Everyone needs a different tool. Sure, some people are just intrinsically good with any rifle (it's crazy the things I've seen in combat), but finding the right tool for the right person can make them capable of doing some seriously impressive shit. Most of the time it's not the rifle, it's the scope. Lol

The part that messed me up the most was at the end “ no this wasn’t fun “. That to me told me everything I needed. If you’re a shooter the best part of any gun is learning it, sighting it in, seeing what the gun likes to eat. Nobody ever confirmed zero, no other ammo was used to see if the gun preferred something else. I’ve had competition rifles that baffled me spending hours at the range adjusting loads. I wouldn’t blame it all on the rifle in this case.

The youtuber is verifying something that we all already know. Walmart sells price not quality. Walmart is where you go to buy a starter item. Same shit happens with walmart skateboards. The bearings are ass, the board is too thick and heavy, the wheels are trash with no grip. There's tons of walmart products that just kinda either break faster than they were supposed to or don't work as intended, or that don't measure up to industry standards.

What a coincidence, we just performed a similar test using the same entry-level rifle last week. We were in Hailey Idaho and used the same “entry-level” rifle vs an $8000 set up both shooting the 6.5 Creedmoor. We shot out to 500 yards and the entry-level rifle performed well considering what it was. We hit steel most of the time with it which was pretty good for a bunch of fly fisherman… LOL. Oh did I mention that a couple of the fly fisherman are retired “teams” guys. We certainly weren’t complaining as much but we probably didn’t drink as much coffee as this guy did that day. LOL

I bought a 2nd hand Brno .308 for £100 years back, was shooting 4" groups at 100yds with factory ammo, I bedded it and free floated the barrel, brought the factory ammo inside 2", started re-loading specifically for it and was consistently shooting 1 minute from there. Did the same with a BSA .222 rifle and was cloverleaf 3 shot groups at 100yds, was a great rifle for foxes and Roe deer.

I had a similar issue with my hunting guns. Saw on a forum that people narrowed the issue down to the stock fore end basically touching the barrel. Took the stock off, bedded the entire front end with 2 ton epoxy, and added silicone to the buttstock. After a week of drying the front doesn't touch anything on the barrel even when i apply slight pressure on the bipod. Guns shoot much more consistently now.

@@redmanoutdoors9632 You don't always get what you pay for. There's plenty of overpriced junk and there are rifles like these that can hold sub moa groups for 350 bucks. The spotter wasn't great, but realistically he gave good feedback. A little to the left, a decent shooter should be able to work with that. At least get closer instead of shooting the same spot over and over again. And complaining about the gun, and the bag and the wind and the sun and the moon. It looks more to me like he didn't sight in the rifle so he could say "oh it's not my fault, the rifle isn't sighted" if you're at a gun range, sight in your gun. That's ridiculous. Yeah he passed a class, I'm sure he could shoot fine if he wanted to. But he didn't want this gun to look good and he made it not look good. "I had to spend 14 shots trying to hit it" No he spent 14 shots sighting it in. He would have to do that with ANY rifle. That's part of setting up a rifle.

Jeremy C you’re most right he should have spent the time to sight in the rifle, like you should do with any rifle when you get to the range no matter the price. I’m not gonna lie Toby even said they’ve never had a deer run away after a shot from the rifle. I’m just trying to say that he has a little more leeway to complain about the quality of the rifle. Now I’m not saying that he can blame his shooting entirely on the rifle, but he has proven before that he is a good shot on the range with a rifle... I just feel like people are bein a little harsh on judgements when he’s already proven he can shoot shit by passing the military’s sniper school.

