There are two concepts that go together when it comes to messing with old cars: “as long as we’re here we might as well do this because it’ll be a pain to have to do most of this work again later,” and my personal favorite “I want to turn a known unknown into a known known.” While these are the budget-busters, they’re also the concepts that help elevate a project into something that’s fun, safe, reliable, and enjoyable. If you aren’t constantly renegotiating and reassessing your priorities when you’re in there messing around, you aren’t doing it right!

My uncle made almost all of his gaskets and sometimes they would leak. But back in the early 90's some gaskets were hard to find.

Correct on the Part Casting #'s , Jeff.... The first Letter on FORD parts is for the year... a letter C would mean it was made in the '60's,,, a D would be for the '70's, etc... etc... These would be followed by a Number,, which represents the year it was Cast... Thus, a casting number that started....C8, would mean it was made in 1968...D3, would mean 1973.... so on and so on.... I use to remember what all the following numbers and letters were, but.... My old timers has took over,,, SOooo... Might be Best to check the internet sites for what those are designated for...lol But the two of you are correct,,, When replacing a new part... Compare EVERYTHING...Even check the Tapping of anything threaded on the new core,,, Especially on aftermarket stuff.... I've have went to replace parts, only to find out during reassembly that my old bolts/screws do not fit.... The New part has Fine/Coarse threads,,, or now takes a Larger/smaller size bolt/screw... And even worse,,,, Has been changed from SAE to Metric or Visa Versa.... And if your like me,, you'll discover this late at night, or 10 minutes after all the parts stores are closed,, etc, etc....And then, you got to start digging through all your toolbox drawers, bins, cups, jars, boxes, Coffee cans and whatever else you got nut's and bolt's stashed in, to find something that'll work..... OH,, and 'While your there",, you'll come across THE THING that you were digging for THAT LAST TIME,,,, but couldn't find....lol Anyway.....Looking good fellows,,,

On your 1972 Ford that you are working on did it have a metal bracket to hold the rubber brake line in the middle line together if so could you send a photo of it to me

I would like to know the ratio of "planned jobs" vs "might as well's" ? One day I had picked up a new project and promised wife I could live with it "as is" (1967 427 Comet I had owned as young kid) Sitting for a long time decided to rebuild carbs. When she got home from work that afternoon the engine, front and rear suspension was out, front clip off and the body was on a rotisserie! Sure looked nice when done though . . So now I just tear em' all apart from the get go.
