Get a lot of questions and some think I'm lying about the temperature (no, I never have). If the title says -30, it should go without saying that that's the LOW for the trip...the temp fluctuates, of course. So I made a video for the top 11 FAQs I get about winter camping: *1) If it's so cold, why can't you see your breath?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *2) If it's so cold, why is there slush on the lake?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *3) Why aren't you melting snow for water?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *4) What is the temp inside the tent?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *5) Why winter camp at all?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *6) Why aren't you wearing snowshoes?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *7) How do you poop when it's that cold?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *8) Aren't you worried about carbon monoxide from the stove?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *9) Aren't you afraid of animals attacking you? Where's your gun?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html8 *10) How you you power your devices?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html *11) Why don't you use a floor?* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WepaqG2cuclIE.html Hope it helps clear some things up.

Canoe guy! I know that your name is Jon, but to our new baby you’re known exclusively as “canoe guy”. The pandemic kept me at home, heavily pregnant, missing the campgrounds my husband and I love, waiting while the world figured out how to survive a pandemic. Now that the outlook is bright for a return to campgrounds, we are booking camp sites and playing with our new baby boy during a very cold winter. When we are itching to get outside for more than a walk, we put on “canoe guy” and our son watches you make fires, catch fish and explore the beautiful Canadian wilderness. I am so thankful for your content. I can’t wait until my son can see that crystal clear lakes and trout are not too far out of reach. We love you canoe guy!

I moved out to Canada 22 years ago and had big plans to do some of what Jon and Erin do. Sadly I too am disabled now and probably never will get to try these things, so watching all these wonderfully made shows really helps me, sort of living vicariously through Jon and Erin's epic adventures, so cool, love 'em all.

When I was in the military, we had a couple of tent stoves. The type you’re using plus a pot belly type. That with a tent liner, it kept the area toasty. I’m seeing the powdery snow and thinking how dry the air is. The little bit of steam from the water must feel good on your nose.

What a great way for a couple to spend a Valentine's Day weekend. :) Good improvement and advancement on your igloo builds. I know what you mean about wanting to have a mentor. I only wish I lived closer as I would love to build one with you both and give you some pointers and time-savers. I've built several 8-footers just this winter (see my FB page for examples). There's nothing like seeing it done by someone who's built them before and then trying it under the eye of someone who can suggest minor corrections and improvements to your process. But, until such time as we can arrange something like that, here's more written suggestions. LOL I noticed a little something about how you were moving your form after completing your blocks at the 17:27 mark: You are not making consistent use of the toggle handle release. The U-bar gets lifted first, which causes the outer panel to spring out a bit, releasing it from the outside surface of the newly-made block. But there is a toggle handle at the top of the pole which, if you raise it after lifting the U-Bar, causes the inner panel to spring out also, releasing it from the inside surface of the newly made block. Whenever you are moving the form, use both mechanisms as this releases the tension and grip that the form has on on the new block, permitting the slip-form to slide off with greater ease and so reduces the chance of breaking or even just chipping a block. At the 17:45 mark, a block broke on the 5th course while trying to remove the form. This happens from time to time and there are two principle causes. The first is that the form was not positioned so that it was at a near perfect 90 degree angle (square) to the pole. If the angle of the form is anything more or less than 90 degrees, it can't just slip off the block, but instead jams against the block itself. It's worth checking and double-checking that angle when making those blocks so as to avoid cracking or breaking a block when it comes time to move the form. The other reason this happens has to do with the 3-dimensional geometry of the dome shape itself. The slip form has a gently curving horizontal arc which allows it to slide off the blocks along the arc of the newly made block and rest onto the wall to the left of it. But as you climb higher, that arc gets tighter. This is what happened at the 19:00 mark. The arc on the upper courses is a much tighter arc than the shape of the slip form itself. What's more, the previously completed course of blocks to the left of the slip-form will always be angling in towards you and up, not just extending out and horizontally to your left, even when you're not at the ramp position, so sliding the slip-form off the newly made block means lifting the form up, not just sliding it to the left. Eventually, that arc and the angle get so tight that it's advisable to remove the U-bar completely to release the block, then release the toggle handle, and now you can spread the slip-form open by hand much farther apart and gently lift it up and to the left to release the block without it jamming and breaking the newly-made block. In the highest courses, the outer panel comes off entirely, as you know, but I find that around course 5, it's often necessary to remove the U-bar when moving the slip form and putting it back in to start the next block. I hope these tips help, and I wish you a belated happy St. Valentine's Day to you, Jon & Erin. Cheers, - Martin
@LostLakes
@LostLakes 2 жыл бұрын
Aha! Thank you so much for this as always Martin! It would be so much more enjoyable to make one with you, I wish the logistics were simpler. The written instructions are still a big help...if not for you our toggle would still be upside-down 😆 I'm sure Erin will be interested to read this too. Thanks again for your time and insight and happy belated Valentine's Day to you as well sir!

Thank you so much, 'neighbour' (from Orillia, ONTARIO). Loved the belly flops & cannon balls. Re the igloo: I think that I would followed your suggestion & placed branches across the top with a light layer of snow. I have a DIY pulk that has much lower sides. It is designed with tie down Caribiners along the perimeter for quick lashing down. It is towed by 2 poles that cross & attach at the waste. These poles are quick detach, thus allowing the pulk to be towed by its tow rope.

Building a igloo with that sort of snow is not easy. Living in Norway I have built a lot of igloos, but in the mountains with much harder snow (result of wind making the snowparticels small blowing by the ground, an then getting packed together so you can cut blocks.) The best result with your condition would be to use the snow you have walked on while working in the box. This will make harder/stronger blocks. You see this in the film At the winter sea ice camp here on KZfaq. My favoritt learning source on igloobuilding. They use that type of snow between their blocks.

As a kid we had hand held snow block makers, I think they were made by wham-o toys. We used them when we went on winter scout camps they just werent this big, but 2 or 3 of us could make enough blocks to build an igloo for 6 in about 2 hours. But this is a totally different procedure. Very cool 😎

Seems like the new stove is working out nicely. Best version of Valentines Day couple camping, although you might try Hawaii next year, you know, as a contrast. Cheers!

Perhaps you happy winter campers should try the foldable Coleman Camp Oven on your tentstove. You could bake bread, pizza and cinnamon rolls!

@@LostLakes have a Google. This foldable stovetop oven is sold by Coleman since the 1930s. I have one imported from the US because it seems to be non conformant to EU regulations so Coleman doesnt sell it here. I believed that every Ameddican camper had one. Its a simple sheet metal box with a grid and a door with temp gauge. Folds flat to 45x45x5 cm. I love it.

Another amazing trip. Lovley to see you and Erin together again. Beautiful views, fab snow and loved the igloo. Who knew trying to build an igloo was so technical 🙄 I absolutely love the new stove. When you open the door it sounds like the gates of Mordor opening 😆 My daughter found the bit with Erin about the being a catapillar in your sleeping bag 😅😅😅 Looking forward to your next adventure 💜

I agree: your plan B for the igloo. Some branches & boughs with snow over should of made for a workable roof. Always nice to have a tent & stove to retreat too!

Absolutely perfect Valentines day! Thanks for carrying the love all the way through and eternally. PS Erin, I used to go backwards in my sleeping bag just like a caterpillar. My friends would get in there too, and we would slide down the stairs if you could believe it. I wonder who came up with that bright idea? Great seeing you too together.

The leather boot repair shop told me to dry your boots out better and make the leather last longer lay them on their side so the dry out quicker because the air circulates through them.
