When it comes to the white tower, I like the displays they have, but I'm more interested in what is was. What was the room used for originally, the chapel is obvious. And the architecture, so much has been changed. For example the 2 door on either side as you first enter, where do they go? The stairs where the boys were found, I can see them on this level what what were they used for? Where did they go? I'm a yeoman warden's nightmare.

I would not recommend a VR headset with this if you are prone to motion sickness. An hour later and I am still feeling the effects. There were times that the camera moved to fast in a turn and caused a lot of discomfort. I paused a lot to be able to look around. It was also on the blurry side. That being said I found it to be enjoyable and informative and something I would watch again without the headset.

One of the best half hours I've ever spent indoors.. This was fantastic. Thankyou.. I would never in my lifetime get to see this place up close and this made it possible.i would have prefered u didn't edit the walks out from one area to the next even if u consider it boring.. For a viewer it was enthralling.. Esp when I put vr goggles on.. Just looking up and down outside was glorious.. A little blur but that's poss my phone or the tech at such early stage still.. Cant wait until pic really are 1080..like the inscriptions in walls, they were not visible to me. Even the large crest was difficult to make out.. But apart from that... Fantastic.. If anyone had made it in my comment this far.. I challenge u to find out host holding the camera contraption, toggle his flys on his trousers and then keep his hand resting upon his genitals for a little uncomfortably long.. Lol.. Really he does do this...

I have noticed in many films and pictures of the white tower that there are small arched windows at the top level. And it looks as though two were bricked up. Am I just seeing things or is this the face. Also why would those windows be bricked up?

I’m really surprised the yoeman warder did not know where the term “beefeater” comes from. Back in the day royalty would display their wealth in terms of gold and silver plate on side tables against the wall that were “buffets”. We still have buffet tables to this day. They had 💂♀️ guards standing on either side of them guarding the gold and silver plate .... therefore they were called “buffeteers” which became beefeaters.

Informative, gives a great feel for the vastness of the spaces...downside is the 360 can be somewhat confusing and dizzying...could not focus closely enough to distinguish certain objects being highlighted in the tour...the effort is much appreciated and once this technique is fine-tuned it should hopefully give the viewer closer imagery...was this using GoPro?

This is fantastic. I've always been fascinated with the Tower of London, it's history is just beyond all imagining to your American cousins across the pond. Well, at least this American cousin. Having seen some of the recent Smithsonian Channel broadcasts about the Tower merely piqued my interest further. (Oh, & many thanks to Dan Snow for his series The Last Warrior Kings. It was superbly done and made for compelling viewing in our home.) Now that Mr. Snow has hosted this, it simply adds an element to an already great idea. With COVID-19 & its new variants adding danger to air travel, it would appear that my and I will have to postpone our planned trip to the UK yet again. I'm light of that, being able to tour the Tower of London virtually is precisely what the doctor ordered. My sincere thanks to Mr. Snow and Chief Yeoman Warder Kingshott, for such an enlightening video. Cheers gentlemen!

In his will Henry VIII stipulated that should all 3 of his children die without having children, the throne was to pass to the Gray Family, who descended from one of his sisters. Edward VII altered this to bypass his 2 sisters and thereby give the throne to Lady Jane Gray. Elizabeth I altered Henry's will in order to bypass the Gray sisters and give the throne to James VI of Scotland (who was descended from the other of Henry's sisters). If Elizabeth had the legal power to alter her father's will, then so to did Edward. This makes Jane Gray the legitimate Queen of England and Mary Tudor was the usurper and traitor.

Certainly a valiant effort Dan, though as a Tudor historian, I find it appalling that this Senior Yeoman Warder continues to spout such inaccuracies and historically proven fallacies as substantiated truth! In fact, he got most of it quite wrong, from the actual execution site of Queen Anne Boleyn down to “her choice” of execution by the French method of an expert swordsman and a lot in between. Had I been there, I’m not certain that I could have kept quiet and nodded politely as he spewed error after grievous error. WOW! Very disappointed! For the record... The remains found during the Victorian renovation of St. Peter ad Vincula are in individual boxes with name plates and installed in a crypt behind one of the chapel walls. The execution site was about 50 yards away from the monument, closer to the White Tower, on the parade grounds near the Jewel House The choice of a French headsman was made by Henry VIII as a last minute mercy, since he figured that his image and reputation might suffer if the Queen he turned the realm inside out to be with suffered an ugly, sloppy and potentially botched appointment with the usual axe. The headsman’s name was Jean Rombaud and he hailed from a long and distinguished line of headsmen, and had been summoned from Calais appropriately 3 weeks before Queen Anne Boleyn stood trial. Monsieur Rombaud earned the commission when Henry’s emissaries watched him behead two condemned men, back to back, with a single stroke. Where is the mention of the five innocent men that were accused with the Queen? And while I’m bitching, why not mention that Lady Jane Boleyn was Queen Anne’s sister in law, married to Anne’s brother George, and known best as Lady Rochford during her lifetime? Dates are wrong, facts and figures are wrong, events are wrong, names and places are wrong and huge details are left out. Again, I know it’s not your fault Dan, but this is a very disappointing, exceptionally hollow presentation for a so-called expert and representative of English history and the British monarchy itself

Dayna Goodchild, while I'm not a historian, I was aware of many, if not all, of the errors the Chief Yeoman Warder made during the video. In particular the fact that Henry VIII hired a sword wielding headman from France to dispatch his Queen and that Anne Boleyn had nothing to do with that in the least. The insight you provided regarding Henry's motivation was entirely new to me however. Monsieur Rombaud most assuredly earned his commission by doing the job efficiently, if every account I have ever read from eyewitnesses is to be believed. In another comment I read here, the individual stated that the Chief Yeoman Warder was extremely poorly informed since he was unaware of the etymology of the term "beefeater." In every history I have ever read or seen, no one truly knows for certain how it came about. If you have knowledge regarding "beefeater", I would like to hear about it. I don't qualify as a true anglophile, since in my family they are still referred to as "sassenachs", as he betrays his Scots roots with a single epithet, . Cheers Ms.!
@daynawithawhy2 жыл бұрын
@@ciAMkia Thank you for your kind and gracious response. To add a further layer of Tudor wtf to the entire affair, M. Rombaud was hired and en route at least 2½ weeks before Queen Anne stood trial. All accounts...even Chapuys and we all know there was zero love lost between Eustace and Queen Anne...say that Anne defended herself eloquently and ably, but her "guilt" was a foregone conclusion. What Hal wanted, Hal gotted. Taking it one step further, on one of the dates that Queen Anne was apparently committing treasonous adultery with one of the also doomed 5, she was in fact still at Placentia in chambers, recovering from childbirth. Then one must consider that the woman whose Book of Hours survives to this day, the same woman who demanded an English language Bible be put on a stand in her room for all to reference, the same woman that designed a Rood Screen for her chapel to preserve modesty while she worshipped...twice swore on the Host...before and after...that she had never offended against the King's Grace with her body. She didn't and neither did the 5. As far as beefeaters? It's one of two...either because they were paid with beef or stemming from the French word for Buffetiers, those food guards so common in French courts
