This 2004 Cessna T182T Skylane with G1000 avionics is one of two T182T's that we currently have for sale. We also have a 2008 Cessna T182T listed which has the more modern, integrated GFC700 autopilot. What a lot of people might not know, there is a huge price/cost difference between these two setups on the used market. The question is then, do you really need the GFC700 autopilot or is the KAP140 sufficient for your kind of flying. Avionics wise these two planes are almost identical with the exception of a Flight Director in the GFC700 version and being able to fly GPS precision approaches with WAAS. In my opinion, if you mostly fly VFR and not regularly approaches in IMC an earlier model T182T Skylane with the KAP140 Autopilot might be the better buy.
Please let me know if you know about upgradability for the KAP140 system. Is it possible to upgrade to a GFC500 and have it talk to the G1000?

Rich, I asked the GFC 500 question directly to Garmin about a month ago. Their exact response was “Sorry, the GFC 500 autopilot cannont be interfaced nor installed on the Cessna 182 G1000 NAV III Aircraft”. That was disappointing information. As a pilot that hasn't flown in over 36 years and because of circumstances in my favor I can now resume my flying dreams. A freind has cooled my jets and told me to look for a T182 for my forever plane. I now have all of my ducks in a row and as soon as my condo sells my flight training will begin and then I will start looking to purchase a 182. Time will tell wish me luck.

I bought a 2004 182 with G1000 upgraded to WAAS a few years ago. I was told that the upgrade cost $40,000. The WAAS works great for precision RNAV approaches BUT the KAP 140 will NOT fly the RNAV glideslope. Nonetheless, I find the plane quite easy to control on the glideslope adjusting the autopilot's vertical speed and the KAP 140 holds the localizer well. As you said, the AP must be disengaged for the missed, but once established in the climb and headed for the missed approach waypoint the KAP 140 can be engaged and will fly the remainder of the missed approach including the hold quite nicely. I would not hesitate to fly this plane to minimums on an precision RNAV approach.

Im guessing the G1000 would have been the biggest upgrade in the 182 for a while when introduced in 2004. Many agree, a fantastic cross country plane. Thanks Rich

Enjoyable demonstration of an older G1000 in action! The only aircraft I've personally flown the first generation G1000s was a DA 40. It was quite a departure from the steam gauges flown early in my career. The good things about it was the simplified instrument scan, large moving map, and of course the large altitude indicator. The only thing I didn't like was the amount of button pushing to do some of the simpler tasks. After some time, it got easier when one learned the shortcuts. Flying actual was great with this unit because of the centralized indicators on the primary display. Also, flying coupled approaches was fairly easy with the equipment available in the DA 40. Looking forward to future videos on IFR ops. Blue skies!

The GS 700 is nice because I’ve got a chance to see it work in a 182P model and what a very essential tools to have while flying Single Pilot IFR to make the work load easier

Great channel. Just now subscribed. Been a PPL since 1974. Flew mostly the C 172 until 8 years ago. Typical medical issues grounded me. WatChing these channels, I wish I had completed my instrument rating. Ratings.

Hey RIch. I learned to fly (PPL/MEL/IR) out of ACF at KLGB, really enjoy your videos as they bring back memories of KLGB. I have had the issue with the KAP140 altitude difference that you had while flying DA40 G1000 planes with the KAP140 AP.. In one case it was simply I had a different BARO setting in the KAP140 vs G1000. In another case (different plane) I believe it was a calibration difference between the KAP140 and G1000 (I verified the BARO setting was identical on both and yet still a slightly different captured altitude). Keep the videos coming and the shiny side up!

I should clarify for anyone new to flying a G1000 + KAP140 - The BARO setting in the G1000 is not read by the KAP140, you have to set the BARO in the KAP140 directly and that is what the autopilot uses for altitude capture/hold. In the GFC700 planes, the AP uses the BARO setting from the G1000 display so it is fully integrated in that configuratoin,

Great video and plane! My friend has a 2002 he just did a big upgrade on the engine and avionics. He went with the IO-550 310hp done by Texas Skyways and let me tell you it is fast and 4 Garmin GI275’s plus one for the engine and the GTN750/650 also G500 autopilot he did a nice job.

