34081 “92 Squadron” absolutely STORMS over the Watercress Line (Front Window 12)

The steep gradients of the Mid-Hants Railway give the perfect opportunity to hear locomotives working at their very best, and this is no exception. Filmed at the railway's Summer Steam Gala, the recently overhauled Bulleid "Battle of Britain"class, 34081 "92 Squadron", gives a breathtaking run from Alton to Medstead and Four Marks, over the 1/60 gradient.
The locomotive can be heard giving a pounding 3-cylinder beat that, even from the second window back, peaked my microphone at some points! It was an astounding run up the line, one of the best I've ever had.

Another 3 cylinder beauty captured here, I drove 92 Squadron earlier this year & the crews I worked with described her as a caged animal just waiting to be opened up, a magnificent machine & very sensitive to how you drive, a genius creation of Mr Bulleid!

The only way to travel by rail. Long may this last. As long as there are folks willing to put their expertise into training (see what I did there?) others to repair, operate and rebuild steam traction, we can have these things into the next century. And we have Dai Woodham to thank for it all.....

So that's why I have always thought southern Bulleid locos were boring... they have just never been driven properly!! Although imagine if that had of been an s15 or a standard 5!

The prevailing gradient from alton-M4M is 1 in 60 quite steep in le south only being beaten by upwey bank

Some parts of the Bluebell's East Grinstead extension are 1 in 56 and Tenterden Bank on the KESR has bits of 1 in 50.

I was on the belle with 35006&80078 below 15 the standard's 2 cylinder beat was louder above 15 the bullied seemed as if it was going to push the standard all the way up that loud

Thanks Tom. I use a Panasonic V770 camcorder, coupled with a Rode Videomic Pro R, with a Rycote Mini Windjammer to cut out the wind noise as best I could.
