A simple explanation for the inconsistent nibs: I work in injection molding, it is not unheard of for two molds that make the same parts to vary a tiny bit. Molds get dirty, I mean really dirty. All the gasses created from plastic under high heat and pressure make a mess. To clean them you got to pull the plates apart and pull out the cavities (in this case the face of the key, the rear would be on the core side) You need to clean and polish to keep a consistent finish and an easy release. There is a release additive in the colorant used but that's a whole other topic. Its not impossible that the two nib cavities got swapped in cleaning or even just wore down over time but the latter is unlikely. Once you put a mold back together, set it in a press and start it up you are not going to stop it until it needs maintained. For a cheaper set my money is on there was a tiny mix-up when rebuilding the molds. It can also be a process issue. Those "wings" are called flash, parting line flash to be exact. Parting line is where the mold splits to eject the parts. This happens when there's too much packing pressure, not enough clamp pressure or a myriad of other things that can cause it. If the mold is not properly balanced you will get inconsistent fill across all cavities. Inconsistent fill is called a shot, when a part comes out short of a full part if that makes sense. Double-Shot means the part was made of Two separate "shots" of plastic layered on top of one another. That's a very expensive mold, I would venture this mold runs very high cavitation as well, probably a stacked mold, 256 parts per shot (one round of injection to make a part) likely around a 5 second or less cycle, probably $1M or more if you wanted to buy one. Hope that helps.

I'm all down for clones, competition is good, and if GMK wants to be competitive instead of a shitty company that takes years to deliver their keycaps and at crazy expensive prices, then they better catch up.

Using the akko R&B samurais since the gmk ones are way out of my budget. Have to say, this keycap set are so cheap yet so good. Haven't found any problems with the legends or the molding at all! All for a third of the GMK's price

i have some gmk clones as well and i'd say there might be different manufacturers. I own multiple sets from different sellers and the packaging and quality are different. But yes i do love the options you have for cheap and hey they are PBT and wouldn't shine as much as ABS keycaps.

I have that exact 8008 clone, same packaging. They feel really good, my only gripe is the spacebar: the color is a bit "orangey" at the center, and the bar is lightly bent. Other than that... they sound and look amazing, so I don't care at all.

The same company on Amazon actually sells a thicker keycap for a bit more. You bought the dye-sub single layer pbt ones, but I think they offer a similar double shot PBT option for around $40-45. I've bought from them twice and love both sets.

I find the pricing of "official keycaps" offensive. It is plastic folks, plastic. Now I am all for paying artists for designing the sets and I am aware that keycaps are not a mainstream thing to produce. Less produced units means higher prices for the Creator. But up to 250 bucks? For plastic? That is just insulting.

I have a better 20 USD keycaps, XDA profile. No bleeding, really thick PBT. Fonts are amazing. Downside is it has less compatibility.

True that the GB model needs to change, it is ridiculous to shell out $200+ and having to wait 1 to 2 years to get your custom keycaps. I'm all for respecting artists works and all, but the vendors put all the investments on the buyers and charge a premium on top of that. If they charge $200 for an artist custom design keycaps set, It should be delivered within a 3 months window at the max not a year or two.

Its decent enough for me. I buys 4 set's a very cheap PBT keycaps @ $10 each set, and get 2 defect spacebar I can't use. But I'm only use 50% keycaps each set to get 3 tone keycaps for my 2 keyboard collection.

One thing GMK should learn from the clone maker is packaging, it was a horrible experience for me, I had to spend another $15 for Linworks keycap tray to make everything stay where they are, that alone could buy a set of cheap clones from Taobao lol.

I know people get upset about clones and say it's detrimental to the hobby but when i look at GMK's business model of charging ridiculous prices with 1-2 year wait times i have to wonder if they're hurting the hobby. I want more people to experience how cool this hobby can be without breaking the bank or having crazy fomo, and if GMK as big a company as they are can't compete with the reasonable prices of some clones and even some other companies that have original designs in stock consistently then maybe GMK will only have themselves to blame.

These are pretty crappy for what you pay. I'd say it would be better to get alfei for gmk clones. Shenpo is another good option.

For cheaper keycaps that don't steal novelties, I recommend Akko (cherry/asa pbt), Aifei/YongQiu (cherry/sa pbt/abs), Ducky (oem/sa pbt/abs), Varmilo/Shurikey (cherry abs), Leopold (cherry pbt) & Taihao (oem pbt/abs).

I like to view these knockoff keycaps to the same way I view people pirating movies. Statistics prove that those who pirate at a young age are more likely to actually purchase content when they come into money as an adult. I am living proof of that. I used to pirate every movie and show I can think of, but now I actually buy films, shows, and music, whether it be physical or digital. People who buy these, specifically the younger generation, are more likely to one day buy genuine GMK's when they come into money. But if you're frugal like me, you'll buy these knockoffs even if you can afford genuine GMK's. 😂

The only issue I have is the ethics about buying clones (of anything, really). You end up buying someone else’s design that was stolen by a company that had 0 contribution to its creation.

You say the Shift key is like the real GMKs (which you point to) and then continue to say it's not the real GMKs. What??

It's *somewhat okay* if you buy clones if you're on a budget, but you should always support the original artist :)

Almost every large keyboard KZfaqr and streamer agrees with each other that GMK Clones are unethical for stealing designs, inconsistent and often poor quality, and vary by manufacturer, whereas GMK is a safe bet every time. Their argument is valid from multiple standpoints, but there is evidence to show that GMK is losing a LOT of business to cheaper sets and knockoffs almost as a form of protesting against spending $200 then waiting 2 years for a product that will shine away in just months with heavy use. I think the best way to move forward is to save up a little more for an Akko or similar set (They're fantastic, I have a Black+Pink ASA PBT set) or, especially, look online for used/open-box in-stock GMK sets!! While limited runs sell for crazy amounts of money aftermarket, buying sets that are in-stock on Drop or Amazon from eBay or Reddit is a fantastic opportunity to save money on a high-quality keycap set and get it fast. I paid $60 for an open-box set of GMK Lazer and it's one of the best purchases I've made...GMK would be soooo worth it if they were more competitive with PolyCaps, Akko, or clones.
