I can imagine how frustrating it was not being able to see the impacts at 4K meters. Being so far out there on the cutting edge of ELR shooting you guys and a few others are the pioneers for this basically! Keep up the good work, love seeing the good and the bad days because that's how life goes. Thanks for doing what you do and letting us have a peek at it all with you!

Very well done. Now that’s right up my alley. I’ve never had a muzzle break on the lighter long guns. Our heavy guns are 60 lbs. I really like your cartridge. The bearing surface of the long bullet from the ogive to the boat tail is long. Like an old Clark bullet. I heard you mention a faster twist and your right. We found the old 224 Clark bullets did not stabilize at long range as well as the VLD ‘s. That was due to the longer bearing surface of the body. Your doing great. Everything you talk about is right on target.

Words like 1/3 MOA get my attention immediately. Thank you for the video. I'll have to watch some of your other videos to see if your camera picks up bullet flight. It would be nice to be able to step through bullet flight frame by frame. I'm amazed by the distance and amount of energy carried in the few videos I've seen so far. That's some good work going on and I appreciate you sharing the videos.

There’s lots of experimentation to be done on both transonic and subsonic stability while maintaining top supersonic ballistic characteristics. Boundary Layer Control would be the best way to prevent oscillations leading to tumbling and charging the airflow to keep it laminar for longer. Bullet coatings which have one property at supersonic (high temp air) velocities and another property when subsonic (low temp air). Smooth surfaces at low ram air velocities may not be as beneficial as patterned surfaces (dimpling, concentric channeling, shark skin etc). Also diameter relief (like the Concorde had) in the bullet diameter may offer benefit. Great sport!

Keep up with the Extreme long range stuff, i can only imagine what the military has for extreme long range snipers, with all the $$ behind them and the manufacturers as well, i can only imagine what they have to use, as far as customised ELR rifles, its like anything with out the development and RAND D testing your not going to know what the outcomes are till the testing and the results are looked at and then choose the right balance of everything to use for your customised ELR rifle. :) the best work on this type of shooting is right here in australia, keep up the good work MARK and SAM. :)

+MarkandSam AfterWork I would assume in your .338 Lapua you are using Lapua brass? How many average reloads are you getting from the brass, do you anneal your brass every firing?
@markandsamafterwork7 жыл бұрын
Yes I use Lapua brass and around 8 firings without issue, but i dont anneal at this stage, I just replace and keep old stuff to anneal later, Cheers
@wldott7 жыл бұрын
MarkandSam AfterWork Thanks for the quick reply, I have done similar in the past as well but I wanted to try something new so I started annealing after every firing I have been getting 12-14 firings before any signs of incipient case head separation, although I have been trying some new brass as I have had a few batches of Lapua brass in .308 and .338 that where showing issues after 3-4 firings so I picked up a few hundred Peterson Cartridge cases to try out and they are holding up well so far, only time will tell. Have you tried the Peterson cases before?

What scope are you using? US optics says to multiply the max magnification of the scope x 100 , giving maximium scope range. Try a 40x or over scope for that range
@markandsamafterwork7 жыл бұрын
Actually, really doesn't work like that, i normally use no more than 15x, with this 4km shot I go up to 25x which work great. What is far more relevant is the amount of internal elevation adjustment, for that reason i use the NightForce ATACR with at least 120moa of adjustment. Cheers

@compeletemadness8 жыл бұрын
just my two cents worth but you may still be pushing the bullet threw the riffling to much speed in the beginning not enough at the end ? may need a slower burning powder? also once fired brass no need to resize. just measure your chambers overall length. it should match your chamber overall length or at least close. you will get less case stretch longer brass life. also mark the rear of your case so you chamber them the same each time. you will have less case cavitation and squeeze every bit of accuracy out of your ammo. I don't know if you weigh your bullets but that can make a difference segregate your bullets into five shot groups or larger. even burger can be off. you can also measure your case capacity, and weight all these things contribute to accuracy. but once you have done this you will have true matched ammo to go with the gun. love the videos
@markandsamafterwork8 жыл бұрын
+compeletemadness Thanks man, glad you like the vids, I will try to answer your comment in the steps you have mentioned.The bullet increases in speed as it goes down the barrel, that is the case for all fire arms, this is no exception and a part from the fact I don't think I can run a lead core bullet I don't think . As for resizing, I have found that really is particular to each rifle, there is no set rule. The matching ammo is where we end up when we have worked out loads and started to make thing work, your comments sound like those of a bench rest shooter and yes I agree with them there are all used to some degree, but that is a small part of the big picture we are dealing with in this this set up. Differences like bore rider bullets, monolithic bullets, grooves bullets, all that do not have true ELR data and some that can not go transonic. Different powders ranging from 135 grains to 162 grains, different brass with different capacities and different abilities that all needs to be fire formed to use in this rifle and that is not the really difficult bit with in extreme ELR shooting. The wind can change 40 times in the 4000 meter shot where the bullet travel through all that air and is doing it for 10 seconds, doesn't mean it cant be done but as said there is a bit more to it than a really nice group at even 1000 yards. Thanks very much for the comment and all the best, Cheers.

Surprised that a bullet with such a large bearing surface doesn't use grease grooves
@markandsamafterwork7 жыл бұрын
Not something used in High power rifles at all to my knowledge. This is a bit out of my knowledge base but you will find those in the likes of black powder fire arms to get the lead to go down the barrel better, not needed or even thought about with a copper jacket or in this case solid copper bullets.
@markandsamafterwork7 жыл бұрын
Those are not grease grooves, those are called drive bands, but you are right they are to reduce the amount of contact with the bore, to create less drag for a faster bullet and in theory less barrel heat from friction, but they have a side affect of a lot worse subsonic aerodynamics, so not suited for our purpose.
