Welcome to Tala Talks NICU! In this video, we talk about late preterm infants (those born between 34 and 37 weeks gestation) and the 8 main reasons a late preterm infant would need admission to the NICU.

@@TalaTalksNICU They are indeed strong and resilient! My son was born at 35 weeks. I had a scheduled c-section for 38 weeks, but he came earlier. I read the most popular baby books, but was totally unprepared for a late preterm baby. I didn't even know it was a thing. It was very stressful cramming info from his brilliant nicu nurse after he was already born. The hardest part at home was getting him to drink the amount he was suppose to at each feeding. And if he didn't, making it up at the next feeding. He was so sleepy and drinking exhausted him. After about 2 weeks, it was no longer such an issue, but it was a loooong two weeks. Lot of doctors appointment to check his weight too. He is now 7 and not different from any other 7 year old. That's the most important. It's great that your videos exist for moms and soon-to-be moms to reference.

I'm so glad he's doing so well now- obviously since you have been a superb mother to him- then and now! I don't think we emphasize this enough in the NICU when babies are going home, that there are still going to be some tough times and patience-testing times ahead. Thank you so much for this informational video. Currently 31 weeks pregnant with twins, with one exhibiting IUGR, so I have been told that they will likely have to come out at 34 weeks. This information was helpful in understanding what medical needs they may have when born.

Dr. Tala you are truly a Godsend! Your videos have educated me so much on my baby born at 31 weeks. I had DKA and she needed to be stabilized. Scary, but she just turned 35 weeks and sleeps through her feeds (began at 34 weeks). The most she's taken orally is 5ml, but typically she doesn't feed. Why is she so sleepy? Is there a way I can help her feed more?

Hello Tyeshia! Congratulations on your baby (and well done for getting so far along - that must have been a stressful pregnancy). This really is an educational channel- and we could get into trouble for dispensing medical advice so I will be very general! Infants start to have the strength and stamina and coordination to start taking oral feeds at 33-35 weeks. This is just the beginning- and then they need to build from there. Part of that development includes having the energy to wake up (and cry) for feeds. For reasons we're not really sure of- infants of diabetic mothers take a little longer with feeds (I always guess- maybe they got their sugars easily in utero!). All in all- and obviously we don't know any of the details- your situation sounds very typical. We wish you luck, patience and health for you and your family XX

@@TalaTalksNICU quick update! My baby girl is home and she is quite the healthy eater! Our nursing staff was understaffed and we would get a new nurse almost every shift. We realized that they were just thinking my daughter wouldn't feed so would barely try as not to "stress" her. They felt it was safer to tube feed. After discussing this with the doctor we decided I should stay overnight and do her feeds myself. Miraculously, she took every feed in full! 3 days later she came home! Thank you for this blessing of a channel that educated me on how to speak to the doctor. Got my baby home swiftly! Thanks again!!!

That is such fantastic news!!! So funny how the light-bulb just goes on suddenly in some babies- and obviously always helps when mamas are right there!!! Well congratulations on your baby girl. SO tough leaving the hospital without your newborn and being in that weird limbo state. You did great to get to 34 weeks, and hopefully she'll be home with you in a few short weeks. Take care of yourself too XX

4:00 my son was born at 32 weeks at 4 lbs 12½ Oz The doctor told me that he was ok just really small and my daughter was born at 36 weeks And is now 20 years old,son and 18¾ years old,daughter My son was in the NICU for 11 days

Thanks again for the videos!! I remember in one of your videos explaining the more premature the infant, the higher surface area in relation to body mass which is a reason they have a harder time maintaining their temperature. For some reason, I just don’t quite understand this! Do you have any helpful analogies? Maybe I don’t understand what surface area means.

Hi!!! This is such an important point so we're so glad you're emphasizing it! We went over it in the '9 facts about fluids and electrolytes video.' Essentially a smaller object has a much higher surface area relative to the volume as opposed to a bigger object (think of a small car and a big car- the small car is nearly as exposed as the bigger car, even though a larger car may weigh 2-3 x as much). Let us know if it still doesn't make sense after that video!!! Thanks again Brittney :)

I just had my son right at the peek of our 37 week this year august 15 he’s in the nicu in oxygen he’s doing a lot better but he’s still got a while to go he was 5.14

My baby was also 37 weeks she had low blood sugar so they gave formula but I am breastfeeding and wasn't able to for a while. Now we are worried about her getting enough she is able to pace herself tho.

The doctor gave me bactrim for an bladder infection I only took one pill cause I felt a strong shaking in my abdomen however that was a week ago and I feel the baby kicking and moving around 10 times a day. I'm concerned

Congratulations on your pregnancy. It is such a scary time. We take care of babies, so we can't really comment on your pregnancy. Bactrim is generally safe during early pregnancy though and it sounds like your baby is moving well. Hopefully you can follow up with your OB soon.

Apnea for late preterm are how long? More than 10secs or more than 20 secs? And what about this periodic breathing. Say a baby forgets to breathe for about 7 seconds? What would we call that. Of we're presenting a case, would we just say the baby has periodic breathing? Or would we follow up with specifications, timing, frequency or occurrence

Great questions. Periodic breathing doesn’t need a lot more explanation but events do. An event is considered an event if lasts > 20 seconds or it is associated with color change. It is good to know what the baby was doing- sleeping/ feeding/ stooling and where the baby was- on mother/ in bed/ in a car seat. We need to do an apnea of prematurity lecture soon!!!!

My baby is 38weeks now she was born at 34 weeks so now she sucks and swallows well but is still very inconsistent only eats 30ml of the 62ml she is to eat. I am so confused what should I do

Congratulations on your baby Diana! Obviously I don't know the details (and can't dispense advice!) but very often babies just need more time until they suddenly get it- or build up stamina/strength to finish feeds. Good luck!

Good Evening Ma'm .. i am from India .. my baby was born at 34 weeks but her weight is 11.18 grams. Her lungs are fine and she is taking express feed as of now , today is the 12th day and her weight is 1.21 grams . Bilirubin levels are fine is there anything we need to keep in mind or as the doc about her progress ..

Thank u Dr Tala, my baby was born 35+4 weeks weighs 2.3kg at birth,he has been admitted in the NICU, Co he was throwing up whenever he is been fed, breathing and temperature is ok, any reason why he throws up after been fed.

Congratulations on your baby! A good size too. I really can't comment on why your baby is throwing up- there are may reasons- reflux, intolerance to feeds, too much gas in stomach- all of these are related to prematurity. Other much more rare reasons could be because of anatomical issues. We wish your little man a good NICU stay and hope he will be home soon :)

Generally- the LMP is an accurate estimate of due date (if cycles are regular and you know when LMP was!). If mothers don't know their LMP- or it's very off from the ultrasound result, then both factors are taken into account. We hop this answers the question?

My twins babies 1 b & 1 g weight 1.7 & 2.05 . delivery at 33 week .today is 10 days in nicu .having breathing problem lungs are not fully mature. Oxygen hood and CPAP appilies how many days take to mature my babies lungs and when my baby will near me . 😭😭😭I am so sad without my babies please reply me 🙏🙏🙏 I want to hold my babies in my arms .. 😭😭😭

Great question Maribel. A baby can go home when she can do all the stuff we'd expect a full-term baby to do- i.e- keep herself warm without external heat, eat enough, breathe easily on room air, have no more events and pass the car seat test. There is no real age that a baby needs to reach to go home- but usually doesn't happen before 36 weeks. Babies need to be around 4 lbs (~1800g) to go home in US- because the smallest (easily available) car seats are made for this minimum weight. Thanks for watching!
