I walk through a little fishing town on Elba, Italy early one morning for some street photography with my Sony A7RIV and a 35mm f1.4 GM. I only had an hour because then the supermarket opened...

Love this kind of video. Part of the fun is when you stop walking to take a photo -- I like to look at what you're seeing (via the GoPro) and guess: a) what you're about to photograph, and b) how it's going to be composed / framed. I get it right only about 20% of the time, but it's still really fun and a great exercise for me.

Absolutely love your POV videos. What a charming location. Also, STOP is pretty much an universal word by now, you will find it in plenty other countries besides Italy.

STOP is even used in international sport. In Olympic boxing, the referee only says two words, both English: "Stop!" and "Box!" He has to mime all warnings, such as "stop holding" or "no rabbit punching". That overcomes language barriers.

The 35/1.4 GM is TWO lenses in one if shooting on a high resolution camera. Hit your crop mode button and the lens immediately turns into a beautiful 50/2 equivalent. I like 50mm more than 35mm, so I keep my camera in crop mode until I need a wider angle and then hit one button to pop back out to 35mm. Works perfectly! I have the 50/1.2 as well, but the 35/1.4 is easier and more flexible on vacation.

Hi James! In Italy, Stop signs aren’t exactly in english, it’s just that we use the same word when it comes to traffic law. Fun fact: when the director of a movie says “cut!” on set, in Italy we use the word “stop” instead of “cut”.

The Vienna Convention (1968) set the international conventions for road signs (especially shapes) and adopted the US design as the standard with 'STOP' written in either English or the native language. The US sign (and the word STOP) was so well known by that time that many countries just used the US version.

Hey! Nice video! - Elba is pronounced similar to elbow so you got that right! - In Italy most towns have a thing called "raccolta di rifiuti porta a porta" literally curb-side waste collection, you'll get bins on street every other day (sad for street photography). - The little truck is in fact called "Ape" (that means Bee in English), it's from Piaggio, the same company that makes the Vespa (That means Wasp). They have a thing with insects. - As someone already said, STOP is universal I love the pictures you took in this video! Hope you had a great stay here in Italy!

These are my two current favorites as well for walk-around urban/city photog: the 35 GM 1.4 and the 20 f/1.8 G. They're both fairly compact and light. The 35 can handle 90% of the work and crops in nicely to about a 50mm tightness without losing much resolution and then the 20 can come in and save the day for when extra wideness is required.

I haven't finished watching yet but I qas wondering about your bin comment. You said it kinda ruins the aesthetic but I would argue that is gives a photographer more of a challenge to take great photo's where you don't see the bins. And I think with many bins comes less littering which very much helps the aesthetic. I might be wrong though, I have sadly never been to Italy yet.

Got into this video thinking "this might sway me towards keeping my 35 GM and not order the 50 GM", but after watching it, I ordered the 50 :D Was hoping that 35 and 65 are my ideal combination, but 65mm is too long too often and looking at my 35mm photos from the last 2 years I think many could have been better at 50. I just hope that's not GAS talking xD

The streets are similar to those here in Malta....for certain details I prefer a zoom lens (18-150mm on APS-C) as sticking to one focal length makes you miss some interesting shots. I do carry two primes with me for certain details (22mm and 32mm - again on APS-C).

Hi James! Absolutely love your channel. You make capturing wonderful photos look so effortless. Thanks for sharing your process and knowledge. Have you thought about adding the aperture, shutter speed and ISO as a caption on the photos? As a beginner photographer it really helps me learn. It does add a bit of extra work and could be distracting to others so understandable to leave them off. Either way, ill be looking forward to future videos :)

your pictures were good, considering what was on offer.... the first 2 were very high key, and some others were too. This effect was rather interesting, as it simplified the image. I guess large parts may have been blown out. Still the effect was rather pleasant. You also tried underexposing... and I think in the future I will consider exposure in a similar, more creative way. I personally think 35mm and 50mm are 2 quite different focal lengths... so I have both those primes ( though I use Fujifilm X series ) Anyway, once again, I followed and enjoyed your comments and photos.
