This week James and I have been driving the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq EV, with the new, larger 38.3kWh battery pack. The Ioniq is widely known as the most efficient EV on the road and this is no different, in fact, we think it's improved further. 500 miles covered, and all we can say is, it's marvellous.

I would say that in regards to the rear window getting dirty I would be inclined to say that it is the aerodynamics of the car design, which pulls the air in near the rear causing the water spray to hit the window. It's also what probably helps the efficiency!

Indeed. They state negative of split screen and dirt, but it's obviously necessary for aerodynamics and the advantage of efficiency and range also mentioned der! lol

I tested the E-208 and then immediately test drove this Ioniq in the Hyundai dealership next door. I wasn’t blown away by the 208, but got in this and just liked it from the moment i sat in it. It’s just a nice place to be. It’s a clear choice for me.

Funny...Im switching now, coming from a 2020 e208 GT...but I have realized this comes as far as the Peugeot with a smaller battery and to be honest the Ioniq is a car for adults.

I have had the previous model for 18 months and I have said it before it's the most underrated EV on the market, and this is from an from an Audi boy. The car is a complete joy, stuck in traffic on a hot day wearing shorts, the ventilated seats are an experience not to be missed. On 0 regen which is what mine stays on the friction brakes are rarely used. So mine lives on regen 0, normal mode with SCC being used 95% of the time with great milage
@decimal1815
@decimal1815 4 ай бұрын
At what level of regen do the brake lights activate? I'm concerned about potential tailgate crashes on some recent EVs and I've stopped using B mode in the Leaf now over 30mph as it can be dangerous when cars behind don't realise you are slowing down in time.

Excellent review, and I really like the two perspectives that you provide. The points about efficiency are hugely important, especially as EV ownership increases and when considered from the shared energy system perspective. All these EVs will need to be powered and preferably by sustainable power sources, so more miles per unit electricity is vital for overall sustainability and minimising impact on the environment. We tried an Ionic PHEV and really liked it so, if the EV is actually available, this will be high up on my shopping list.

Nice one guys. No lively debate is always missed when you two get going, but that is just a credit to the car. always been a fan of the ioniq. Styling for me is fine, however I just can't get used to the wheels. much prefer the wheels on the first edition ioniq. what you said about the leaf is so true. compared to the competition, people will eventually drop the leaf for other alternatives. As you say, you don't want to drive at 55 just to eak out the battery range. and I speak from experience. Ioniq - great car.

I thoroughly enjoy using Regen level 3 but also often use the left paddle if needed, which kind of gives it a level 4 & even firmer slow down. Also for those that don't know, if you hold down the drive mode button for 3 seconds, it goes into Eco-Plus Mode. Top speed is throttled, climate and a few other features are disabled, but it ensures maximum range for those longer trips where charging isn't readily nearby. I've owned a lot of different vehicles over the years and my 2020 IONIQ limited (US model) might be one of my favorites overall due to simplicity. I drive roughly 70-100 miles 5 days a week and my electric bill has only gone up $25-$40, yet I'm saving easily $120 in fuel costs a week. Charging at home during non peak/demand hours and weather situations will ensure the least amount of KwH usage costs as sometimes power companies charge 3x the money during overly cold or hot weather. Usually most power companies give a detailed cost/usage time frame so you can ensure your not wasting money at a time when you could of just charged it a few hours later for much less money. The car has a built in scheduling system to start and stop charging automatically to ensure you follow the cheaper rates.✌️

I really enjoyed your fair, honest and down-to-earth review of the Ioniq ....... thank you! Your conclusions reinforce my own, albeit from only a short test drive of about an hour in the Ioniq Premium SE a couple of months ago. I'm going to be getting my first EV in 6 months time and the Ioniq is a strong contender as it will certainly meet my needs. I've also shortlisted the VW ID.3, MG5, Hyundai Kona (2021 model), Kia e-Niro and Skoda Enyaq for test drives when restrictions allow. I will be very interested to see what the new Ioniq 5 looks like and costs when it's launched. This may also be added to the list, depending on price and when it becomes available. I share your opinion of the external appearance of the Ioniq, particularly the rear split screen. But the range and efficiency benefits outweigh the aesthetics for me. The standard equipment levels, particularly in the Premium SE model, are on a par with the Lexus RC300 F Sport I'm currently driving, which is remarkable when you consider the price difference! I'm sure the Lexus UX300e will be a great drive but it's just too expensive, so won't make the cut.

