@@shemeemsharaf nevertheless he avg 44 in FC Cricket… which is definitely good to get selection… moreover he started playing for Bengal in 96 (just because bombay had far superior batting quality to prevent him from getting selection) , but at that time ganguly was only starting his career for india after a long wait … he wasn’t captain at that time Moreover not succeeding in the international arena dosent mean nepotism… unmukht chand , w v raman, Sadagoppan ramesh etc all failed at the international level..and that is not nepotism… mark ramprakash had 114 fc hundreds..but couldn’t succeed in Test Cricket… there are many players like that…that dosent mean nepotism being born to a talented father does not constitute nepotism

Friend, I had mentioned about his 774 runs in my earlier comment. In fact that was the one of the few occasions he had batted for his country. You just go through his latter videos and convince yourself. Don't think that I am deliberately blaming him. I had been following cricket since 1968 onwards through radio commentary and from 1984 onwards through TV channel. I had criticised Sachin and Kohli also when they erred. As far as I am concerned everyone should play earnestly for India's victory.

Those who had heard the commentary or witnessed him playing willl never forgive him. The sad thing is that many young cricketers emulated his style of play after nearing a fifty or century, thereby sacrificing the interests of the country.

@@Arjun-ej7fjVijay Merchant was not a defensive player at all. Your view is therefore not at all correct. Ten how did Gavaskar score 774 runs in just 4 test matches in West Indies? After that our commentators had been seriously discussing about he completing 1000 runs quickly. He became a purely defensive player ccaring only about his personal records. Unfortunately, the cricket writers r commentators did not criticise his attitude. In fact most of them praised him for his defensive play.

In fact most of the Indians in the 1930s were. “Vijay Merchant is regarded as the founder of the Bombay School of Batsmanship, that placed more importance on right technique, steely temperament, and conservative approach rather than free flow of the bat” Wherever there is no emphasis on free flow of the bat but on right technique batsmen tend to become defensive… there is were players like Sobers and Tendulkar stand out who allowed free flow of the bat at times more than the rught technique. The above mentioned bombay school of batsmenship was the case of almost all the Indian batsmen from Bombay. Even medicore players like Sanjay Manjrekar had the right defense. Moreover being defensive doesn’t mean selfishness… Then Dravid , Pujara ought to be in that category. your view is wrong. Commentators and media praised his technique as they did for players like Len Hutton in the past. Agreed that this innings was selfish, but the same gavaskar was the hope for India if they wanted 400 to chase in the final day of a test match. Also scored the fastest hundred back in 87 wc by an indian in ODI. Also don’t forget his 96 ball 100 against the West Indies at Madras in 83

@@Arjun-ej7fj Those are only a few exceptional matches. Our former players did not play to create personal records. They tried to win the matches. Gavaskar was the most selfish player the world has ever seen. I had heard commentaries from 1974 matches and was furious when he did not make any attempt to win the matches.A classic example was the last over in which India needed just 11 runs and he played the first 3,balls defensively an d took a single in the 4th delivery, leaving Chetan Sharma to score 10 runs from the last 2 balls. Needless to say India lost the match because of this legend. I will never forget this worst last over played by him or forgive him.

His 34 centuries in test cricket was at that time the world record. 3. His batting average in test cricket is almost equal to Sachin Tendulkar and higher than Virat Kohli's. 4. He played in an era when Indian fast bowling was a joke and yet faced the world's best quickies without a helmet and on uncovered pitches and came out with elaan. 5. After the great Vivian Richards he was the next best as a test batsman during his generation 6. He made his debut in test cricket in 1971 and scored 771 runs in just 3 test matches which was a world record for a debutant. Your knowledge about Sunil Gasvaskar seems to be very limited. Agreed he was not a great ODI batter. But as someone who followed Sunil Gavaskar from his debut to retirement I can still relive the immense joy and pride I felt as an Indian.

@@asifkareem15 it’s actually your problem that you can’t digest that he is an incredible player😂😂 actually he is an incredible player without a doubt.. only 4 players in the 70s avg above 50…and gavaskar is one of them.. and criticisms, that is not a new thing…most of the so called legends of today had faced criticism from yesteryear cricketers Donald Bradman was criticised for his batting style after the 1928/29 Ashes by Frank Wooley , Percy George Hebert Fender (Captain of Surrey) despite Bradman scoring 400+ runs avg more than 60 including 2 hundreds Bill O Rielly said Chappel and Border was like kids in front of Bradman… so criticism is common in all generations…. in some cases gavaskar might have gone above the limit …agreed but he has also made good claims about Tendulkar , Vengasakar, Azhar and Kohli saying their ability to hit the good balls for runs and degrading himself saying that he didn’t have that ability agree that this innings was bad one, but not accepting him as an incredible player i guess sounds like you ego
