Come right along as we test the hot debate of Film vs. Digital photography! In this video I go around town with my Yashica FX-D 35mm loaded with some Kodak ProImage 100 film and my Canon 7D digital camera, shooting the same images with the same settings on both to compare the results and see which one is truly better. Spoiler: it doesn't matter shoot with whatever you want. ;)

I bet you if you where shown several photos with no identification if it was taken by film or digital you would guess wrongly most of the time. Is so subjective, to me the digital looks better, sharper and the colors look more accurate to what it looks in real life, however the film ones are a scan it would be nice to see them in paper.
@ahsokaincognito
@ahsokaincognito 6 ай бұрын
@@teresashinkansen9402 Guessing correctly between digital and film is one of the easiest things in photography if you have good eyesight. I can get 9 out of 10 correct atleast in a blind test. The film colours obviously depend on the film, and while they are more accurate digitally, if that's the only benchmark alongside sharpness you may as well just use a newish smartphone model.
@teresashinkansen9402
@teresashinkansen9402 6 ай бұрын
@@ahsokaincognito Well audiophiles say the same thing yet has been proven many times that not to be the case they are an extreme case. Amateur astronomers say the same, that their boutique telescope enables them to see so much better to "cut thorough seeing" Then when their telescope gets tested against a good commercial telescope of slightly worse strehl but significantly larger aperture and its image quality its measurably better, they keep saying the same. If you can easily identify the difference between film and digital its usually because film looks much worse, too grainy and inaccurate colors. If you like that that's fine enjoy it! Smartphones take nice photos but their small aperture and inability of handling different lenses limit them too much, they are great for quick unplanned shots and recordings when you have no camera at hand.

I am curious how much impact the lenses have. What if you used a C/Y to EF adapter and shot manual aperature and focus on the digital camera with the yashica lens? Are the differences due to film vs sensor or lens performance? I suspect it's a bit of each. I am using an old Zeiss 50mm f1.4 on my Canon RP via a C/Y to RF adapter. It's works very well. Although both are sharp, there is a subtle but clear difference between the native RF lens and my vintage lens.

@@chrisdunn3241 I noticed that film make lighting feel more blended-together to objects while Digital feels like there is CGI in it, so u made me realize the reason CGI looks fake nowadays also little bit related to that digital look that doesnt blend objects together, objects look like too much differentiated like not getting affected from nearby objects , transluceny of leaves or subsurface scattering effects of trees also is lost , so I dont know technically why, but thats how it feels, maybe its because of the fact that our eyes are more like film and blend objects into surroundigns by scattering light over all objects more smoothly with more transitions, so when we see how digital camera show objects differentiated harshly, it feels fake and soullesss to humans. Personally I always felt cold and soullesss in new movies after 2008 , so its probably related to that. (except some movies that feel like film that I ll mention next) U said we cant replicate those film tones, I saw the movie Fast and Furious X and it feels like Film, so I guess there are some post processing ways to make things look like film, right? and maybe if AI gets better, we can have a AI FILM conversion for digitally captured images so it will be both inexpensive while we get the film feel without manual color grading. I think AI is a great area for making this happen easily

Of course, it will always depend on the quality of the lenses and camera and actual 'subject'. Colors can look amazing on film but this shows up only on some photos with high contrast and rich colors. On most other photos, a digital may actually look better as film needs the right light and contrast to produce beautiful results. Myself I just prefer looking at my old film photographs when I'm nostalgic for that look, then use a digital camera. Speaking of film colors, I think some Pentax lens could capture amazingly rich colors when there was a strong contrast in the image. If you like stronger color in a film, go for the Kodak UltraMax 400, if you rather like sharper photos with a pleasant color use Kodak Ektar 100. The Kodak Gold 200 looks rather dull to me. Also most important is the Photo Lab that will develop your photos. Most labs today will process the film chemically then scan it to digital and use a printer. If the technician is skilled, you will get good colors. If it a careless random guy, you won't get good results. Final tip: 95% of digital or films photos on internet have been digitally enhanced using various editing software. If you want to find a real photo from a camera, look for the photos taken by tourists that don't pay much attention to the subject.

Hi. Nice comparison, good shots and interesting places. I really like the atmosphere of small towns in the USA. It's hard for me to find information on the Internet about my idea: I want to take pictures in difficult lighting conditions with an analog camera with quite expensive film. I will use a Canon DSLR and a Canon analog with the same lens. Will I be able to take a photo with an analog camera while taking test shots digitally and obtaining a satisfactory effect with the same settings? I know that the visual effect will be different in that the exposure is correct and I would even like it to be a little overexposed. (I also want to use the gray filter, but in different conditions). I will be grateful for your response.

You can see how especially with yellows, digital colors blend. CMOS sensors really have this problem, and it's easy to tell if someone is shooting CMOS due to lack of color seperation. CCD sensors handle colors much better than CMOS, but lack high resolution sensors, unless you have Leica money. Foveon sensors are the closest I've seen to film color from digital regardless of brand and that includes EVERYTHING up to 2022, that isn't a Hasselblad or PhaseOne shooting 16bit but even the CMOS Hasselblad cameras have this color issue. The H3D was the last truly great digital cameras. Also CCD sensors are global shutter, so they have 0 rolling shutter for video, but they typically are low resolution. I guess someone could use Gigapixel Video Ai. CMOS sensor scan meaning you'll always, always have rolling shutter especially with electronic shutter still shots. It'd be nice to go back to CCD, CMOS was a downgrade. Hopefully the stacked CMOS sensors do well but they still have CMOS rolling shutter.

