has to let go or he will faceplant or break his shoulder (if done correctly). I don’t wear the gloves and don’t like to comment on things I am not an expert on, because there are enough bozos out there doing that-like BJJ coaches who teach wrestling but have never wrestled a match in their life. However, will say this, my grip a one handed over grip on my hand and I would think I might have a better grasp here with a small glove than without. But then again, I could totally be wrong and am fine with that. It’s like wrestling with and without shoes on. If you never have wrestled without shoes on, then you don’t know how some classic wrestling positions just don’t work.
