The English commentary couldn't help but keep mentioning or praising his name throughout the game. He was arguably one of the best players for Portugal on the pitch today. So much so that the commentary speculated, given his performance today, that he has what it takes to potentially start against Czechia (Portugal's first match in the EURO Cup.) His style of play is truly sublime & can put on a show, even when juxtaposed with "the best players" of today. Though, he's got a lot more impressive dribbles & other moments of magic. Yesterday morning, Francisco Conceição got called up to Portugal's EURO 2024 26-man squad. 🇵🇹 I honestly always felt that he deserved a spot & it has come to pass! Here's what's amazing about this. Of all the great, newly Portuguese talents and/or prospects that could have been selected and that have played for Portugal prior such as Francisco Trinção, Bruma, Jota Silva, João Mario etc., Conceição was the only player of these recents to be called up. In fact, in terms of prior selection, Conceição is the most recent of them all and he caught the eye of Portugal's National Coach, Roberto Martinez early on. For me, the more you watch Francisco Conceição play, the less he reminds you of Messi. I'd prefer that people see Francisco Conceição as himself. For him, to be labelled to "be like" someone else doesn't help his image or reputation. Yes, his short stature, for which is dribbling benefits from, may remind you of Messi but he is quite different. This young man has his own style of play. Let me give you some sense of what I am saying. Bolstered by his burst of speed, flair & agility, his style of play consists of dribbling, quick footwork, body feints, even occasional stepovers. He is strong on the ball & displays confidence in the way he moves. He has a way about him that whenever be dribbles the ball, he seems to elegantly glide, particularly when changing direction. For a right-winger, he does a lot of back-tracking. He has a high defensive work rate, such that he can become a nightmare for many forwards & midfielders, believe it or not. He can intercept opponent's passes very well, so you can expect that of him from time to time. When it comes to creating chances, his through balls are always vital. So, do not mess them up! He sends missile-like crosses from outside the box, in the sense that roughly 95% of the time those crosses reach his teammates, yet they aren't always scored. When he's taking on a defender from the wing & wants to take a shot on goal, he tends to pull wide. From the moment he pulls wide, mostly to his left, his take-off position to the trajectory that ball travels after his kick at an acute angle, directly at the gap between the post & the left leg of the keeper. It's a favourite of his that we don't really see much from other players. It is a deadly feature of his playing style that frequently takes defenders & goalkeepers by surprise. If you only give Chico an inch of space, you've got to foul him. He'll dribble past & drop defenders if you make that mistake. That's how it goes. But as Conceição continues to play football and he continues to get more exposure, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about & then some. I can understand Neto with the season he had, but you make good points. Still, the player that I question is Conceicao. Trincao’s mentality holds him back, but I’d still rather have him in the team. I’m a big Trincao fan, so call me biased, but I think he’s got a better end product. Also, can’t believe Pote isn’t in there. Granted these guys wouldn’t be starters, but just can’t see Conceicao over the other two. I’m also curious if there’s a bit of a bias against Sporting or bias towards Benfica and Porto.