The salesman at my Citroën and MG Dealer in Merthyr Tydfil South Wales was saying in the bad storms we’ve had recently their driver used the ZS ev to take customers home and pick up etc and obviously had to use air con for the windows lights etc he got 125 miles out of it, was showing 10 miles left when he charged it back up at the garage. And we have a lot of hills around here too.

I've had my 2018 Ioniq for a year and travelled 40,000km. Cash price was $49,000 in Australia. The 2020 Ioniq can be bought now for $52,000 as a dealer demo with a few thousand km. I don't regret having bought mine early but if I'd waited a year I could buy a second hand 2018 Ioniq now for about $40,000. So in a year my car has lost 10 grand. I guess we've yet to see what the real depreciation is going to be on EVs considering their longevity. An EV will have much greater reliability and less deterioration over time. My 2018 has the perfect range with all our Australian rapid chargers closer than 200km apart. As our network increases the DC rapid charge at 30 minutes to reach 93% is just perfect. I still have a smile every time I get in.

Amazing review, love the new logo. After your review was tempted to swap it for my ID.3 1st I have on order, however with a list price of €39,955 for the Ioniq in Portugal is a lot considering battery size. I just feel the ID.3 1st at under €39,000 and with a 58 kWh battery will be better. I could be wrong and the ID.3 could drink electrons quicker than I drink beer, but I pray VW have nailed it.

Thanks guys. My favourite online couple. Great review about the practical performance and range and lovely to hear your daughter too. For me there are two things I do not like. I have had my Zoe ZE40 three years now and although it is great it has terrible headlights (and I drive mostly at night plus I don't have 20:20 vision even after cataract ops and lasering). The headlights look really good, a great safety feature. I think for me my next car will need 200 plus miles range (too many trips I do are 60 to 80 miles each way).

Thanks for another enjoyable review. Good to see you highlighting the importance of efficiency in an EV in a world that seems to be producing EVs with bigger and bigger batteries as a means of addressing “range anxiety”. Leaves me thinking how fed up you’ll be as a Mach E owner with a 99kW battery getting 40 off kW from an existing rapid charger! In terms of the road noise, does it come with Nexens like the Kona? There’s been a lot of discussion about this on Kona Electric fora with the simple solution to replaces the tyres with something quieter.

It’s an amazing car and I might replace the Wife’s 30kWh Leaf with it if the Leafs battery stops being good enough for the Mrs with its continuing degradation. I found the noise in the cabin surprisingly low! Definitely very relaxing drive. The slowness of it and the price made me not go for it and buy the Model 3, no regrets there. It’s also work fine for the wife as she doesn’t need to rapid charge. But for me, after watching Bjorns video about it, I wouldn’t want to deal with that

Yes e-208 looks the biz. But, people are getting 140 miles over the last month from 50kWh and the Ioniq Ev is getting about 170 miles from 38kWh at motorway speeds - it is unbelievable. We have had 3 EVs now and 'Flappy Paddles' are a must. The more control you have over regen, the better range you get. On motorways for example, you want non at all, just cruise.

@LeeOades 4 жыл бұрын
@@Marketingparle I've been keeping a close eye on the ranges people have been reporting on the e-208 group on FB too. Having also driven it myself in single digit temperatures at motorway speeds over night, I got about 150 miles which is good enough for me. Two issues for me - charge speed - Bjørn Nyland has done a good job of reporting on that ! and then the torsion beam rear suspension - hows that feel ? Bob Flavin was not happy at all with it !

We were four up regularly and it was well planted. The charging thing, especially here in the UK, shouldn't be a thing. It chews miles up easily and when we did charge we found 43kWs to 80% was over in 35-40 mins.