I recently purchased a 206 with a similar configuration, with the exception that the previous owner added WAAS which is nice. David already covered the Baro setting, but another feature of the KP140 is that when you press the up or down when not in VS mode it will adjust the altitude about 20 feet for each press. So if you are 100 feet low and your Baro is right, press the up 5 times and it should adjust.

‘56 was very light. I love the way they look too - sit tall and straight tail. Would be a good candidate for a nice refresh!

I usually took up first time jumpers. This was in 1988. They jumped with a static line. One day in late July the club had a very large class of first time jumpers of over 70 students. The club had 2 Cessna 182s. I was up 34 times that one day.3 jumpers and a jump master. I saw first hand what a 182 can do. And the club still has that 182 to this day..@@FlyingwithRich

Even when I load the baro in the KAP140, it likes to shoot through the altitude a bit. When I’m close to 200 ft of my capture altitude, I’ll shallow the V/S to 100-200 fpm to capture easier. The up and down buttons will adjust at 20 feet increments. Your standby AI looks inop by the way. Nice video.

I own a virtually identical 2004 T182T and have had numerous conversations with Garmin and Cessna regarding the upgrade you asked about. I am also an avionics technician (mostly Garmin products). The short answer is (emphatically) “NO”. In order to accomplish it one would have to upgrade the entire system to G3X touch or the like which becomes prohibitively expensive. Sad to say both Garmin and Cessna are reluctant to certify an easy upgrade to an extraordinarily capable airframe. Seems the several hundreds of early T182T owners should collectively hold their feet to the proverbial fire to achieve that goal. I’d be on board! PS, I’m really glad the market value these ships is so good.

Beautiful. I use to fly many years ago. Got my PPL in 1965. Have about 700 hours. My last flight as PIC was in 1988. I have time in the 182 but I don't remember the power settings on climb out or the sequence of changing settings. Would you be so kind as to tell me how you do it on T/O and cruise? Thanks Rich. Good job, looks like the KAP140 didn’t quite capture 1,600 feet, I have started watching my selected altitude closely as its hit-n-miss as to if it will capture or not. And I do believe you can upgrade to the GFC500 now.

Rich, with all the different aircraft you fly, is it fun to jump back into something “simple” like a 182? I remember back when I was spending a lot of time in a 310 and a Cherokee 6, it was like “coming home” to jump back in a 172. There’s just something about those high wings, almost like comfort food! Hey Rich I'm relatively new to aviation, got my ppl last year. Why do Cessna owners reference numbers like 172/206 etc. yet Cessna themselves don't reference them at all and only say Skyhawk/Skylane? Did they flip flop marketing at some point and now everyone just references the code for the model?

As far as I am aware you can't upgrade the older G1000s to WAAS.

Caught that as well. If that vacuum pump has carbon vanes, several of them might have eroded badly.

We found metal in the oil at 1200 so hours it’s getting a 0/0 factory reman engine - that’s the 1200 TTAF and 0 TTE. Thanks for watching!

No it can't fall off. It's a special mount designed for a GoPro.

Garmin doesn’t have a plan for the GFC 500 upgrade yet. I’ll get you a price on the NXi.

They don’t retrofit the GFC700. Price on NXI upgrade is somewhere in the $45K-$60K range you have to upgrade to WAAS and there is some options for that which are less money depending on availability.

It is way too expensive for a 17-year-old airplane with over 3500 hours. I wonder who is going to buy it. You can buy a brand new Tecnam P2010 for $410k.

What do you think of the Tecnam? I understood the 2010 with Lycomjng 390 was $503K. T182T sold - that market is very hot.

@@FlyingwithRich Tecnam P2010 is a cheaper and better airplane than Cessna 182 in all aspects. Anyone who does enough research won't buy a 17-year-old 182 when they can get a less than 5-year-old P2010 at a lower price.
