I lived in Iluka in the early 2000s. Beautiful place. Great fishing spot too. A yacht that style will draw at least 1.5 if not more. I have full keel that draws 2.0 and with the swell that reef wouldn't be forgiving let alone forgotten... He got lucky

That yacht was lucky...I had my heart in my mouth looking at it taking a short cut over the reef...

Working for Billy west on his trawler, he crossed the bar from the south side on a largish day. Broached coming down a wave and nearly went over. I was on the port side near the rear of the sorting tray, as she broached I put my arm through a hole in the sorting tray. The next thing I knew I was underwater the only thing keeping me aboard was my arm through the sorting tray. Thanks Billy.

Billy did everything @ 150% , fear was not in his vocabulary.

@@unclemarkyeatonshill5803 if I hadn't got my arm through the sorting tray I would have gone over the side and drowned. Full wet gear and Welly boots "no" lifejacket. He may be 150% but when I went into the wheelhouse billy was white as a sheet and shaking like a leaf. In 16 years of fishing it was the closest I came to death, worse than being on the Dragin 2 when she sank on the jumpinpin bar 23 December 83.

@@unclemarkyeatonshill5803 sorry but I don't recall. I was only filling in for his permanent decky for a few days. I also worked for his father for a while. You said billy was, is he no longer with us?

Watched a trawler break it’s back in the seventies it can be treacherous due to shallow waters

It’s actually not so bad as far as bar entrances go, we went though it at slack water and it was fine, it looks worse than it is .

I came in on the rising tide but with 20kt SE & swell. It is horrible in those conditions as you have to turn side on to the swell. There is a photo in the pub on the hill of a friend in their 40' yacht who came in under same conditions & took on water. I went out on the ebb tide just after the high. That was OK. There was no swell.

Hey I just saw that you've got the Ophelia up for sale on boatsonline - shame to see her go up for sale. Are you changing to a different boat or hanging up the gloves ?

Noticed that myself.

I have family in Melbourne who after 8yrs want me back. I could sail her back to Melb. but decided to try & sell her in QLD & start a new life. I have been very lucky to circumnavigate Aust. so perhaps it is time to move on. If I don't sell, I will take her back south & spend some time around Tassie (closer to home). I did circumnavigate Tassie & loved it.

@@sailingopheliacompass2997 Thanks for the content. It's good to see someone like yourself cruising as many of us dream and plan for when it is our turn. All the best and welcome back anytime.

I was on the trawler tempest for a few years & crossed that bar almost daily , I don’t know what your point is here , that yacht was never in trouble ! Trouble was getting the trawler windows punched in & the radar taken off the roof !
