The rarest variation of the Webley-Fosbery automatic revolver is the .38 ACP model. Only 341 of these were made by Webley, in an attempt to compete with the new semiautomatic pistols appearing on the market - most notably the Colt Model 1900 and Model 1902. The Colt was chambered for .38 ACP, a remarkable cartridge for its time - high velocity and semi-rimmed. Webley figured that an 8-shot Fosbery type revolver would offer the same capacity and ballistics as the new Colt, but in a revolver format familiar the the British market. The design could load cartridges individually, but also offered use of an 8-shot moon clip. Unfortunately for Webley, British legislation in 1903 hampered civilian handgun ownership and the military was not interested at all because the bore was too small. Of the 341 originally made, some were finally converted to .455 caliber models after years of sitting unsold in Webley's warehouse.
This model makes a notable appearance in Dashiell Hammett's novel "The Maltese Falcon", which quite specifically identifies it as an 8-shot, .38 caliber Webley-Fosbery. In the movie version, Humphrey Bogart mistakenly says it is an 8-shot .45, however...

I think webley need to consider putting their revolvers back into production in the states, even if with some simplified machining to make them cost effective against a S&W

Well, with advances in metal sintering, it might be not break the bank if someone wanted to reproduce oddball firearms. Would require some extensive testing, though.

Ian, I was thinking how cool it would be to travel around and see all these unique guns. @spizzardo It was the Webley Fosbery. They showed Connery racking the action by grabbing the barrel and cycling it back. Now, to be fair, they may well have substituted a different pistol in some scenes (continuity editing was/is often rather spotty when it comes to firearms), but they made a distinct point of showing it as a Webley Fosbery.

The issue with self-cocking revolvers chambered in automatic pistol cartridges, is that you might as well just get an autoloader at that point.

Although with the right marketing the idea of the moon clips could have been a revolutionary thing for their revolvers, just offer the cylinders with clips as a conversion kit or adapt them for a few and you could have had every officer in ww1 using stamped sheet metal moon clips to reload their revolvers instead of by hand or bulky speed loaders

If webly had gotten these to Market five years earlier they would have been all over the place. They were perfect for a time that had just barely ended when automatic pistols were unreliable and underpowered. I wonder if automatic revolvers would still be an option if they had had a chance to become popular before good automatic pistols came to market.

No error on it being made in 455 caliber.They added the .38 acp later as Ian has explained. The movie called the pistol an 8 shot 45 and the .45 is a 6 shot.

I was going to comment the same thing. Interesting how design ques get traded through the years. Not being a machinist, I have to imagine 'it works good enough' for both of them. Also maybe patent issues with the rotating cylinder and Colt.

There is also a FW video on a nagant revolver with the same type of pattern on the chamber. The zig-zag pattern is what forces the cylinder rotate.

The 1903 pistols act hardly made a difference to the availability of handguns, as one simply had to buy a gun licence from the Post Office first. They were available immediately over the counter. They were expensive at ten shillings, and the act was more a money raising measure than anything else. Interestingly, the cost remained unchanged for many years. I had to go to a Post Office and buy one for my first shotgun in the 1960s, when the cost was still ten shillings, so far as I remember.

Thanks for the information. As a 'yank', when Ian mentioned "the act" I had the impression it was some kind of highly restrictive law. Well, it WAS restrictive because I'm sure at that time ten shillings would be a lot to the average worker, but it wasn't as bad as I imagined. Of course, it WAS the 'camel's nose in the tent', so in the long run...

We have a similar situation now for anything that falls under the National Firearms Act, including silencers (what I gather you call sound moderaters). It is just an attempt to deny the citizens access to weapons and accessories while taxing you for the privilege.

Other than The Maltese Falcon and Zardoz, another movie that featured this gun was Van Helsing. To be fair I think they actually used non firing replicas in that film, and dressed them up to make them look even more steampunk then they naturally do. Either way, that's where I first came across this gun and have been in love with it ever since.

I remember finding the bloopers and behind the scenes footage from that movie. They were non-firing replicas and they did break every now and again. Cheap plastic sadly but dressed very well for the aesthetic of the film. Good eye by the way.

They are handsome. And they're _the_ military revolver, everybody had them. They were police service revolvers the world over up until the 70s. Which would be fairly alarming to have pointed at you.

Yes. While I think there are cooler looking revolvers, I always find the Webleys the most aesthetically pleasing for me. I prefer the normal non-automatics though, love the simpler look of them.

My uncle was a rare gun dealer and I actually remember being able to fire both of these. I remember having to be very careful with it, but will never forget the action or the grooves on cylinder. Very cool video.

The webly is one of old revolvers on my wishlist. Along with the negont. I got a S&W victory chambered 38s&w that was made in the US and lenlease to the Canadian/British in 1915. It was sitting at mg local gun shop for a bit and decided the next check I'll buy it if it's still there. A few months later they had the 45acp model. Wish I got that one too

I thought this gun didn’t even exist and was unique to Pathologic. I thought the cylinder looking so weird was just a quirk of the games’ art style. They must’ve spent a looong time looking for guns online to put into their game to find such a perfect one for it. Love the games with all my heart.

You are not alone. On a gun range one of the shooter made a joke about "automatic revolvers". He did not believe when I mentioned that they actually exist. I took a second to confirm that and he still was not really convinced. The .38 acp was new to me too.

It often is--or, well, if not strictly a typo, definitely an error. Detective fiction, especially in translation, falls victim to Fantasy Gun Syndrome a lot. Fwiw my guess would be Hammett has Miles Archer shot with a .38 Webley-Fosbery as a clue to the shooter: it's Thursby's gun, which is part of the exotic provenance and a link to the - in American eyes, rather rummy behaviour of the British in the Far East - but it's also a weapon easily fired by a woman. At the time, the idea of a woman's (ie small calibre) pistol was a trope of clues in detective fiction. Miss O'Shaughnessy is able effectively to use the revolver she takes from Thursby, because it is an automatic. Bogart rather spoils the effect by making it a mucho macho .45.

I have never in my 64 years seen this calibre Webley Fosbury revolver. It would be nice to see Ian shoot this one. .38 ACP is possible to find today; make certain it is .38 ACP and NOT super.

It would be awesome to see him shoot one. Even more of a shame that there's a bulge in the barrel on this one. If anyone's going to find another example to shoot it's Ian but who knows how long that's going to take.

@@QwertyBoredom122 Correct, that bulge means that the barrel has been weakened (most likely by using an overpowered cartridge) -- attempting to fire it could cause it to burst, causing serious injury or even death.

IIRC some of the James Bond novels also have Bond have what is supposed to be Webley-Fosbery .455 (or .45) revolver as a back up in case he needs something more powerful than his usual carry gun.

I was born in England in 1938 and started pistol shooting in 1951 with a webbey air pistol. I knew peple who were in WW1. I have been told by personds of that geneation that a reason it was liked at Bisley and not for combat was that it needed a straigh and a locked elbow to garantee its alining the next round with the cylinder. I'm currently developing a game, and I had planned to make the starting pistol just a stock-standard double action revolver in 45 ACP that follows the video game logic of "it's a semi-auto revolver because magic". But after doing a bit of research and finding out that _these_ exist, I think I'm going to model this weapon instead.

Wow ! An intro from "The Maltese Falcon". Ian should do a "Forgotten Weapons goes to the Movies". Maybe tie in with The Internet Movie Firearms Database. Also please give us an update of the price if this one sells at auction,. Morphy's site says they sold one in 2014 for $31,625.