As much as I truly love digital ... I think I prefer film. Too bad I sold all of my film equipment a few years ago. The only problem ... ? The constant expense of film and processing, and the complications of how / where to store it all. It can be hard enough to get the very best of results with film, but it can be even more complicated to do the same with digital. And if all you shoot is RAW then you'll be spending every spare minute in front of your computer monitor with a bunch of Photoshop buttons to push. BUT ... ? I seriously believe that far better results can be achieved with the right medium format camera or larger, the best film and processing, and the best lenses for film. Yeah, what's best for each medium can actually be slightly different. I'd be satisfied 99% of the time with medium format Fuji film and processing, a 160 speed or maybe a 400 speed film, and my old Mamiya 6 square format medium format camera.

Tempted to dig out my old Minolta SRT-101 and lenses but put off by cost and availability of film and turnaround time of commercial processing and printing. Not much interested in artistic photography anymore. Immediacy of seeing results, near immediate home printing of stills, and viewing of stills and video on PC or TV are a big advantage IMHO with not enough advantages to film photography.

If you imagine yourself to be a serious photographer you'll probably feel the need to master the use of film and also digital photography. If you come realize that you really just enjoy photography and don't care about labels you may come realize that digital is just a heck of lot easier to shoot and get acceptable results. I like film and digital, but when is about film I like everything larger than 35mm, 35mm offers no significant advantages over digital it just has all the burden of analog photography (that can be enjoyed though). Digital is extremely versatile and looks beautiful, specially due the capability of very accurate color rendition and low noise, also the auto focus makes pictures look so sharp, is the perfect medium for wild life photography were the perfect photo is in fractions of a second and for learning technique and composition as you have nearly unlimited shoots for next to nothing also excellent for scientific photography also has the capability of HDR. For film as I said anything larger than 35mm, medium and large format is awesome, it offers stupidly high resolutions compared to digital, excellent for landscape photography and other scenes were you have time for longer exposures and setting up, macro with such formats looks amazing and unique. I enjoy both a lot but because I like to take photos at equestrian events my most used camera is the digital one.

I strongly suspect your digital kit has better & more expensive glass than your film, based on the sharpness discrepancy. My two cents: If there’s *any* use case that justifies the expensive & trouble of film, it would be portraiture, which you don’t show. That said, there are obviously editing pre-sets that are designed to make digital shots look like film, and so I’m not convinced that even with the best film glass, that film’s extra costs can justified.

I feel like film had a more narrow exposure latitude, but most of the time got richer darks with more detail in the dark areas. Film looked far less tolerant of overexposure.

I was a projectionist 2000 thru 2013. I can say without a shadow of doubt, when I ran 35mm Inglorious Basterds in cinema 1, and 2k Inglorious Basterds in cinema 10, opposite... I watched from Bio both movies at the same time. The color, motion, and clarity were super realistic and a joy to watch on 35mm. Digital sucked, it totally sucked! motion clicks jumps, jutter, and a brand new projector too. As a projectionist, film is absolutely superior. Digital has so many issues, not least how fake it looks. Pixels suck. Film rules. Eyes dont lie. Thanks Quentin for filming that one in 35 going against the grain.

to me digital and analog dont compare because you dont take photos with the same lens and cameras.as a short digital is sharp and has more contrast than the analog.

this is more of a comparison of a vintage old lens against a more modern lens for digital cameras.

You can process digital to look exactly like film if you want to. There is nothing magic about film. Film has a dynamic range of about 9 stops but the response to light is not linear. On most things we are able to view it on, we can only observe about 5 to 7 stops. Film has a natural nice way to compress this. That is the film look. Use filmic in Darktable or Rawtherapee etc to process digital the same way. Most sensors easily do 9 to 14 stops of dynamic range now. The fact that you can look at a so called film image on a monitor and tell it is film should already be proof that a film look can be represented in a digital file.

I grew up on film cameras, and was even lucky enough to have gone to a school that had dedicated art and photography courses that provided dark-room access and training. I really do not see the appeal of film compared to where digital photography is now. The vast majority of film photography evangelists are hipsters who romanticise it but are far too young to have been around when film was the preferred medium for photographers and are only after the analogue street cred. The level of control you have with film is much more limited. Setting your exposure is much more limited and you have much less control over your results: a) your ISO is set by your film and you can't dial it in for every individual shot b) you can't "preview" your shutter speed and have to rely on rules on thumb and guesswork c) tools you have available for physical development were much more limited - i.e. to physical development of your film - and you have much less control over the outcome. Photography with film back in the day was much more about following set rules and fixed principles compared to what digital provides. Modern digital mirrorless and DSLRs provide much more creative freedom and granular controls that elevate photography closer to the level of "traditional" fine arts mediums such as paint and sculpture compared to the limitations of film.

Freedom doesn't drive creativity, limitations do. Digital succeeds only at being an inferior human eye, film is more of an artistic medium, especially for those that have a life outside of photoshop.

@@dited358 What hipster drivel. But lets take your comment seriously: 1) Film and digital are both taking light and imprinting it onto a medium - neither is anymore closer "to the human eye" than the other. Whatever the hell that means. 2) lets say that film is closer to the "human eye" by that logic, all photography is inferior to art, and photography isn't art at all. 3) If "creativity" is a product of circumstances, it isn't creativity at all. Your argument makes no sense - as I explained, shooting film forces you to be much more shackled to rules and procedures. Doing things the same as everyone else is creativity? 4) Film photography has its own "photoshop": its called a dark room. Unless all you are after are the analogue equivalent of Instagram photography with your iPhone on automatic. The darkroom treatment is as important as getting your exposure right on your camera itself.