I would say if he took the time to zero in the scope before shooting the video then he probably wouldn't have complained so much. The video was mainly him sighting the rifle. Maybe its the old Marine. We had no issues with the Ruger, bolt draw back was smooth and lock up was clean. Feeding mags once we got used to it was no issue. Two things that threw him off. 1. Wind. His spotter literally asked if it was wind and he said definitely not but watching that tree in the background and the grass through the camera. You could see how strong the wind was during the shot and bullet travel. Every time he missed the wind was going strong but when he hit the wind was low or dead. 2. Stock At the start they mentioned it was a $300 to $350 rifle off the shelf. I have one in 7mm-08 and the stock at the front can be bent into the barrel if you squeeze it. Every time he shot that from end of the stock was taking the weight of the rifle and could have affected the shot. For those of you who don’t understand how that affects the shot research barrel harmonics (or look up some videos on it). All in all he complained way to much about it being “what you pay for” and it was “a cheat as fuck rifle”. It was more he was overconfident in his ability to shoot that he let it get in his way of learning to shoot that rifle to its specifics. He is a trained sniper and does know what he’s talking about but he half assed this one and it took a toll on his shooting this time. Don’t hate on him for it and I think his classes would do any beginners some good on how to shoot and zero your rifle. Edit: grammar error sorry God bless you all.

Also, why does he have such a huge ego to hitting a target at 300 yards with magnified optics when anyone military can hit targets at 300 meters with iron sights? His problem is he was Army trained. Give him a Horus reticle and I'd bet it instantly improves. I shoot with a army sniper. I just get lost in all his nonsense the army taught him. I simply fire based on the ballistic calculator, and correct if I miss. Using a MIL based reticle with MIL adjustments and spotting my own hits makes it easy. Add in the time to get good chrono data, Strelok Pro for ballistic data (trued, and using multi-BC), it's easy if you spend the time to learn and efficiently use a few tools. The most important thing is recording and analyzing the DOPE after every range session. Continually improving the data in the calculator to help you in the future. Lets not forget, nobody can read the wind perfectly every time. His wind calls were just sloppy.

Love watching this shit dude. Is there any way when you go to the view of the target that you can put an arrow on the video to show which one you're aiming at? Hit markers would be dope too :D

First tip...don't wrap your thumb around the stock...rest your right thumb parallel to the rifle, you don't want to introduce a deviation to the rifle as you squeeze. If you can manage, pinch the trigger without gripping it at all. I've watched masters shoot and I was blown away by the details of precision shooting...This comment might piss people off, but that's not my purpose. I thought I was an expert until I watched pros do it right and want to share.

Vietnam snipers used allot of Winchester model 70 in 30-06. They didn't seem to have a problem with a rifle you could buy at Walmart. This is laughable.

If that’s a American ruger it has a accu trigger and is very smooth! the barrel starts to warm up and also shoots different than a cold barrel.

Rugers name for it is the marksman adjustable trigger, not as good as the timney but still a good trigger, in my experience with the American rifles they don't seem too badly effected by the barrel warming up, at least not at 100

My gunsmith recommended the ruger American for my first bolt action. He said, if I end up liking it, there’s a lot of aftermarket support Andover time he could turn it into a completely custom rifle a little bit at a time or all at once.

@Lucky Day those rugers are easy 1 m.o.a. shooters, but he would have known that if he would have shot a 100 yd group. Claiming the gun is crap, and no good past 200yds is a joke. KZfaq full of guys shooting same rifle with less scope out to 1000.

@Lucky Day He's got about a 10" target and with a spotter he should be able to account for wind to bring his group back to 10" or so. So aside from some fliers he should be hitting the target most of the time. Of course what I heard from his spotter was "A little left, left, no you're hitting left shoot right, more right, too high and left, too far left. Do you want me to tell you to aim right?" If he had just done what his spotter was telling him to do, then he would have hit. Also he started out completely wrong. He didn't sight in his rifle. He's literally at a gun range with boxes of ammo. And then he's using every excuse: The rifle, the bag, the stock, the scope, the wind, the sun, the moon...

I wouldn't call myself a great shot. I got into the Creedmoor Round, a few years ago, bought a Mossberg 6.5 w/Vortex scope ($350 Combo). Boresighted it at 25 yds. Got it on...Not only have I not missed...but I'm tapping 450 yds with 125 grain ammo. Buck this year at 290 yds. Again, the actual price of the combo was $349....

Just found your channel. Really liked the video. I noticed you didn’t shoot your rifle. Curious to see how it would have compared. I’m a gunsmith and had a question. Would you be willing to redo the headed to headed shootout after doing a few minor things to the ruger like upgrading the stock and having it bedded? Did this with a Savage Axis and was able to achieve 1/2 MOA groups consistently. Thanks for your service and for the video
