Beautiful Curtis Mayfield song that Brian Hyland certainly did it justice. It stood out on AM radio in 1970. Congratulations on being part of the recording.

Thanks for commenting on Bryan Hyland and the lovely recording memories. I was in Toronto going to school and on the CHUM radio station in 1970 the # 3 song was Gypsy Woman, and Eric Clapton had #2 song After Midnight #1 Smokey Robinson Tears of a Clown. But I loved the Bryan Hyland song the most because there was something that uplifted you, how he sang the lyric "her eyes" or "carousel", some nice words and I loved the intro with the bass and drum and Bryan's voice so clear. I truly loved your recording. I have Bryan's cd of all his singles which he had a lot. The bikini song was quite popular as a young lad hearing on my transistor radio, was so good. My all-time three favorite songs or recordings are : #3 - Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell. #2 - It Must Be Him - Vikki Carr and my favorite #1 - Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song. Take care.

You channeled Mr. Peabody( not your dear dog, the cartoon) and threw us into the Wayback machine big time. That song got a lot of radio play, not to mention all the jukeboxes! And, I liked it! Russ was a big part of what made that song work. Also, remember the itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny yellow polka dot bikini, that she wore for the first time today. And, Del Shannon, wow. Decades later he and Tom Petty became friends and worked together. A memory filled post today, Lee. Thank you.

Chilling vocal ... (in a good way!) I didn't really realise just how wonderful his voice was on this track .. WOW! I too, grew up hearing this on the radio .. I was an 8 year old when this was released but of course, our ears were attached to our transistor radios and the cool desktop tube radio I had in my room (thanks to my folks!!) This track was a dance-around-the-room-track. Nice to hear it as a grown up (???) Still a great track! Classic! :)

So cool DEl SHANNON one of my all time favorites and a Michigan artist.. this is the day Kennedy was killed 22nd.. My grandfather also suddenly passed this time at age 44 in '72 he headed the family radio television shop on Fort St. in Lincoln Park just south of the Detroit border that was in the family a few generations.. MC5 grew up a few blocks away, Bob Seger and others haunted the area.. We lived a few blocks away i loved riding my bike there as a kid till they had to close around '82.. I still have some counsel stereos from the shop i jam out on and a 45 of East Side Story from Bob Seger and the Last Heard with the shops name taped to it.. Our family used to know the iconic Detroit area dj Dick Purtan and family early on.. Have watched this post several times so far lots of cools details.. Must have been amazing fun jamming the early gigs.. Your bass on this track is so strong and smooth no wonder it helped launched your studio work..

Thanks for playing that song, Leland. I was 8 years old living in Little Rock, Arkansas when Brian's version of "Gypsy Woman" first hit the airwaves. Dad would drive me and the family around town with the radio blasting, so the song brings back memories of him and the days of my youth. Dad died thirteen years ago on November 30, 2007... his anniversary being two days from today as I type this. Think I'll play "Gypsy Woman" in his honor. Knowing you played bass on the song makes the song even sweeter. Thank you.✌🙂🎼🎵🎶

Leland. It must be awesome to share these experiences of you actually in the studio playing on n these songs. I've been a no name guitarist for decades playing privately for very famous artist of those years when Bryan Hyland did these songs. And I know that feeling when your playing a great song by that really moves your emotions while your playing. Thank you very much for sharing these moments with us. I play this song as part of my practice sessions because I I feel that great emotion while playing it. I've followed by you for me decades went to a few of Phill Collins concerts in Cali and Florida and other places. I was good friends with Jr.cobb or JR. As we called him from ARS. played for several years with former members of that group. And your name came up all the time . Best Wishes Best Regards. Thank you..

In 1970 the model airplane club I was in went to the NAS Mira Mar Air Show (Blue Angels headline) in San Diego and they had a plane there called "The Rising Sun" doing demonstrating and I had this song playing in my head as soon as they announced the name of the plane. The Brits call those wagons "caravans". and they long predate RVs, but serve the same purposes. There's a violin repair guy here in NorCal named Ifshin, who used to spend his summers touring with the Roma people, as they have have lots of wonderful old instruments from prior generations, and he would often refer to someone emerging from their caravan with some wondrous find, many of which he bought, reconditioned, and are now cherished by their happy US players - pretty safe bet that Gypsy woman was dancing around the campfire to the strains of a violin- played passionately, no doubt.

Second the emotion on KZfaq Premium Definitely worth $18/month! It also enables, across Apple devices, at least, continuous playback - i.e.: video continues to play when you switch to a different app, as long as that app isn't trying to use audio services. I take advantage of that all the time- off to Google a name or topic, while still hearing Lee or other vlogger in my Airpods, and when the phone rings (including via MacBook or iPad Facetime audio,) you can pick up the call, KZfaq pauses, then resumes when you're off the call, as long as the same device is used for YT & phone call. Premium lets you save clips locally for offline viewing, too. It's the cat's pajamas };^)>

Hi Leland, not sure how to pronounce your last name, but I really enjoyed your introduction to this song. It's so strange that for the first time years, I heard this song in my sleep last night and played it as I was waking up in bed this morning. I was born Feb 8th 1957, so early in 57, and I lived through that era. I had a little radio by my bed, living on the beach in Newport by the Santa Ana river jetties, and I'd listen to all these songs on the radio. So, this morning I wikied the gypsy woman song and found out who wrote it. And listened to the curtis mayfield version, which I had heard before and love, but became fascinated by the difference in Brian's version. In my older age I've been watching western movies before bed each night for a couple of years now, because my relatives were early pioneers. So I get to live sort of vicariously through the early westerns. But the ambiance of Brian's version is really amazing. It brought that song to the top. With Brian's inimitable voice, and the back ground music, to me, brings it back to the old west, especially with those native American sounding deep pounding style drums in certain parts of the song. Not sure which instrument you were playing, but that is one of the greatest emotionally moving and classic songs of all time. So today I was on youtube listening to songs of the sixties and your video came up. Thanks for your story about the song.

Has anyone ever mentioned that you remind them of Gandalf? I wish I were Gandalf! I'm glad I just stumbled into your channel, and I just subscribed. Btw, I'd like to also mention another good oldie Brian did- 'Sealed with a Kiss'. That's so cool that you did studio work with some musicians from back then! I need to do some research on your channel and find out more about your musical experiences. I never met any celebrities, but I was a good friend of Janis Joplin's road manager and good friend, Kenneth Johnson, (Kenai). I don't know if you've heard of him. He knew everyone in the North Beach and S.F. music scene back then. I knew him after Janis passed away. He passed away about 12 years ago. He had some amazing stories that he told. Like the time he was the cook on the Medicine Ball Caravan. I met him in Hawaii, '75, just after my father died over there, as he jumped aboard my dad's trimaran that we lived on, pulling out for a sail to commemorate my dad's life.

A good explanation between recorded music and music played in 'real time'. Much of recorded music is made by dividing time between construction and re-construction at different sequences of time. The professional can record in either method.
