For Episode #200 I thought I'd do something a little different. Sorry if this one seems too self-involved, but I wanted to sort out my own personal history with heavy metal. Over time we forget some details while others get mixed up to the point that some statements we make about our past are unintentionally incorrect. So this was a chance for me to review my time as a heavy metal fan and try to straighten out when I did, and didn't, do certain things as I head-banged my way through the past 35 years.

honestly, I found your channel totally by accident. I had always "kinda liked metal" but had no idea that things like Cirith Ungol or Manilla Road existed. i keep discovering more and more and it's thanks almost entirely to you sharing your collection on your channel. Keep the videos coming!

Very cool to hear your metal journey! We are about the same age and there are a lot of parallels. I remember your first appearance on the pandemic streams. It feels like yesterday but also 20 years ago, haha. Here's to 200 more, cheers Alan!

Great Topic and detailed timeline showing your music journey. Bought my first metal album in 83 Maiden PoM, slacked off during mid 90's- Early 2000 due to raising kids , Enjoyed Alan Take Care

Really cool video, interesting to hear how people got into collecting. I was lucky, my jr. high English teacher was in a death metal band. We'd listen to metal at lunch, he'd lend us CDs- Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, ha! I designed his logo. I also listened to KDVS- UCDavis college radio- found a ton of underground metal and industrial (used to tape shows, then write down band names). Before I got a job, I'd save lunch money, plus allowance, to buy one CD a week. This was mid 90s, graduated high school in 97.

This was a great topic for Episode 200. Very interesting to hear your recollections of your metal journey. The condensed version of mine would read: Prog >> Led/Purple/Sabbath >> NWOBHM>> Thrash >> Total Rejection of Black & Death Metal >> 20 year hiatus into Americana/Old School Country/Classical/Jazz >> NWOBHM Deep Dive/Doom >> The End (for now)

Hey Alan. I think the metalheads in the community really enjoy this type of content and wish more people did it more frequently. Not always hinging your videos on a specific sub-genre or year and spending more time on the person’s history with the music. I also have a gap in my metal history. Mine would be 98’-2008 and that probably shines through with our metallurgy topics and conversations. As always - great video and congrats on 200 episodes.

Happy 35th Alan! Great great video, it reminded me a lot of my own history with the music and collecting stuff. Compilations, older friends, radio shows being taped... I started February 21st 1986, my 11th birthday. You´ll never forget your first, huh? Maiden´s debut was my "Metal defloration", hahaha... Now that we know each other´s story we can hang it up and start "more serious" hobbies, hahaha... well, maybe not!!! ...ask the seniors of the community...

Nice story Alan myself I got into heavy metal in 1993 and it probably stayed a constant in my life for nearly 20 years had a period from about 2015 to 2019 where I got married bought a house etc sold more albums than I bought but again it was lockdown that got me back into collecting I started watching youtube discovered more bands and now I can indulge in a little used cd buying every couple of weeks and I thank you and marty for some of that!
