In this edition we bring to you the story of how President Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo rose to power through a military coup and went on to remain in office for an unbroken period of 38 years. He was loved by many and also hated by many. To consolidate himself in office, for such period of time, Eyadema employed several measures. He made use of force and compulsion and in other instances, he employed diplomacy and dialogue. His mission may have been to remain in power till death and indeed, Eyadema was in power till his death in February, 2005. Before his death, he had started preparing the ground for his son Faure to take over from him and when he passed on in 2005 after 38 years in power, he was succeeded by his son. At the time of his death, Eyadéma was the longest-serving ruler in Africa. At the time of the making of this video, Faure Gnassingbe is still the President of the Republic of Togo.

Nice documentary 👌. I lived in Togo in 1988 till 1990. The people are fantastic and law abiding. As a nigerian i was impressed. The leader ruled like a true dictator and only cared about himself amd his family. Needless to say it was police state and personality cult worship. It was not that people didn't understand democracy, this dictator wanted power for life for him and his family. Greed.

You are liying u event dont know who is the guyscall Eyadema. For us he is the best president Togo has up to now. You guys dont agree with him because he refuse to sell his country to colon. Anyway you can say what you want ... Eyadema is who he is for Togo.