Bjørn really didn’t do a fair assessment of the charge times in my opinion. If a battery with this range gets to 80% (approx 225 km) in 45 minutes, I would say that compares favorably to my 2017 Ioniq EV which, in three years of real world use, gets 80% (approx 160 km) in 25 minutes at a DC charge station. Two questions: What’s wrong with that? And: Show me a car that charges faster at this price point with all these goodies. I’m jumping out of my old Ioniq EV and into this new one this summer and can’t wait. My only complaint is that, here in the North American market, colour selection is nonexistent (black, white, gray, gray and the same blue I already own) and we apparently don’t get the rear view camera while in forward gear that you have available in Europe.

@@Jamesandkate The lower charging rate compared to the 28kw Model has been overplayed a bit. For most people who home Charge, they'll rarely use a FAST charger, and you typically charge while having Lunch or Coffee at an FCP so you need 40mins anyway. I was watching Tesla Bjorn having Lunch and he had to go and move his Model3 while having lunch as it was charging at 140kw, but there are few Chargers available at that speed, and most people dont do 1,000km challenges, requiring multiple Fast Charger stops in the same day. I drive a bmw i3 94ah Rex myself, having previously owned a Leaf 24kw, and a Zoe Ze40 , and had thought about the Ioniq as my Third EV, but went for the i3 because of its Completely fold Flat Back seats giving me huge Cargo Space allowing me carry my Racing bike without removing the Front Wheel, and for its amazing Power, and the Rex as a Backup. If Ioniq came out in a 64kw model like the Kona, it would be a huge seller. Thanks for the great review.

I thought Bob Flavin's review of the Ionic was unfairly critical. For example, he referred to the BMW 9i3 boot as a "nice big useful space" and the Ionic electric boot as "okay...it's a boot. It's not remarkable, its not clever, it's just a place to put things". The i3 boot is 260 litres and the Ionic is 357 litres.

Content good. I like Kate's voice a lot: its a great voice, and she comes over as a lovely and bright lady with a good plain English accent. (I'm a Northerner, so that is a big plus for me, and I like the way she calls a derriere a bottom!) . The sound quality is a bit lacking on this viddy, though: a bit twangy and cheap sounding, if that makes sense? .

Loving your EV car reviews. My husband is undecided between the Ioniq and the MG5 and I am trying to decide between the Peugeot e-2008 and the Ioniq. We are a family of 5 so boot space and a slightly longer range is essential - which would you recommend?
@Jamesandkate

I'd take the MG5, it has good space. If you can stretch to a facelift it's got loads of extra tech too.

Great car, the only problem being that Hyundai don't make enough of them, and they're still a tad expensive for what you are getting range-wise.
@stefanjepp6612
@stefanjepp6612 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, it is not expensive in Germany at all. You get 8000 Euro off by Hyundai, so that is fair. Range is better than you might expect from the size of the battery. The point is efficiency! So the range is better than the e 208 for example.

Hi James and Kate, great review.... At a £30k++ price point.... Would you recommend a used Tesla or the Hyundai ioniq? I'm torn between a "new" ioniq or used tesla.... Any recommendations??..... I do 16k+++ miles a year if that helps
@itsfahys
@itsfahys 4 жыл бұрын
Recommendations dont count for much really. Everyone will have a different opinion. Try out the Different Models your interested in, see if you can get them for a weekend, and test out the Fast Charging, comfort, Test their real world range, and does the car fit your Drivin requirements, does it drive well on the Type of roads where you Live. A Tesla models is a big car, so might not be great on small roads. Youve the issue with Tesla of expensive Servicing costs, and waiting on parts. James and Kate have a couple of videos about taking their Tesla too the Service Station, but then the Tesla have Access to the Super Charger Network, so if you do a lot of miles daily the Tesla might be more suitable.

If you touch the brake pedal does not mean that you are using the brake pads. You can completely regen with the brake pedal without using the pads if you brake gently. Tesla are different.
