Finally someone who knows how to properly idle one of these cams. Thank the lord. It doesn’t sound like it’s gonna fucking die.
@KingJT80
@KingJT80 10 ай бұрын
yeah this is how it's supposed to be done doing it wrong means youre idling with a performance cam too low and youve messed with the idle transfer slot and how much its exposed and now youve screwed up the fuel mixture doing that, causing you to chase your tail in a circle over something so simple . these bigger cams need more initial timing while keeping the total timing the same. MSDs are handy for this

Yup....plenty of intial timing and spending time on idle air bleeds etc. So many sounded like mush lol. Carbs we get these days are so much better though back then we had to drill them out cobble em etc.

For those of you, including myself that are fans of the good old Comp Cams Magnum series, look at the isky megacam series. Just about identical to Comp Cams except the LSA is 108 instead of 110 the duration is just a hair bigger. I always thought this might be so they couldn't be accused of copying. What I have seen on the dyno and on the street and racetrack is the isky cams hit harder lower with torque, whereas the Comp Cam carries high RPM a little further, meaning not as much drop-off when it finally drops off. Both are old school that still work well. Just a modern FYI although I've been doing it for 20 years or more, if you run any kind of flat tappet be it hydraulic or solid lifter, get the camshaft nitrided. Comp Cams will now do it in-house. It used to be I would get the camshafts and then send a bunch of them out to a different vendor to get them treated. Never had one go flat. And believe me we used a lot of spring pressure for racing oval track and quarter mile. Of course we broke them in the right way. I won't get into that that's an entirely different conversation LOL have a good 2023 everybody keep on with the hot rods

So right!! Mega cams always hit wayharder...they got peak rpm faster than the wider spread of the comp it took longer to get there. Used both and theres nocomparison. One would think 2 deg lsa wouldnt make much difference...wrong.

THe old 390-400hp 350 recipe was an 11-1 350 ported camel humps dual or single plane and 750. Isky version hit a little harder but they both ran decent. You needed at least a 4.11 gear and 3000 stall minimum. Good for high 12s in a nova for instance.

You nailed it. We ran a 750dp holley, a Victor or torque intake, 202 camel humps, headers, flat top or mild dome(11-1) pistons and comp 292 or isky megacam. 411 gears and had our high 12 second chevy. Fyi' the isky on a 106lsa was great. We always used the ovaltrack specs for our hot street/strip engines. And such a great thumpy thump thump idle. Love it to this day. ( just listen to my old school V8 vega panel express.

Make no mistake about it, that "old" cam profile gets it! I had the 292h mag in my 383 stroker, changed out to the 294s mag. I got a 12.33 @117mph in my 81 camaro, with a 4 speed manual and 3.42 gears. The solid cam gave me a few more mph and better low end torque. My next 383 will be the 282s mag, I LOVE those camshafts.
@gordocarbo
@gordocarbo 5 ай бұрын
The 282S is a stellar cam so is the 294s. Not a comp fan but some of those older grinds worked and werent radical enough to flatten lobes out. Same with Isky love that era of cams.

@patrickritenour6935
@patrickritenour6935 2 жыл бұрын
@Tony Tronto Not much at all. The carb that is on it in the video is not the carb that is on it now. I have a 750cfm dual feed holley on it now. The engine is regrettably still sitting on the stand bc I haven't had time to install it yet. Once I tune the carb and set timing to 34-36 degrees total, I expect to have 8-10 inches of vacuum. I will have to use a vacuum pump or use a reservoir because the engine will not make enough vacuum for power brakes.

It's a 2 piece real main seal 4 bolt 350 sbc block. Very low miles on a standard bore so all I did was give it a fresh hone, and checked the deck for flatness. Factory gm forged steel crank, eagle rods, speed pro Pistons and rings, king bearings, kmj/assault racing cylinder heads and polished air gap intake manifold, scorpion roller rockers, and proform stud girdles. Cam is a comp 292h which is a really old school grind from the 80's. Alot of old timers used to run this cam in their drag cars. It's a bit on the big side for a street car, but it's manageable with a 3000-3500 stall converter. Specs for the cam are in the video description. 244/244 @.50 The cam only has .501 lift, but the heads are set up to run up to .630 lift if I decide to switch it over to something bigger down the road. Total build cost was around $3500

@@patrickritenour6935 you should’ve gone with 106 on a flat tappet cam. Anything else is straight up garbage. Proven time and time again a flat tappet cam in an sbc Makes more power with a lsa of 108 or lower and the proper lift for the heads. I have less lift on my engine but just by the sound I can tell it makes more power than this.

Lol. I was trying to make it easier to hear the cam lope. It sounds amazing, but was very hard to hear because it was kinda windy that day, and the pipes were hanging out the door from the 30 min break in process. I need to make another video. I fired it up the other day inside the garage with the doors closed and it sounds so much more badass. I need to quit screwing around and get it installed in my old c10 soon. I'm anxious to really open it up. It's built to handle 7000rpms, but I haven't gotten it any higher than 4500, and that is just a split second. I need the added torque converter weight and engine load in order to get it to Rev higher.

@@scottalvarez8870 that is a 1977 cj5. It has an AMC 304 v8 in it which is the factory engine. The engine is bored .030 over, has aluminum heads, fairly mild cam but better than stock, edelbrock intake, and 500cfm edelbrock carb. The factory ignition system is junk in those things, so i put in a modified distributor that uses the gm hei with the coil in the cap. It still has the original 3 speed manual transmission in it though. It will only run like 55-60 mph without screaming like a banshee, but its gets there pretty quick!

@@patrickritenour6935 hi scott,- have you tried something like a 650avs2? We just pulled off a Carter 500 and installed the edekbrock 650avs. Engine is mild cammed 302 ford with dart iron 200 intake runner heads. It loved the 650. Everything was happier. We have no downside to report. It's an auto trans with tight converter as well.
